Recently, as I watched my son Nathan play basketball for his school team, I was feeling sorry for myself and for him. His team was facing adversity (困境) on the court and he was playing in a hostile environment — it was the opponent’s home gym filled with their supporters, and Nathan’s team was trailing (落后) for three quarters of the game. As for me, I had just been dismissed (解雇) from my job earlier in that day.
During the drive home, I kept telling myself that I would find work again in a short time — I was always confident in my experience and abilities, but self-doubt was still sticking its foot in the door.
The basketball game entered the fourth quarter with Nathan’s team still trailing. I saw the determination on his face as well as his teammates’ as they fought back to not only tie the game, but then go ahead by three points. Then, a player from the other team made an unbelievable shot to make the game tied again. With the tied scores and seconds on the clock, Nathan found himself with the ball and with skill and confidence, he made the basket with a defender hanging all over him. The other player was called for a foul (犯规).
As Nathan stood preparing for a shot that would put his team up by three points, I saw the focus and determination on his face, with no room for self-doubt. Nathan was able to tune out all the distractions and nail the free throw with such skill, as if he had done it a thousand times.
As I sat there, my heart bursting with pride, it dawned on me that I had taught him perseverance (毅力) in the face of adversity, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That brief moment of self-doubt and feeling sorry for myself was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court. He will play in the finals, but it doesn’t matter if he wins or loses. At this moment, we both won.
4. What did the author estimate his son’s team would be like at first
A. The team would finally win.
B. The team would lose at away court.
C. The team would lose at home court.
D. The team would tie with the opponents.
5. What does the underlined phrase “tune out” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Avoid. B. Focus. C. Create. D. Receive.
6. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. My son would win in the finals and I would find a job soon.
B. I had once taught my son face to face that we should never give up.
C. It was my encouragement and help that made my son win the game.
D. I would become more confident about my future after this experience.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Life Goes Just Like Playing Basketball
B. It Matters Whether to Win or Lose
C. A Lesson in Life and Basketball
D. A Moment of Self-doubt
С
Do you remember that story about the little girl who goes to visit her grandmother and meets a big, bad wolf along the way Or perhaps you remember the story of the three little pigs who build three houses to protect themselves from a wolf
The reality behind the fairy tales is that people feared wolves. Hunting and killing coming from hatred almost caused the animals to die out. Wolves needed a fairy mother — and that is what Brookfield Zoo in Chicago is for wolves and their puppies.
Being a fairy mother to wolves is not easy. Brookfield Zoo replaced iron-barred cubicles (小隔间) with safe habitats, which are not merely attractive to the zoo visitor, but more importantly, are contributing to the normal behavior and reproduction of the animals. The wolves have a large area to run and play in, places to hide and sleep in, and hills to climb with lots of grass and trees around them.
A fairy mother’s job is to make dreams magically come true and part of the magic is being invisible. The people who take care of the wolves hide themselves and the food and toys in places where the wolves can dig them up and find them on their own, so they feel more like they are living in nature.
Fairy tales are just stories. Wolves don' t dress up as grandmothers, nor have they blown a house down. Wolves aren’t scary at all, and in fact, they are more afraid of humans than we are of them.
The wolves have a great life at Brookfield Zoo. Maybe they will stay at Brookfield Zoo, but it would be nice to see them live back in nature again, too. If we all work together, maybe we can make this fairy tale come true for the wolves.
8. What are the two stories used to show
A. Wolves are dangerous to humans.
B. People' s false impression of wolves.
C. The important role of Brookfield Zoo.
D. Wolves are a popular subject of literature.
9. Which word can best describe the area for wolves at Brookfield Zoo
A. Visitor-interactive. B. Mountainous.
C. Remote. D. Natural-looking.
10. What's unique about the people looking after the wolves at Brookfield Zoo
A. They are wolf researchers.
B. They are welcomed by the wolves.
C. They play hide-and-seek with the wolves.
D. They keep themselves out of the wolves sight.
11. What does “this fairy tale” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Living in the wild.
B. Being taken good care of.
C Staying at Brookfield Zoo.
D. Being afraid of humans no more.
D
For many of us, summertime means road trips to the beach or mountains, or at the very least some additional dust on the outside of our vehicle. The extra dirt leads us to do one of two things: wash our car in the driveway or head to the car wash. But which choice is better for the environment
The main concerns with either choice are the amount of fresh water used and the types of chemicals used to get rid of the dirt. Both of these concerns can be closely monitored when washing the car at home, says Katy Gresh, spokeswoman for the Southwest Region of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. She advises car owners to keep a set amount of water in a container for the entire wash. “You don’t want to leave the water running or use more than you need for the job,” she says. But even following this piece of advice comes with an environmental risk: Washing your car in the driveway gets the dirty water into drains (下水道).
“Drains are not made for treating waste.” says John Schombert, executive director of 3 Rivers Wet Weather. Even when car owners use natural soaps to wash their car, Schombert says they are probably ineffective in breaking down grease(油脂)anyway.
The commercial car wash knows full well the rules regarding wastewater in drains. According to the International Carwash Association (ICA), professional car washes must use special water treatment systems. These processes not only keep the dirty water out of drains and regular water treatment systems, but also work to reduce water usage at commercial facilities.
As experts point out, cleaning our car at home can use 100 gallons of pare that to self-service car washes, which allow you to use only about 17 or 18 gallons of water. And most full-service car washes average about 30 to 45 gallons of water per vehicle.
12. What does Katy suggest people do about washing cars
A. Use soft toothbrushes. B. Save treated water.
C. Put aside some water. D. Avoid using chemicals.
13. What is Schombert’s attitude to washing cars at home
A. Disapproving. B. Favorable. C. Indifferent. D. Objective.
14. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. Rules of handling wastewater. B. Advantages of professional car washes.
C. Processes of getting rid of dirty water. D. Drawbacks of water treatment systems.
15. Which mehod of car washing consumes the least water
A. The full-service car washes. B. Car washing in the driveway.
C. The self-service car washes. D. Car washing using natural soaps.

Now another American education icon may be disappearing: the hardbound (精装的) textbook. More and more school districts are replacing traditional textbooks with electronic ones. Electronic textbooks are usually accessed either through an online server or are downloaded to student laptops.
In North Texas, Plano and Irving schools are introducing e-books into a few classrooms, and Lancaster school officials also are considering them. But no local district appears to be going as far as Forney. The district most likely would be the first in the state to use e-books in every classroom for grades five to twelve.
Officials point out several reasons for turning to e-books. For one, they are easier to update. Thus the publishers are able to find ways to do online textbooks and they can go back and change information. Using e-books will better prepare students for college and the workplace.
Rapid district growth is another reason. The number of the students in the district is expected to double within five years. It's difficult to know textbook needs in advance and some students wait months for their books. But e-books can be uploaded onto a“blank” laptop in a few hours.
Cost may eventually be a deciding cause for choosing e-books, but there are no big savings yet. Even if they get it electronically, they still have to pay for the book because they're buying the instructional material. That may change as more and more districts move toward e-books.
Today's students have little trouble adjusting to laptops and e-books, said Connie Cooley, who has taught at the Academy of Irving ISD for five years. But she said it could worry teachers. "It's harder for people who are right around my age and older," said Ms. Cooley, 36. "I'm laptop-savvy, so I was ready for it, but those that aren't area little worrying."

B. The team would lose at away court.
C. The team would lose at home court.
D. The team would tie with the opponents.

A. Avoid. B. Focus. C. Create. D. Receive.
6. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. My son would win in the finals and I would find a job soon.
B. I had once taught my son face to face that we should never give up.
C. It was my encouragement and help that made my son win the game.
D. I would become more confident about my future after this experience.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Life Goes Just Like Playing Basketball
B. It Matters Whether to Win or Lose
C. A Lesson in Life and Basketball
D. A Moment of Self-doubt
B 5. A 6. D 7. C
根据文章第一段中的“Recently, as I watched my son Nathan play basketball for his school team, I was feeling sorry for myself and for him. His team was facing adversity (困境) on the court and he was playing in a hostile environment — it was the opponent’s home gym filled with their supporters, and Nathan’s team was trailing (落后) for three quarters of the game.
故选A。
根据文章最后一段“That brief moment of self- doubt and feeling sorry for myself was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court.(我儿子在篮球场上的行为使我短暂的自我怀疑和为自己感到难过的那一刻烟消云散)”可以看出,儿子比赛过程中面对困境依然坚持不懈的态度和行为,使得作者也不再自怨自、怀疑自我,对于未来更加充满自信。
C“A Lesson in Life and Basketball”中的life与作者的生活状况呼应,其中的basketball与作者的孩子的比赛呼应,lesson与作者的体会呼应。故选C。

C. Staying at Brookfield Zoo.
D. Being afraid of humans no more.
B 9. D 10. D 11. A

根据第二段“The reality behind the fairy tales is that people feared wolves.(童话故事背后的现实是人们害怕狼)”和第五段“Fairy tales are just stories. Wolves don' t dress up as grandmothers, nor have they blown a house down. Wolves aren’t scary at all, and in fact, they are more afraid of humans than we are of them.(童话只是故事。狼不会装扮成老奶奶,也不会把房子吹倒。狼一点都不可怕,事实上,它们比我们更害怕人类)”可推知,第一段讲《小红帽》和《三只小猪》的故事是为了引出关于狼的话题,进而告诉我们人们对于狼的认识是错误的。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The wolves have a large area to run and play in, places to hide and sleep in, and hills to climb with lots of grass and trees around them.(狼有很大的区域可以奔跑和玩耍,有地方可以躲藏和睡觉,还有可以爬的小山,周围有很多草和树)”可知,Brookfield动物园在 尽量为狼营造自然的生活环境,所以D项natural-looking最适合描述Brookfield动物园的狼区。
根据第四段“The people who take care of the wolves hide themselves and the food and toys in places where the wolves can dig them up and find them on their own, so they feel more like they are living in nature.(照顾狼的人会把自己藏起来、并把食物和玩具藏在狼可以自己挖出来找到的地方,这样狼就会觉得自己更像是生活在大自然中) ”可知,在Brookfield动物园照顾狼的人会藏起来,不让狼发现他们。
根据第六段“Maybe they will stay at Brookfield Zoo, but it would be nice to see them live back in nature again, too.(也许它们会留在Brookfield动物园,但看到它们重新回到大自然中也很好)”可知,作者认为,尽管Brookfield动物园很好,但也愿意看到狼群重回大自然,所以下文“If we all work together, maybe we can make this fairy tale come true for the wolves.(如果我们齐心协力,也许我们能让狼群的this fairy tale成真)”中说通过努力,让“this fairy tale(这个童话故事)”成真,指的就是上文的上狼群重回大自然这一愿望。故选A项。

As experts point out cleaning our car at home can use 100 gallons of pare that to self-service car washes, which allow you to use only about 17 or 18 gallons of water. And most full-service car washes average about 30 to 45 gallons of water per vehicle.
12. What does Katy suggest people do about washing cars
A. Use soft toothbrushes. B. Save treated water.
C. Put aside some water. D. Avoid using chemicals.
13. What is Schombert’s attitude to washing cars at home
A. Disapproving. B. Favorable. C. Indifferent. D. Objective.
14. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. Rules of handling wastewater. B. Advantages of professional car washes.
C. Processes of getting rid of dirty water. D. Drawbacks of water treatment systems.
15. Which mehod of car washing consumes the least water
A. The full-service car washes. B. Car washing in the driveway.
C. The self-service car washes. D. Car washing using natural soaps.

根据第四段“These processes not only keep the dirty water out of drains and regular water treatment systems, but also work to reduce water usage at commercial facilities.”( 这些过程不仅可以防止污水进入下水道和常规的水处理系统,而且还可以减少商业设施的用水量。)
根据最后一段“As experts point out, cleaning our car at home can use 100 gallons of pare that to self-service car washes, which allow you to use only about 17 or 18 gallons of water. Tips to create time richness
If you feel that your sense of time has changed recently, you are not alone. A survey from Glassdoor found that 79 percent of U.S. employees said they would prefer more time-related benefits over a pay rise. _____16_____ We can never get it back. Here are four tips to create time richness.
● Track your time
In any review of your financial (金融的) life, Job One is figuring out exactly where your cash is going. _____17_____ Write down how you are spending your days, down to the minute, and then take a hard look at the results. Probably, far too much time is being spent on unproductive periods like looking through anxiety-producing news.
● ___18___
You can fund more free time for yourself. For instance, you can pay others to clean your house. It will cost you money, but if you can afford it, the effect on your life happiness will be wildly immeasurable.
● Reshape your workday
If your day is filled with time-consuming meetings, perhaps there are some you could skip. If your office reopens, perhaps you could ask for working from home a couple of days a week. Multiply those time savings over the course of a year. ___19___
● Entertainment time matters
The point of producing more time for yourself is not that you can spend it all playing games on your smart phone or staring at a TV screen. _____20_____ It is fine in moderation (适度) -but aim for more “active” entertainment that is proven to produce real happiness, like having meals with friends, volunteering, or exercising.
A. Buy more time
B. Measure your free time
C. The same holds true for time.
D. Time is our most valuable resource.
E. How to spend your time counts a lot.
F. That is typically “passive” entertainment
G. You create vast amounts of space in your calendar.
D 17. C 18. A 19. G 20. F
D. Time is our most valuable resource.
根据上文“In any review of your financial (金融的) life, Job One is figuring out exactly where your cash is going. (在回顾你的财务生活时,第一件事就是弄清楚你的钱都花到哪里去了。)”和下文“Write down how you are spending your days, down to the minute, and then take a hard look at the results. (写下你每天是如何度过的,精确到每分钟,然后仔细看看结果。)”可知,对待时间,你也应该弄清楚你的时间都花到哪里去了,选项 C. The same holds true for time.
根据本段“You can fund more free time for yourself. For instance, you can pay others to clean your house. ( 你可以为自己争取更多的自由时间。例如,你可以付钱给别人来打扫你的房子。)”可知,你可以通过让别人为你服务并支付其报酬来换回属于你的自由时间,该句中“pay others to …”与选项A中“buy time”相呼应,所以选项A. Buy more time(换取更多时间)符合语境,故选A。
根据本段副标题Reshape your workday(重新规划你的工作日)和上文“Multiply those time savings over the course of a year.( 把这些节省下来的时间翻倍。)” G. You create vast amounts of space in your calendar.
根据本段副标题Entertainment time matters(娱乐时间很重要)和上文“The point of producing more time for yourself is not that you can spend it all playing games on your smart phone or staring at a TV screen.( 为自己创造更多时间的意义并不在于你可以把所有时间都花在玩智能手机游戏或盯着电视屏幕上。)” F. That is typically “passive” entertainment.( 这是典型的被动娱乐)符合语境,故选F。

Now another American education icon may be disappearing: the hardbound (精装的) textbook. More and more school districts are replacing traditional textbooks with electronic ones. Electronic textbooks are usually accessed either through an online server or are downloaded to student laptops.
In North Texas Plano and Irving schools are introducing e-books into a few classrooms, and Lancaster school officials also are considering them.
More and more schools in America choose e-textbooks. That's because it's easy to update e-textbooks. Besides, with rapid district growth, it's difficult to know the exact number of students, some of whom have to wait months before textbooks arrive. Finally, adjusting to e-books may help to reduce cost. However, it worries some old teachers.

48. The music took me through the twists and turns of a classic story about a young couple ________ by their families.(根据句意填空)
49. Finally, during the most exciting part, the music takes a softer turn and ends on a bittersweet note, telling us how the couple________ into butterflies and fly away to be together forever.(根据句意填空)
