Apart from speeches, in my point of view, we can use our eyes to express ourselves. And through one’s eyes, we can read sorrow, happiness, encouragement, and many other emotions. Eyes are always the most direct organs to reveal our thoughts.
Until now I still remember an experience, which happened when I took part in a singing contest at the age of nine. It was the power of my mother’s eyes that encouraged me to go for it. I had shown great interest in singing before that, but I was too shy to sing in public. So one day my mother took me to sign up for the singing contest. With my mother’s company and encouragement, I was determined to meet that challenge. Standing on the stage, I suddenly found I had become the focus of all attention. I got so nervous that I couldn’t even keep my eyes open. When it was my turn to be introduced to the audience and sing, I became even more nervous. I felt my legs were shaking and my memory seemed to have left me—I couldn’t remember anything. Searching for help, I met my mother’s eyes which were sparkling with encouragement and strong power. It seemed that they were speaking to me, “Take it easy. You can do it! I’ll always be with you!” I read the message in her eyes and at that moment I got my confidence back and began to sing my song. When I came down from the stage, she came up to me, saying, “Great! I’m proud of you!” and gave me a big hug. At that moment. I saw her eyes filled with tears of joy. Sometimes, you see, just a look of encouragement from a loved one can make a shy person brave.
24. What’s the author’s purpose of telling us about her unforgettable experience
A. To tell us how she became brave.
B. To share her unforgettable experience with us.
C. To prove that we can express ourselves through our eyes.
D. To explain that our eyes are an important part of our body.
25. According to the passage we know that___.
A. the author didn’t do well in the singing contest
B. the author got confidence from her mother’s eyes
A. the author wasn’t interested in the singing contest at all
B. the author was nervous because she couldn’t see her mother
26. Which of the phrases can replace the underlined word “reveal” in the first paragraph
A. Take out. B. Hold up. C. Callfor. D. Give away.
27. What does the author focus on in the passage
A. How to Express Ourselves B. A Singing Contest
C. Encouraging Eyes D. Confidence and Success

In the nearly two centuries since German physician Carl Wunderlich established 98.6℉ as the standard “normal” body temperature, it has been used by parents and doctors alike as the measure by which fevers and often the severity of illness have been assessed.
In more recent years, however, lower body temperatures have been widely reported in healthy adults. A 2019study showed that the normal body temperature in Americans is about 97.5℉. A multinational team led by Michael Gurven and Thomas Kraft have found a similar decrease among the Tsimane, a native population in the Bolivian Amazon.
A key question, then, is why body temperatures have declined over time both for Americans and Tsimane. Extensive data available from the team’s long-term research in Bolivia addresses some possibilities.
Declines might be due to the rise of modern healthcare and lower rates of lingering mild infections now as compared to the past. But while health has generally improved over the past two decades, infections are still widespread in rural Bolivia. Therefore the results suggest that reduced infection alone can’t explain the observed body temperature declines.
It could be that people are in better condition, so their bodies might be working less to fight infection. Or greater access to antibiotics(抗生素) and other treatments means the duration of infection is shorter now than in the past.
Another possibility is that our bodies don’t have to work as hard to regulate(调节) internal temperature because of air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter. While Tsimane body temperatures do change with time of year and weather patterns, the Tsimane still do not use any advanced technology for helping to regulate their body temperature. They do, however, have more access to clothes and blankets.
The researchers were initially surprised to find no single “magic bullet” that could explain the decline in body temperature. It’s likely a combination of factors—all pointing to improved conditions.
28. What role has 98.6℉ been playing
A. It can arouse people’s attention to health.
B. It can indicate an abnormal body temperature.
C. It can show an illness is incurable.
D. It can help doctors determine a fever.
29. Why rural Bolivia is mentioned in the text
A. To imply other existing factors.
B. To arouse readers’ sympathy.
C. To call for improved medical access.
D. To discuss methods to reduce infections.
30. What contributes to the decline in body temperature
A. The growing adaptability.
B. The international policies.
C The improved conditions.
D. The worsening environment.
31. What can we learn from the passage
A. Modern life improves the general health.
B. The normal body temperature is declining.
C. Living conditions greatly affect mankind.
D. Various factors influence the body temperature.

Like the rest of us, scientists have long suspected the healing capacity (修复能力) of a good hug. Unlike the rest of us, they’ve gone about trying to prove it.
“Laboratory studies suggest that things like hugs help us feel safer. They can also make us less sensitive to physical pain and less reactive when we’re faced with threatening experiences,” says Michael Murphy. He is a research professor in the department of psychological sciences at Texas Tech University. “This lab work has shown that hugs and other touch behavior are related to stress. The more stress we have, the more our heart rates and blood pressure go up. At this time, hugs and other forms of personal touch may give off all sorts of feel-good chemicals, so that stress can be reduced.”
“There’s a lot that we still need to learn, and there’s a lot we don’t know,” Murphy says. “However, what seems to be rising up is that hugs, as well as other forms of loving and gentle touch, are really powerful. They remind people that they’ re cared about and that they have someone in their corner.”
We expect touch. When we were born, we were placed in our mothers’ arms almost immediately. In that first year of our life, we spend a lot of time being held by other people. And as we grow up, we seek out hugs and touch as a way of connection. I think what we have lost in the past few years are these really easy opportunities to be reminded of connection.”
While he was at Carnegie Mellon, Murphy was the lead author of a hug-centered 2018 article in the scientific journal PLOS One. In a series of interviews with 404 adults over a two-week period, the researchers found that receiving a hug is associated with the attenuation of negative emotions that occur on days with interpersonal conflicts. That is to say, generally, hugs help to reduce the negative impacts that personal conflicts may cause in our daily lives.
32. What can we infer about hugs from the laboratory studies
A. They make us feel calm and at ease.
B. They can cure us of our mental disease.
C. They can put much pressure on people.
D. They show people’s good social relationships.
33. Why do people seek out hugs and touch as they grow up
A. To recall childhood memories.
B. To solve relationship problems.
C. To keep connected with others.
D. To express their social politeness.
34. What does the underlined word “attenuation” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Expression. B. Reduction.
C Suffering. D. Influence.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Power of Hugs
B. How to Reduce Stress
C. How to Care for Others
D. The Importance of Interpersonal Relations

How To Make Your Wardrobe (衣柜)Eco-Friendly
Maybe you’ve started to buy recyclable products and carry reusable grocery bags. 36 .Even when you’re doing all these, there may be something you’re completely ignoring — your wardrobe. You don’t necessarily have to replace your entire wardrobe with items from eco-friendly labels. Instead, you could make a few adjustments here and there to fill your closet with eco-friendly lifestyle. Take a look at the tips below:
37. Research shows that 60 to 80 percent of clothes’ environmental impact comes from how often it is washed. You can wear your clothes two to three times before washing them. Then use cold water to save energy.
Be a big picture shopper. Before you buy something, consider: Will I still want to wear this a year from now 38.
Choose clothes with right materials. When you’re buying new clothes, make sure you go for materials that have a low impact on the environment. 39. Even when you’ re buying other clothes, try to look for recycled ones.
Cut down on waste by exchanging clothes with friends. You could also donate your old clothes to local clothing recycling bins. If you have clothes that you love but have gone out of style, try to create something new out of them. 40 . Otherwise, you could also create DIY clothes out of them.
As you can see, there are plenty of options for you to adopt an eco-friendly wardrobe. A minor improvement could work wonders, so try not to throw away anything. The goal is to reduce waste, not create more.
A. For instance, you could turn loose jeans into skinny jeans.
B. Go for bamboo, silk, wool and organic cotton.
C. You will have no trouble finding the right clothes.
D. Wash your clothes less often.
E. If not, leave it for someone who will.
F. Buy high-quality clothes that will last one year.

My parents bought some souvenirs in the local market. Meanwhile, I collected some postcard and funny toys. Dear Adam,
Knowing that you take a great interest in Chinese culture, I’m writing to invite you to attend Chinese Poetry Contest to be held by the city TV station at 6:30 pm next Friday at the Citizen Center.
Similar contests are watched by many people in China as ancient Chinese culture is regaining popularity these days. Also, the wisdom delivered through Chinese classic poems can be rather impressive and helpful for the learners of the Chinese language.
It will be a rather unforgettable night and I sincerely hope you could come with me. Looking forward to your early reply!
