Ever since she received a little toy airliner as a birthday gift, Kate Koralevskaya has been attracted by flight. From flying remote-controlled airplanes to building her own model ones, Kate has always considered flying a plane one of her passions, but only until recently has she been able to take that to new heights.
When Kate heard about the Upwind Scholarship from her school counselor, she knew it was in extraordinary opportunity to realize her dream. The program’s mission is to provide all the training necessary to obtain a private pilot’s license (PPL) for students in between their junior and senior year of high school free of charge.
After completing a lengthy application and her subsequent acceptance into the program, Kate began her training last spring. Normally, recipients of the scholarship would attend ground school in person where they learn the fundamentals of flying. Due to the pandemic (大流行病), however, Kate spent hours each weekend studying online lessons in her room whenever she got a break from homework. Once summer came around, Kate and three peers put in two straight weeks of ground school, reviewing fight training from nine to five every day. “It was the toughest part of the program,” Kate said.
After completing that portion of ground school, Kate was finally able to begin flying at the San Carlos Airport with the other scholarship recipients from around the Bay Area. Flying especially for first-timers like Kate, is a hands-on process involving lots of checklists to make sure the important tasks are being taken care of.
Now, having finished the program and earned her PPL, Kate plans on training as a fight instructor and hopes to become an airline pilot in her future.
She credits the Upwind Scholarship for all she’s been able to accomplish so far and hopes that anyone who shares her passion will look into it. “It is a very hard scholarship to get into, and you have to be truly interested in flight,” Kate said. “It can’t be something like ‘Oh, why don’t I try flying this summer ’ You have to be ready to do a lot of work and put in effort in order to succeed in the program.”
24. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. Her skill of building model airplanes.
B. Her childhood dream of becoming a pilot.
C. Her wish to take fights around the world.
D. Her desire to fly remoter-controlled airplanes.
25. What is the goal of the Upwind Scholarship
A. To help students in need to achieve their dreams.
B. To provide necessary training for private pilots for free.
C. To give students expert advice on earning a scholarship.
D. To prepare high school students to become a private pilot.
26. What did Kate do in ground school
A. She took online lessons on flying. B. She finished applying for the program.
C. She went over the fundamentals of flying. D. She did some research into the pandemic.
27. Which of the following best describes Kate
A. Confident and aggressive. B. Ambitious and hard-working.

Many people feel that dream is unique to humans. However, many dog owners will likely disagree on that. They have noticed that their dogs at various times during the sleep may shake legs, snort (哼) and sometimes growl (低声吼叫) which gives the impression that they are dreaming. These things may wonder us about whether dogs dream.
Scientists confirm that dogs probably do dream. It turns out that dog brains and human brains have many similarities during sleep cycles. Researchers used special machines to measure electrical activity in a dog’s brain and human’s brain. Scientists already knew that when humans dream, a certain part of the brain is active during sleep. Researchers discovered that the same part of the brain is active in sleeping dogs. Scientists have other data that back up these findings.
Many people dream that they are trying to move but cannot. Interestingly, part of that experience is not a dream. When people sleep, the brain produces a chemical that causes the dreamer to become temporarily paralyzed (使麻痹). Researchers think this happens so that people cannot physically act out dreams while they are sleeping. Dog brains make the same chemical. In one study during which this chemical was blocked, sleeping test dogs performed physical activities, such as standing up, sniffing around the room for imaginary rabbits, or chasing imaginary balls.
Because of these similarities, researchers believe that the content of a dog’s dream might come from the same source as a human’s dream. “People’s dreams are usually based on things they did that day,” says Dr. Samantha Hudspith. “So there is reason to believe that dogs dream about the things they’ve done that day. Of course, there will never be a way to prove this. Dogs cannot describe their dreams the way that humans can.”
28. What does the underlined phrase “back up” mean in the second paragraph
A. Support. B. Disagree. C. Record. D. Show.
29. What happened to a sleeping dog when this chemical mentioned in paragraph 3 was cut off
A. It woke up. B. It acted out its dream.
C. It stopped dreaming. D. It couldn’t move its body.
30. How is the text mainly developed
A. By telling stories B. By giving examples.
C. By comparing details D. By listing differences.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Do Dogs Dream B. Why Do Dogs Dream
C. Signs of Dog Dreams D. Similarities Between Humans and Dogs
D
In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend I look for certain qualities (品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on (信赖) a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience (经验) and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor (幽默), too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!
32. Which of the following qualities the writer thinks is the most important in choosing a friend?
A. honesty. B. understanding. C. reliability. D. a sense of humor.
33. If you have fair weather friends, .
A. you will become rich
B. you can be sure that you get real friends
C. you will be refused when you get into trouble
D. they will give you all that they have when you need help
34. Good friends need to .
A. have money or luck B. be helped with money
C. understand each other’s feelings D. always point out each other’s mistakes
35. This passage mainly discuss .
A. the qualities of a friend B. where to choose friends
C. how to get along with friends D. the importance of having a friend.

At the end of a long day, it’s all too easy to take a hot shower, brush your teeth, and then jump into bed. 36 As it turns out, going to bed with wet hair isn’t as harmless as you probably thought.
The first negative result of sleeping with wet hair is purely cosmetic (美容). 37 . If you try to style your hair in the morning after sleeping on it wet, you’re probably going to have trouble styling the resulting curliness (卷曲), funny waves, and flat sides.
When you wake up, you’re probably going to have to re-wet it again to properly dry it and regain control. 38 .
Sleeping with wet hair does not immediately damage your hair, but it can certainly lead to hair breakage, because hair is weakest when wet.
39 First, you can swap your cotton pillowcases for silk ones. Silk has a much smoother surface, so you won’t experience as much unfortunate breakage.
Next, you can make sure to sleep with your hair down, instead of up in a tight ponytail. In addition, you should replace your tight bands with a soft one that isn’t going to roughly pull at night.
40 Dry oils and texturizing mousses (摩丝) are some of the best ways to ensure you don’t wake up looking like a lion while protecting your precious hair from damage. Now that you know how bad sleeping with wet hair is, make sure you’re not making these hairstyle mistakes.
A. Finally, never skip out on applying product.
B. Here are some tips that can help dry any hair faster.
C. This unnecessarily adds time to your morning routine.
D. If you haven’t noticed, the ends of your hair tend to dry first.
E. But have you ever thought about the risks of sleeping with wet hair
F. You can’t predict how your wet hair is going to look in the morning.
G. If you must sleep with wet hair, there are a few ways to reduce the damage.

With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom! ”she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落)somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. Dear Jim,
I’m delighted that you will come to China as an exchange student next term. Knowing that you hope to adapt to the new life here as fast as possible, I would like to give you some advice.
Firstly, it’s necessary to pay full attention to what teachers say and take down the notes during the classes. Secondly, as a foreign student, you may find it a bit difficult to understand some notes or thinking patter about study, so that you are supposed to ask your teachers and classmates for help after class. What’s more, make friends with them, which will make you more easily get used to the life here. Finally, different kinds of clubs are offered to choose, such as music club, ping-pong club, AI club, you can join what you like best.
I hope my suggestion can work well with you and I am looking forward to see you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Jane had to stay alone in the forest for another cold night. Although she felt a little sad, she didn’t get fearful. She thought about Tom. “He must have called for those helicopters. Maybe he was in one of them and will come back again! I have to guide him tomorrow.” She fell asleep and dreamed of seeing Tom.
Paragraph 2:
It was day break when Jane woke up. She ate some berries and then walked along the stream, hoping to find a suitable place to guide the helicopter. Fortunately, she saw a huge flat rock in an open area at a distance. She rushed to the rock, climbed onto it and waited. To her great joy, the helicopter appeared again. The nearer it got, the more she flagged the yellow blouse. Luckily, the helicopter didn’t miss Jane this time and it landed near the big rock slowly. Tom jumped off the helicopter and ran towards Jane. She broke down and burst into tears.

We will leave Folkestone in five minutes, and the journey to Boulogne will take about two hours. The sun and temperatures of 30℃ are expected on the French coast, so we should have a calm journey. For your convenience, we’d like to point out some places on board. There’s a snack bar serving sandwiches and desserts in the front of the first floor. There is also a restaurant serving hot meals on the second floor. If you need to change money, we have a bank on the third floor, between the ship’s office and the duty-free shop. Toilets are on the first floor next to the snack bar and on the second floor at the end of the hallway. For the children, there’s a game room on the third floor. Here, children can find a lot of great video games to play. Finally, ladies and gentlemen, we’d like to wish you a pleasant journey, and we hope that you’ll travel with us again in the near future.
