Everyone has heard the phrase, ''giving up is not an option”. Many disregard it and do not believe in it. But this small yet effective phrase gives a strong message. There will always be something that interrupts or causes inconvenience in the journey to achieve the dreams. But that should not drive one away from the path that they are on. Fitting the context perfectly is the story of Ian William.
Popularly known as the “Social Golfer", Ian William is an accountant, lecturer, author, and a former golf player. He dreamed of playing golf at childhood. He would often observe players playing from a distance. He worked hard and changed his financial limitations. Then he began practicing in various golf matches. Due to his devotion and love for the sport, he picked up the techniques quickly and soon began playing as a professional. He also dreamed of participating in the Senior Golf Tour in the coining year.
However, in 1996, Ian was diagnosed with a tumor (肿瘤)in the left part of his brain, which affected his hearing from the right side and damaged his balance nerve. He underwent two surgeries in 1997 with a smile and a hope to be cured. Although the surgeries were successful, Ian caught meningitis (脑股炎)while recovering from it. Apart from being hopeful and optimistic, there was no other way Ian could cope with the situation,
Just as things had begun to normalize, in 2006, Ian's body was affected by a major stroke (中风), This stroke numbed the left side of his body. His life-long dream of participating in a golf tournament could not be fulfilled anymore.
Ian took his time to recover and came back even stronger. He wanted to inspire millions with his journey and decided to share his experiences through a book. Ian has now published his 3rd book Still Crazy After All These Years in 2020.

A teenager of 17 walks into a corner store and grabs a Coca-Cola, but the cashier refuses to sell it to him because he is underage. That rule is expected to soon become reality in parts of Mexico, as lawmakers in several states push legislation(立法) to keep junk food away from children. “I know it can sound a bit difficult but we have to take action now,” says Lopez, a lawmaker in Oaxaca’s Congress.
More than 70, 000 Mexicans have died from COVID-19, the world’s fourth-highest recorded death toll, tracked by Johns Hopkins University. 89% of those who died in Mexico had an underlying(内在的) medical condition such as obesity, diabetes( 糖尿病), high blood pressure and heart problems. That has led to a new urgency to change diets so that the younger generation doesn’t suffer those illnesses.
The critics, however, say the leaders are using preexisting health conditions in COVID-19 patients to distract from a weak government response to the virus outbreak. Yet few people would deny that the country consumes large amounts of sugar-sweetened drinks and processed snacks with little nutrition — or that Mexico has a major weight problem.
Oaxaca’s governor approved the state’s junk food prohibition( 禁止) last week. Legislators still have to complete the legal systems, and punishment could include fines and even jail. Lopez says legislators from all over the country have called her for advice. Many other states are debating a junk food ban. However, a nationwide law would not be easy. “There are powerful commercial interests that least want it to happen, but we must prioritize(优先考虑) the well-being of our children,” Lopez says.
28.What is Lopez’s attitude towards the junk food
A.Positive. B. Neutral. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.
29.What does the underlined word “distract” mean in paragraph 3
A.Shift attention. B. Avoid illnesses. C. Break away. D. Keep distance.
30.Which of the following statements is true
A.Selling children junk food has been banned nationwide in Mexico.
B.The younger generation doesn’t suffer any weight problems.
C.Most Mexicans who died of COVID-19 had other health problems.
D.People who break the prohibition in Oaxaca will only be warned.
31.According to the last paragraph, who are most likely to oppose the legislation
A.Teenagers. B. Soft drink companies. C. Legislators. D. State governors.
D
Trees can benefit the environment in a vast number of ways. Not only do they turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, thus providing the basis of the environment which sustains all life on Earth, but they can also clear the air of pollutants and dangerous substances. Due to this, they are often used by urban planners to reduce air and noise pollution, as well as beautify areas. However, when it comes to their role as pollution-fighters in cities, trees also have some downsides. Firstly, they take a long time to grow and secondly, dense (密集的)urban areas are also not ideal for planting large numbers of trees, and it is often these areas that are most in need of pollution reduction.
That's why a Mexican startup, BiomiTech, has created an artificial tree called "BioUrban" that can do the work of an entire small forest. The tree, which uses a special microalgae (微藻)developed by BiomiTech to carry out the processes of natural trees, could be one way of improving air quality in areas lacking in green spaces.
Measuring 4.2 meters tall and nearly 3 meters wide, the BioUrban looks something like a cross between a tree and a post-modernist high-rise, with a steel trunk that radiates rising bands of concentric metal. After polluted air has entered the BioUrban, the algae gets to work, using natural processes to turn the pollutants into clean oxygen. The company claims that a single BioUrban could do the work of around 368 real trees —pumping out 2,890 clean breathfuls of air a day.
Mexico is certainly no stranger to air pollution. On average, Mexico City often has a suspended air pollutant density twice the World Health Organization's maximum recommended amount. It is not uncommon in Mexico City for schools to be closed, and people urged to stay indoors, due to the levels of pollution in the city.
The vast majority of this pollution comes from the city's estimated 3 million cars. The dense urban nature of the city also means it is often difficult to create meaningfully sized parks in certain areas. It is BiomiTech's goal to provide viable(切实可行的)solutions for these locations, and to reduce air pollution in certain targeted areas, such as around schools, hospitals and homes for the elderly, as well as places frequented by pedestrians.
Currently, BiomiTech has installed three BioUrban trees across Central and South America One has been“planted"” in Puebla, Mexico -- the home of BiomiTech, while the others have been sent to Colombia and Peru. Turkey has recently put in an order for two BioUrbans, while Mexico City and Monterrey in northern Mexico are also eyeing up the project.
Despite the claims of efficiency of the BioUrban, Jaime Ferrier, a founding partner in BiomiTech, is also eager to insist BiomiTech isn't out to supersede trees in urban areas, only to provide solutions for areas
where planting trees is not viable.
32. What does the author mainly want to show in Paragraph 1
A. Growing trees isn't that helpful today. B. Dense urban areas lack trees for a reason.
C. Trees are really beneficial to the environment. D.Using trees to fight pollution in cities has limitations
33. What can we learn about the BioUrban
A. It looks exactly like a real tree. B. It can handle air pollutants efficiently.
C.It can root out the urban air pollution. D. It can't produce much oxygen at present.
34. Why is Mexico City mentioned in the passage
A. To tell us about the harm of air pollution. B. To show such cities really need the BioUrban.
C.To draw attention to the city's pollution problem D. To explain why BiomiTech invented the BioUrban.
35. What does the underlined word “supersede" in the last paragraph mean
A. Involve. B.Reduce. C. Replace. D.Violate.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Don't judge a book by its cover. We have heard that advice over and over again. And it makes sense. Why should we judge someone who is overweight simply by how they look It has nothing to do with them as a person, and it says nothing about all they have achieved in life.
36 We should not judge them as healthy simply because they are thin.We care so much about weight that we think those who succeed in keeping a"healthy weight"must be healthy.
Many studies have shown that being overweight increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and even death. 37 Some studies just look at pounds. Some use body mass index(BMI) which includes both height and weight measurements. But neither one says anything about overall health for sure.
In some studies,a person's fitness has been shown to be more important than overall weight. That means those at"normal"weight, but below average fitness could be at higher risk than fitter and heavier people. 38
If you are thin and want to know if your health may be at risk, whole body MRIs(磁共振成像)can tell you if you are a TOFI(thin on the outside, fat on the inside). This is thought to increase your health risk even if you have a perfect body weight. 39 Rather, creating and keeping healthy lifestyle habits should be the goal.
Start now and you will be on your way to improving your overall health. 40 But even if it doesn't,rest assured you are still improving your health and your life.
A. The same holds true for thin people.
B. Weight loss will usually naturally follow.
C. The article mainly talks about people in Australia.
D. So weight loss should not be what we always dream of.
E. How many times do you say,"She looks great!Nice and thin!"
F. But the problem lies with how we can know we are overweight.
G. So there is no such thing as healthy weight, only healthy lifestyles.

There was a rich couple who was throwing a big New Year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn’t mind paying for it. After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make even one time’s meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn’t deliver their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.”
They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart! The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief This is our goods and he was supposed to deliver them. It seems you poor thieves are stealing our goods and going to sell them.”

第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
When the porter heard the angry wife asking, he turned back. The porter replied, “Madam, please calm down. I’m not a thief. That poor old man was sick since last month. He couldn’t earn enough to even have a single meal of the day. Therefore, he fell down and handed me $15, saying, ‘I have taken an advance for this delivery, and you deliver the goods to the couple’s home.’ Madam, he was poor and hungry, but he was an honest man. I was just on the way to completing the old man’s last delivery to your home.”
Paragraph 2:
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes, and the wife felt so ashamed that she had no courage to look her husband in the eyes. Suddenly she rushed to the market. Half an hour later, the wife came back with some food in her hand. She passed the food on to the porter, and said sorry to the porter, saying that she shouldn’t suspect them, and took them as thieves. At last, the porter took the goods to their house, and the rich couple changed their attitude to the man like the porter. Respect everyone regardless of their financial and social status. It’s always a good deed to give something to the one who deserves.

Could I, a young mother with a newborn baby, drive from my home outside Boston to meet him on Wednesday It was a rare chance. So I said yes. Honestly, it was tough. My son hated being in the car seat and ate very frequently during the long ride. When we arrived in New York, I handed my son over to my friend from college. A dad himself, he looked after my son in a coffee shop during my meeting. Everything went fine thanks to his help.
When my son was four months old, my best friend was going through a difficult time. So I decided to fly to Florida to comfort her. But I figured it couldn’t be worse than driving to New York. Amazingly, people I met on our trip were endlessly helpful. The airline worker got me an extra seat. Taxi drivers helped me fasten his car seat. If you want an opportunity to see the good in people, try taking a baby on a trip. In my experience, when face to face, most people sincerely want to take care of each other.
