But the journalist Ian Leslie, in his newly-published book Curious: The Desire to Know and Why Your Future Depends on It, insists that curiosity is a much overlooked(被忽视的) human virtue, crucial(重要的) to our success, and we are losing it. Leslie presents considerable evidence for the claim that the society as a whole is growing less curious. In the U.S. and Europe, for example, the rise of the Internet, among other social and technological changes, has led to a declining consumption(消耗) of news from outside the reader’s borders. Indeed, Google, for which Leslie expresses admiration, is also his frequent whipping boy (替罪羊): we seek only the information we want. But not everything is to be blamed on technology. The decline in interest in literary fiction is also one of the causes identified by Leslie. Why is this a problem Because without curiosity we will lose the spirit of innovation(创新精神) and entrepreneurship (企业家精神). Worse still, that lack of curiosity produces a relative lack of knowledge, and the lack of knowledge is difficult if not impossible to compensate(弥补) for later on. Fortunately, some strategies(策略) can be employed to develop curiosity: If you just accept the world as it is without trying to dig deeper, you will certainly lose the ‘holy(神圣的) curiosity’. Of course, one effective(有效的) way to dig deeper beneath the surface is asking questions: What is that Why is it made that way Who invented it How does it work ...And if you see learning as a burden, there’s no way you will want to dig deeper into anything. That will just make the burden(负担) heavier. But if you think of learning as something fun, you will naturally want to dig deeper. __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ 【2019高一金陵中学期中】 A Here is a list of some of the best museums for children in America.

Researchers B Can dogs and cats get along well in the same home People who are thinking about getting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found that if the cat is taken back home before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. In two-thirds of the homes cats and dogs have a good relationship. However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression(侵略,好斗) and fighting were found in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body languages are just different. For example, when a cat turns its head away it means aggression, while a dog doing the same means submission(顺从). In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers found a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “Dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “Cat”. What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to become smarter. They can learn to read each other’s body languages, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was expected. Once familiar with each other’s body language, cats and dogs can play together, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets-to people who don’t get along well, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even countries. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance. 54. Some cats and dogs may fight when______.

C Boys do worse in English when there are girls in their class, researchers will say today, contradicting the widely held belief that girls are always having a good influence on boys in school. Boys do best with “as few girls as possible” in English lessons at primary and secondary school, Steven Proud from Bristol University has found. But when it comes to maths and science, both boys and girls at primary school achieve up to a tenth of a grade more when there is a high proportion of girls in the class, Proud found. Proud tracked boys’ and girls’ test results at the ages of 7,11,14 and 16 in 16,000 schools in England between 2002 and 2004 for his Ph.D. He analysed the test scores to see whether the proportion of girls in a year group made a difference to the results of both genders in math, science and English. Proud looked at the schools that were in their high or low proportion of girls. Boys consistently perform up to a tenth of a grade worse when they study English with high numbers of girls as opposed to few or no girls, Proud found. The more girls there are in an English class, the worse boys perform. This is particularly the case in primary schools, he discovered. Proud will argue that his results show boys should be taught English in single-sex classes. Girls, who outperform boys in English at every stage at school, are unaffected by the number of boys in their English classes. Girls also do better when there are some boys who receive free school meals in their class, Proud found. He said, “The results imply that boys would benefit at all ages from being taught English with as small a proportion of girls as possible. In maths and science, the results tend to imply that both boys and girls benefit from having more girls in the classroom. A mix of the genders in both science and maths is the best choice.” Proud said boys may do worse in English when there is a high proportion of girls in their class because they realize that the girls are better than them. It could also be that teachers use teaching styles more appropriate to girls when there are more girls than boys in the class. Both genders perform better in maths and science at primary school when there are more girls in the class because boys tend to disrupt the class more, he said. Professor Alan Smithers from the University of Buckingham said girls started school with slightly better verbal(语言) skills, while boys started with a slightly greater ability for maths. “Boys might be discouraged by how well girls are doing in English,” he said, “but that still does not explain why they would do better in maths and science with a higher proportion of girls in their class.” 58. It’s widely believed that___________. A. boys do worse in English when there are more girls in their class B. boys do best with “as few girls as possible” in English lessons C. girls are always having a good influence on boys in school D. there is a higher proportion of girls in schools 59. Proud is likely to believe that__________. A. boys perform better in maths and science at primary school when there are many girls B. boys outperform girls in English at every stage C. some boys who receive free school meals do better in English D. boys should be taught English in single-sex classes 60. In terms of the reason why boys’ English grades are up to a tenth worse when high numbers of girls are in the class, Alan Smithers explains that_______________. A. girls started school with slightly better verbal skills B. boys tend to disrupt the class more C. boys started with a slightly greater aptitude for maths D. teachers’ teaching styles are more appropriate to girls D Mum, it's me. Hopefully this Mothering Sunday you will get to hear those three words. I will, of course, try to phone you. I hope we will be able to speak for the allowed 10 minutes. But I suspect many inmates will be using the phone, so if I don't call and if we don't speak, then this is what I would have said: It's not your fault that I am here. I know that deep in your heart you have questioned whether my current circumstance is somehow your fault, if the reckless stupidity of my past is somehow a failure on your part. It is not. Only one person is to blame, only one person should hurt -- me. You have always taught me that when the room goes dark, you can wait for the lights to be switched back on or you can search in the dark and turn the light on yourself. You are my light. You always have been and always will be. There is nobody I admire more, nobody I have strived harder to please in my life, which is why my current failure hurts me so much. I am so sorry that I will not be there to see you, but I want you to know that now, as always, you are here with me. In my darkest hours, and in the coldest loneliness of my past few months, my mind has so often wandered to the past, to when it was you and me -- and I have been able to smile. Yours is the strength that I draw upon. A parent's job is to make sure that they pass on the best of themselves to their children. You have done that. It is the inner you in me that will get me through this. I have failed you, but you have never failed me. If I think back to the tears I shed when Dad left, all those years ago, I see you through their misty glaze. You holding me and you telling me we'd be OK, and we will be. We are and always will be the best team. Childhood heroes such as footballers, actors and rock stars are cliched. If the job's done right, a child's heroes should be their parents -- you are mine. The strength you showed after the divorce from Dad to find your biological parents, to go to university and get your teaching qualifications to begin your life again, is the strength that I draw on now. It is the belief in myself, it is the belief you have in me, that tells me that once I am released I can and will rebuild my life. I will make you proud again. I will make you happy to have me as your son. Yours is the will that gets me through every day. I don't believe you can judge a person for the mistakes they make, as we all make them, but you can judge them for what they do afterwards. And after this, when it is all over, you will still have a son with the same hopes and dreams. They have not diminished. If you can dream it then you have to believe it can happen -- right So, this Mothering Sunday please think back to that morning in the 80s, the first Mother's Day without Dad, when a six-year-old me got up early and made breakfast for you. Do you remember it Could you ever forget A slice of bread a doorstep thick and a wedge of cheese equally dense. You didn't have to eat it, but you did, chewing every dry mouthful. I know now why you forced yourself 一 because it had been made with love. Well, things don't change this year -- this letter is that bread and cheese (it sure has plenty of cheese!). I love you so much. L am sorry I have let you down, but you have aught me that we will always pick ourselves up and become better than we were before. Thank you for everything and this year, more than ever. Happy Mothering Sunday. Love, your son 61.According to the passage, what made the author most upset at present A. __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ __________ Keys: Although curiosity is essential/important to human’s success, it’s gradually neglected / increasingly rare now. Both the rise of the Internet and reduced appetite/interest for/in literary fiction contribute to/lead to people’s declining curiosity. What’s worse, lacking curiosity costs people innovation, entrepreneurship and even knowledge. Therefore, we should keep asking questions to dig deeper and not see it as a burden. Researchers 【答案】DDB B Can dogs and cats get along well in the same home People who are thinking about getting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight.

D. they are introduced at an early age

A. girls started school with slightly better verbal skills B. boys tend to disrupt the class more C. boys started with a slightly greater aptitude for maths D. teachers’ teaching styles are more appropriate to girls 【答案】CDA D Mum, it's me.
