We have two daughters Kristen is seven years old and Kelly is four. Last Sunday evening, we invited some people home for dinner. I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that their job was to join Mommy in answering the door when the bell rang. Mommy would introduce them to the guests, and then they would take the guests’ coats upstairs and put them on the bed in the second bedroom.
The guests arrived. I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids.
Each of the guests made a particular fuss over Kelly, the younger one, admiring her dress, her hair and her smile. They said she was a remarkable girl to be carrying coats upstairs at her age.
I thought to myself that we adults usually make a big "to do" over the younger one because she’s the one who seems more easily hurt. We do it with the best of intentions.
But we seldom think of how it might affect the other child. I was a little worried that Kristen would feel she was being outshined. I was about to serve dinner when I realized that she had been missing for twenty minutes. I ran upstairs and found her in the bedroom, crying.
I said, “What are you doing, my dear ”
She turned to me with a sad expression and said, “Mommy, why don’t people like me the way they like my sister Is it because I’m not pretty Is that why they don’t say nice things about me as much ”
I tried to explain to her, kissing and hugging her to make her feel better.
Now, whenever I visit a friend’s home, I make it a point to speak to the elder child first.
4. The underlined expression “make a big ‘to do’ over” (Paragraph 4) means __________.
A. show much concern about B. have a special effect on

A. beautiful hair B. pretty clothes
C. lovely smile D. young age
6. Kristen felt sad and cried because __________.
A. the guest gave her more coats to carry
B. she didn’t look as pretty as Kelly
C. the guests praised her sister more than her
D. her mother didn’t introduce her to the guests
7 We can conclude from the passage that __________.
A. parents should pay more attention to the elder children
B. the younger children are usually more easily hurt
C. people usually like the younger children more
D. adults should treat children equally
C
She’s one of the most popular children’s book authors. There are very few other writers who can create such magic with their stories. One other such author is J. K. Rowling. But it all started with Enid Blyton, the English writer.
This woman was really a genius (天才), and knew the way to a child’s heart. Many children’s love for reading began with her. She wrote mysteries about boarding school adventures, and there was always something to learn at the end of the story. “Don’t be greedy (贪婪的)” or “It’s good to be kind” or “Be kind to animals” or “Being too naughty will only land you in trouble”. There was always something that kids need to apprehend at a young age.
And she showed all these in the sweetest, most kindly way possible. Everything turned out to be okay in the end and the bad guys got what they deserved (应得的), but nothing too hard. And they became good people in the end. If only the real world was this simple. She’s written books about kids solving problems in the world filled with gods and fairies (仙女) where everyone was good and kind, and lived with enough chocolates and other delicious foods. This world is just what people want.
Do you know the kids’ show that is popular on Pogo Yeah, Enid Blyton created these characters. The series is based on her books. These are just a few. She’s created hundreds and hundreds of characters and more than 400 million copies of her children’s books have been sold worldwide.
Children are crazy about her books and parents and schools are certainly going to make them read her books They’re perfect for kids. Enid Blyton is the reason why I developed such a love for writing stories! She had such a wonderful imagination and knew exactly how to steal a child’s heart. She stole mine.

A. She often tells her children Enid Blyton’s stories.
B. She began to create stories because of Enid Blyton.
C. She suggests teaching Enid Blyton’s stories at school.

Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog's life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life, To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.
Dog expressions also are used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.
12. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. How to live with the dog. B. Expressions related to the word “dog”.
C. American’s love to the dog. D. Dog expressions with the weather.
13. Working too hard can result in______.
A. leading a dog’s life B. becoming sick as a dog
C. living in a dog-eat-dog world D. working like a dog
14. What can we learn from the passage
A. Everyone can be successful if he learns from the old.
B. It might be difficult for the young to learn new skills.
C. Mean dogs aren’t so awful as their appearance in fact.
D. Junkyard dogs are not careful in money arrangement.
15. To support his idea, the author develop the passage mainly by______.
A. listing reasons B. giving examples C. making comparisons D. using quotations

With time going by, Mother’s Day was around the corner. Maybe it is the happiest day for every mother. Bruce, a boy of nine years old, with his little sister Alina. six years old, wanted to buy their mother carnations(康乃馨). But they were too young to get a job, even if a part-time one. What could they do There was only one week left. They felt sad whenever they thought their mother would spend her Mother’s Day without carnations.
Money is hard to make. Buying a bunch of carnations would cost a large sum of money for them. One day when they were wandering at the street, they heard Mr Green was complaining that he had no time to wash those soda pop bottles. It is a kind of soda pop sold in bottles and the bottles can be washed and filled again. Mr Green ran that grocery shop by himself, so he had no time to wash them. "Would you like to try, Alina " Bruce asked his sister suddenly. Alina nodded her head without hesitation. After all, both of them knew that maybe it was an opportunity for them to make money for the flowers.
They walked a few steps and came near Mr Green. They looked up at Mr Green and asked whether they could help him to wash those bottles. Mr Green looked at them curiously until he was told the reason. He agreed and promised that he would pay 0.1 dollar for every bottle. Bruce and Alina were very happy even though they knew they would have a busy week.
They came to Mr Green’s shop in the next seven days when they came back from school. On the morning of Mother’s Day, they got the pay ——6.1 dollars. The boy also had 0.3 dollar saved. So with a total of 6.4 dollars they walked about a mile to where a flower shop was located.

The guests arrived I introduced my two daughters to each of them.

A. beautiful hair B. pretty clothes

B. she didn’t look as pretty as Kelly
C. the guests praised her sister more than her
D. her mother didn’t introduce her to the guests
7. We can conclude from the passage that __________.
A. parents should pay more attention to the elder children

C. people usually like the younger children more
D. adults should treat children equally
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. C 7. D

Children are crazy about her books and parents and schools are certainly going to make them read her books. They’re perfect for kids. Enid Blyton is the reason why I developed such a love for writing stories! She had such a wonderful imagination and knew exactly how to steal a child’s heart. She stole mine.
8. Why did Enid Blyton win the author’s praise
A. She cared for children very much.
B. She could make children love reading.

B. Enid Blyton’s writing skills.
C. What is in Enid Blyton’s books.
D. What Enid Blyton’s favourite characters are.
11. What can we guess about the author from the last paragraph
A. She often tells her children Enid Blyton’s stories.
B. She began to create stories because of Enid Blyton.
C. She suggests teaching Enid Blyton’s stories at school.
D. She hopes to live a life just as Enid Blyton wrote.
