A roadside system that detects if a mobile phone is in use in a passing vehicle is being tested in the UK first. Despite being unable to tell whether the driver is using the phone, it is hoped that it will act as a warning to people who make calls behind the wheel. The technology picks up the phone signal in the vehicle and activates a roadside warning sign of a mobile phone with a red line through it.
The system cannot tell the difference between a driver and a passenger on a bus, but to some degree it can warn drivers that they can be detected using their phones. Using a directional antenna (天线),the detector picks up radio waves produced by a phone handset, and measures the signal strength and length of them. When a signal is detected of duration (持续时间) long enough and signal strength strong enough to set off the system, the detector activates the warning sign. The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections or hands-free devices which, when picked up, will prevent the activation.
While this new system is no replacement for a police officer catching someone in the act, it could be enough to make some drivers think twice- and that has to be a positive step forward. However, just as technology has enabled the problem of drivers using mobile phones illegally, it can also be a big part of the solution in getting people to stop. Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said. The council said that enabling the system to record specific number plates could be a "future development".
Using a mobile phone at the wheel is one of the four road crimes which can have horrible consequences if it causes a deadly or serious car crash. Law enforcement (执行) technology has been falling behind for a decade and not made any easier by motor producers that encourage users to plug in their phones even before driving.
4. Why is the roadside system used according to Paragraph 1
A To send out cellphone signals to drivers.
B. To detect drivers' illegal use of cellphone.
C. To monitor people's use of phones while driving.
D. To warm people against using pones while driving.
5. How does the detector of the roadside system work
A. It measures the length of the phone. B. It warns drivers with a phone in hand.
C. It picks up radio waves from handsets. D. It activates the vehicle's Bluetooth system.
6. What does the text suggest drivers do with the road warning sign
A. Swift to Bluetooth while driving. B. Have a close watch of road signs.
C. Avoid being picked up by detectors. D. Stop using a hands-free mobile phone.
7. What will the county council probably do in the future
A. Share the devices with the police. B. Make the system more advanced.
C. Replace the police with the new system. D. Take steps to settle road safety problems.

Having a great collection of books at home doesn’t really mean that you are a person who has a passion for literature and reading. It can be a family inheritance(继承) or it can be just to impress people around you about the fact that you are a person of culture. On the other hand, there are many persons who cannot afford to buy books, because some of them are quite expensive, but they usually go to libraries and spend hours reading something that interests them a lot, or just borrow books to read at home.
From my point of view, literature is very important in our lives from several points of view. For example, reading is a means of gaining culture and enriching our knowledge in different areas of activities. It can help us have a great imagination and it makes things easier when it comes to making compositions on different themes. It gives you the possibility to speak about science, even if you don’t work in this field, or you can express your opinion about a political aspect, just because you have read something connected to that.
Secondly, literature offers us the possibility to enter the world of imagination, and to leave apart the real one for a couple of hours. We come to meet kings and queens many years ago, dream in the world of the rich or imagine how life will be in the future. Sometimes, we identify ourselves with the characters in the stories we read and they can give us some clues to solve our problems and how to react in certain circumstances.
To conclude, I would like to say that literature is the perfect means to enrich our culture, to express correctly and have a rich vocabulary, to be able to interfere(干涉) in conversations in different fields of interest and to really be considered an erudite person.
8. The people who are fond of literature are those that _________.
A. go to libraries on weekends
B. buy expensive books in the bookstore
C. keep many books in their studies
D. have much interest in reading
9. We can learn from the third paragraph that _________.
A. we can bring kings and queens back to life
B. what we read can be useful in our daily life
C. it is very good for us to stay alone for some hours
D. we can make friends with the people in the stories
10. The underlined word “erudite” in the last paragraph probably means_________.
A. hard-working B. enthusiastic
C. learned D. creative
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To advise readers to like reading.
B. To explain the true meaning of reading.
C. To tell readers how to read a book.
D. To tell readers who has the real passion for literature.
D
Dear Editors of Macquarie Dictionary,
My name is Wendy, a second generation Chinese-Australian migrant and a mother of two young children. I’m writing to express my disappointment in one of Macquarie Dictionary’s entries, namely the definition of the word “monolid”.
In both the paper version(7th edition)and online version of the Dictionary, Macquarie defines “monolid” as: “An upper eyelid without a fold, perceived by some in Asia to give an appearance of laziness. ” This definition has disturbed me and many Asians living in Australia. Linguistically, the term “monolid” is a pretty unbiased description of a physical characteristic that involves no feelings, common to over 50% of people of East Asian origin. It’s no different to other terms describing a physical feature including “blonde” or “freckle”.
Take a minute and consider this. Would it be appropriate if the definition of “blonde” became “having fair or light-colored hair, thought by some in Western countries as possessing little or no intelligence” Or would it be appropriate if the definition of “freckle” was “a small brownish spot in the skin or face, thought by some as creating an ugly appearance”
In addition, it is also inappropriate that Macquarie Dictionary — a dictionary of choice by many Australian schools — defines a term in a way which may create negative racial connection for Australian children of East Asian origin. Both my kids are born with monolids, a constant reminder of their cultural background. It therefore breaks my heart to imagine a scene where they turn to the dictionary to find that their physical feature is associated with “laziness”. What if they get teased by their school friends that they are born “lazy” What if my sensitive older son starts hating himself and his race classification for being associated with something negative
For the reasons above, I urge Macquarie Dictionary to adjust the current definition of “monolid”.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Wendy
12. The author’s purpose of writing this letter is ________.
A. to ask for an apology about the wrong doing to the people with monolids
B. to offer advice on how to define a word
C. to express dissatisfaction with a definition
D. to give examples of defining physical features
13. What does underlined word “unbiased” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Precise. B. Public.
C. Subjective. D. Objective.
14. What is the function of paragraph 3
A. Supporting the author’s position. B. Raising the author’s concern.
C. Attacking the dictionary . D. Introducing two words in the dictionary.
15. In what way is the author worried about her children
A. They might get into bad habits and be lazy.
B. They might become victims of the definition.
C. They might have monolids.
D. They might choose to use the dictionary.

47. 读后续写
The story between Mr. Jordan and me was the most amazing story I wanted to share. Mr. Jordan was one of the teachers who I would never forget.
When I was young at school, I loved talking, a characteristic not always appreciated by Mr. Jordan, my 10-grade English teacher.
Mr. Jordan was a teacher whom no one liked because he was too strict. He stood about 5-foot-five, was very thin and wore his hair pulled back in a way that gave him a horsy look. He wore those half-circular reading glasses. Whenever he got upset, he would lower his head and look at you over the top of his glasses.
One day in his class I was busy talking. I didn’t realize he had stopped teaching and staring straight at me. “Sam, I would like to see you after school.”
Later Mr. Jordan explained in a low, but very firm voice that showed he expected me to listen when he was talking. For punishment he told me to write a thousand-word essay on education and its effect on the society. He wanted it in by the following Wednesday.
Well, I met my deadline. I was confident. It was a good paper. And I expected a sign of approval from him. The next day in class, however, he was looking at me over his glasses. He called me forward and returned my paper. “Go back and rewrite,” he said. “Remember, each paragraph is supported to begin with a topic sentence.” When he gave my paper back a second time, he corrected the grammar. The third time, the spelling. The fourth time, it was punctuation. The fifth, it wasn’t neat enough. I was sick!
The sixth time, I rewrote the whole paper slowly in ink, leaving generous space. When he saw it, he removed his glasses and smiled. He firmly accepted the paper. After that, I put the whole thing out of my mind.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

A. To send out cellphone signals to drivers.

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. A

A to ask for an apology about the wrong doing to the people with monolids
B. to offer advice on how to define a word
C. to express dissatisfaction with a definition
D. to give examples of defining physical features
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. B
【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇应用文。文章是一位母亲写给麦格理词典编辑的一封信,她认为词典中关于“monolid”一词的释义含有不恰当词汇,担心会给自己的孩子造成困扰,希望词典可以调整这一单词的定义。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“I’m writing to express my disappointment in one of Macquarie Dictionary’s entries, namely the definition of the word ‘monolid’.(我写信是为了表达我对麦考瑞字典的一个条目的失望,即单词‘monolid’一词的定义)”可知,作者写信是为了表达对一个定义的不满意,故选C项。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词后文“description of a physical characteristic that involves no feelings, common to over 50% of people of East Asian origin. It's no different to other term describing a physical feature including ‘blonde’ or ‘freckle’.(是一种不带感彩的身体特征的描述,超过50%的东亚血统的人都有这种特征。这个词和其他描述身体特征的词,如‘金发’或‘雀斑’没有区别)”可知,从语言学上讲,“monolid”一词其他描述身体特征的词没有区别,比如“金发”或“雀斑”。由此可推知,画线词意思为“不带感彩的,客观的”,D项Objective表示 “客观的”,符合句意。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Take a minute and consider this. Would it be appropriate if the definition of ‘blonde’ became ‘having fair or light-coloured hair, thought by some in Western countries as possessing little or no intelligence’ Or would it be appropriate if the definition of ‘freckle’ was ‘a small brownish spot in the skin or face, thought by some as creating an ugly appearance’ (花一分钟想一下:如果‘金发’的定义变成了‘拥有白皙或浅色的头发,在一些西方国家被认为没有智慧’是否合适?或者,如果‘雀斑’的定义是‘皮肤或脸上的一个小棕色斑点,被一些人认为会造成难看的外观’这是否合适?)”以及第四段中“In addition, it is also inappropriate that Macquarie Dictionary—a dictionary of choice by many Australian schools-defines a term in a way which may create negative racial connection for Australian children of East Asian origin.(此外,许多澳大利亚学校选择的麦考瑞词典在定义一个词时,可能会给东亚出身的澳大利亚孩子带来负面的种族联系,这也是不合适的) ”由此可推知,第3段的作用是支持作者的立场。故选A。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“It therefore breaks my heart to imagine a scene where they turn to the dictionary to find that their physical feature is associated with ‘laziness’. What if they get teased by their school friends that they are born ‘lazy’ What if my sensitive older son starts hating himself and his race classification for being associated with something negative (因此,想象一个场景,他们翻字典发现他们的身体特征与‘懒惰’有关,这让我心碎。如果他们被学校的同学取笑说自己‘懒惰’呢?如果我敏感的大儿子因为他和一些负面的东西联系在一起开始憎恨自己和他的种族呢?)”可知,作者担心词典上这个词的释义会她的孩子带来麻烦,让孩子成为受害者,故选B。

Paragraph 1:

Paragraph 2:
I was amazed, thrilled and grateful.

【答案】One day after two weeks, Mr. Jordan came into the class and said,“Class, do you still remember the essay contest held in our school? They’ve announced the winners. I am so glad to inform you that Sam has won the first prize in the essay contest with the title ‘Education and Its Effect on the Society’.” Then thunderous applause rocked the classroom. After class, many classmates asked me how I made it. Without excellent writing skills, I well remembered that I told them it was all about six-times rewriting urged by Mr. Jordan.
I was amazed, thrilled and grateful. It was the first time I had ever won a prize. Years later, I told many people that story, and my comments, including my unfriendly description of Mr. Jordan’s appearance. Unexpectedly, Mr. Jordan wrote to me, and said that his look wasn’t important. What was important was the lesson I had learnt. When I wrote and rewrote that paper for him, I began to learn how to discipline myself. I was grateful for the lesson he had taught me.

②由第二段首句内容“我感到惊讶、激动和感激。”可知,第二段可描写作者把这个故事和对乔丹先生外表的不友好描述分享给其他人,乔丹先生写信给作者,说他的长相不重要,重要的是作者学到的教训。
