The producer appeared behind the recording studio window and smiled and waved to me like an old friend. And after I had read out a little test piece, he said, “That’s fine, wonderful, your voice is perfect, lively, wonderful.” Then I read a longer passage in English about the delights of touring in Britain, and another about the delights of visiting London, and both were “excellent” and “just right’’, and I began to consider a job in radio.
To be honest, I was fairly sure of myself though I lacked experience. Across the room in the Hamburg News Agency where we both worked, a friend named Peter Turner called to me, “I say, Mike, a man on the phone here wants someone to do a recording in English, and I’m booked up. Would you read something to him in English as a sort of test ” I did, and they said, “Perfect, lovely,wonderful,...” Would I come round
It was after reading their passage in English in the studio that they noticed my vowel (元音) pronunciations were not altogether King’s English,or even Prince Philip’s, there was a larger silence than usual, then the voice said: “Fine, lovely…,but you said the word ‘castle’ with a short ‘a’ . Could we have the passage again please, but this time say ‘castle’.” This was easy. But then he noticed other differences in my pronunciation. “It’s my northern English accent,” I said angrily because I had to apologize for it.
“Oh, I see...but Mike, we’ll have to get it right, I’m afraid. The recording is for teaching English to German schoolchildren, and it must be spoken in the way it taught in German schools.”
I read the passage again...and again...and again. But of course you cannot change the pronunciation of a lifetime in an hour. The studio men were in the state of having lost hope and underlined the vowels which caused me to feel angry, so that I’d remember them. Few, really. But because I had to concentrate (集中) on them, I make a lot of mistakes in my reading. Everyone got somewhat irritable (易怒的), so we all went out for a beer.

A. German schoolchildren did not like a northern accent
B. it was different from the English taught in German schools
C. it was different from the English spoken in Germany
D. German schoolchildren were taught through recordings
7. Why did Mike’s reading of the passage get worse
A. He needed a drink to clear his throat.
B. He was trying to do the recording in an hour.
C. He was trying hard to get certain sounds right.
D. He could not learn so many new sounds.

When it comes to having a healthy body, seeing may be believing. Experiments suggest that people who are shown pictures of their clogged arteries may be more likely to stay healthy than people who do not.
Researchers studied just over 3,500 people. These people were between 40 and 60 years of age. Each person had at least one risk for heart disease, but no signs of the disorder. The researchers divided these subjects into two groups. The first group received what was called usual care — like taking medicine or talking with health care workers about heart disease. However, the members of the other group were shown pictures of their arteries. Researchers also gave them special guidance on why those pictures might be a sign of future health problems. One year later, the people who watched the images of their own arteries had less risk for heart disease than those who weren’t shown the pictures. That is where the “pictures” part may help.
Doctors warn that many people think they have healthy hearts but, actually, they do not. Clogged arteries can be a silent killer. It takes many years to develop and patients may show no signs until the condition is serious and difficult to treat. Because it is a silent killer, experts say patients only remember a small part of what their doctor tells them to do. Seeing a picture is much more effective. To use a popular English expression,“A picture is worth a thousand words.”
Smoking, an unhealthy habit, and being short of exercise increase the risk of heart attacks. Exercising for at least 30 minutes every day of the week will help to prevent heart disease. Eating at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day, and limiting your salt intake to less than on spoon a day, also helps to prevent heart attacks.
8. What can we learn from the second paragraph
A. Both of the two groups received so-called usual care.
B. More than 3,500 people of all ages took part in the study.
C. Seeing pictures f possible illness helps people to keep healthy.
D. Heart disease is more difficult to treat without medicine.
9. Why are clogged arteries a silent killer
A. Some people are doubtful about what doctors say.
B. People can’t feel the development of the disease.
C. Clogged arteries can kill a person in a short time.
D. The illness has a bad influence on people’s brain health.
10. What does the underlined word “effective” probably mean in Paragraph 3
A. Interesting. B. Dangerous. C. Common. D. Helpful.
11. What should we do to prevent heart attacks according to the text
A. Stop or avoid smoking. B. Take as much sugar as salt.
C. Exercise once a week. D. Eat as many nuts as possible.
D
Everyday wear like casual shirts,T-shirts, and jackets, embroidered (刺绣)with traditional patterns from the Yi ethnic group, staged a striking show at recent New York Fashion Week, which took place on September 4th. Chinese designer Wang Ta’s new youth collection, decorated with Yi embroidery, a Chinese intangible cultural heritage, was a definite hit on the last night of the fashion week.
The audience was amazed by both the beautiful and mostly hand-embroidered colorful patterns and the perfect balance of modern and traditional elements. Leah Coulter, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, who dressed the models for the show, said the collection was a mix of old and new and loved all the patterns and embroidery, which aroused her interest in the unique handicraft dating back thousands of years. “I need to learn more about its history,” Coulter said.
It’s not something new in the fashion world to involve China’s intangible cultural heritages as elements of design Wang said, but ifs not easy to make them into true fashion. “Intangible cultural heritages should not always be displayed in museums or only appear on souvenirs. I hope to break the stereotype through using the Yi embroidery and make them everyday, fashionable items,”Wang told the media after the show. “I think fashion is the best way to introduce culture”
Wang’s design ideas can be traced back to both her global experience as a fashion designer in Japan, the UK and China, and her unique educational background. Before receiving her second degree in fashion from Japan’s top fashion institute Tokyo Mode Gakuen, she majored in history at East China Normal University in Shanghai.
In order to create her collection, Wang and her team went to Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture (自治州)in southwest China’s Yunnan Province and deeply studied the culture and history of Yi’s craftsmanship to gain insight into the essence, delicacy and symbolism of Yi embroidery. But Wang’s employing the patterns, colors and techniques of Yi embroidery in her contemporary fashion designs is not a simple imitation. The combination of modern and traditional parts can’t be too striking for it to be widely accepted as everyday wear, Wang said, adding that her goal is for people, regardless of gender, color or nationality, to like her designs.
12. What made Wang Ta’s design appealing to the audience
A. The delicate hand-embroidered costumes in Yi culture.
B. The striking design of Chinese intangible cultural heritage.
C. The brilliant combination of traditional and modern parts.
D. The diversity of ethnic cultures displayed in the youth clothes.
13. What does the underlined word “stereotype” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. fixed impression B. unique style
C. commercial trend D. controversial type
14. Which of the following contributes to Wang’s design ideas
A. Her fashion educational background only at home.
B. Her travelling experiences across ethnic regions in Yunnan Province.
C. Her working experiences in some European and Asian countries.
D. Her goal to be famous worldwide.
15. What is the most suitable title for the passage
A. Revive a Culture in Fashion
B. Apply China’s Ethnic Elements in Fashion
C. Wang Ta—China’s Talented Designer
D. China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Forgiveness
To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.
___16___ Try the following steps:
Calm yourself. ___17___ You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.
Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. ___18___ Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.
Take the control away from your offender (冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
___19___ If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.
Don’t forget to forgive yourself. ___20___ But it can rob you of your self confidence if you don’t do it.
A. Why should you forgive
B. How should you start to forgive
C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.
D. Try to see things from your offender’s angle.
E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.
F. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress management technique.
G. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.

【分析】这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了去伦敦和巴黎这两个欧洲最大的旅游目的地旅行的交通方式的详细信息。
【1题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“What about the train-ferry combination that many recall fondly from their childhoods Well, though it's budget-saving, this option is too time-consuming today, so better leave it to your memories. (那么,许多人回忆起的在童年时的火车轮渡组合呢?好吧,虽然这节省了预算,但这个选择在今天太费时了,所以最好留给你的记忆) ”可知,作者不建议搭乘火车轮渡组合。根据Air trips中“* One-way fares from Paris can be as low as ?49; * From London, Air France flies with fares as low as 39(?46), and British Airways as low as 48(?56) (从巴黎来的单程票价可以低到?49;从伦敦起飞,法航的机票价格低到 39(?46),英国航空公司的最低水平 48(?56)) ”可知,乘坐飞机往返的最低票价是49+46=95欧元;根据Rail trips中“* Fares begin at a reasonable 58(?68), round trip; (票价以合理的价格开始 58(?68),往返)”可知,乘火车的话往返最低是68欧元;根据Bus trip中“* One-way Eurolines fares begin at ?15;* One-way OUIBUS fares begin at ?15 too, but early bird sales can even lower the fare. (Eurolines线路的单程票价从?15起;OUIBUS线路的单程票从?15起,但早起购买可以得到更低票价)”可知乘汽车,往返票价最低是30欧元,甚至更低。由此可知,往返旅行最贵的就是乘飞机。故选B。

(通过提前预订可以获得非常低的单程票价,但这当然很少见,这还不包括往返机场的出租车和火车票价) ”;Rail trips中“The earlier you book, the more you save. (你预订得越早,省的钱就越多)”以及Bus trip中“One-way OUIBUS fares begin at ?15 too, but early bird sales can even lower the fare. (OUIBUS线路的单程票从?15起,但早起购买可以得到更低票价)”可知,这三种旅行方式的共同点是:如果提前预定的话,会便宜点。故选A。

【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

It’s not something new in the fashion world to involve China’s intangible cultural heritages as elements of design, Wang said, but ifs not easy to make them into true fashion.

C. Wang Ta—China’s Talented Designer
D. China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage
