Dear Editor,
I’m a Senior I student in a middle school. This term, my favorite teacher, Miss Mao, no longer teaches us. I want to see her, but I’m afraid that she no longer likes me and I don’t want to trouble her. I really miss her. What should I do
Tian Yan
Dear Tian Yan,
It’s bad luck that you have lost your favorite teacher. But, if she is still in your school, nothing can stop you going to see her. When she isn’t busy, ask her if she minds having a quick chat. You can then tell her she was your favorite teacher—everyone is happy to know that he or she is liked!
If she has left the school, it will be more difficult to meet her. It will be hard, but remember people always come and go in their lives. We can’t rely on them to be with us all the time.
You may be sad to say goodbye to her, but we can remember and learn from her. Think of her best qualities.
You could also try looking for similar qualities in your other teachers. Study hard and give your new teacher a chance. In time, you might start to see that he or she has different qualities to learn from.
Finally you can not completely rely on other people to get you through your studies, or even your life.
Editor

How to Become a Better Student
Maybe you are not a good student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to.
Here is how.
Plan your time carefully.
When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule(计划表) of your time. First arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all the problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study.
Look around the house for a good study .Keep this place, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV!When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.
Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly.
When you get home from school,go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude about the tests.
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you to remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test,so don't be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
4. According to the text,a schedule may NOT include ________.
A. a list of things you have to do B. what you have to do every day
C. enough time for entertainment D. something will happen unexpectedly
5. A good place for study should be a place where ________.
A. everything needed is available B. a writing desk is in the corner of a room only
C. nothing is there except your study materials D. it is comfortable to stay
6. The underlined sentence in Tip 5 suggests “________”.
A. Tests are the most necessary art in your study
B. Take a test as a friend in need in your study
C. The world will come to an end unless you pass all tests
D. Never let tests trouble you in your study
7. Which of the following is NOT true
A. Reading materials in your textbook before class will help.
B. In the writer's opinion, there are five methods for your study.
C. It is necessary to go over your notes at home.
D. There are many other methods besides those mentioned.

In Cos Angel, a waiter served a group of teens. The waiter remembered his experience as a young high school prudent. So he made sure the teens had a pleasant experience at the restaurant. The waiter made sure of it.
After serving all the teens doing a great job, he was left a tip(消费),only$3.28. That was hardly enough to buy a drink at Roebucks.
The waiter went home. And he felt hatred for the students who did not know the value of hard work. They looked down on people like him. Or so he thought.
After several days, the waiter forgot about it. His life went on as usual. But ten days later, he received a letter from the teens.
“About a week and a half ago, on October 7, my three friends and I came to eat at this restaurant as our own homecoming celebration. It was an exciting experience for us to be here alone, and it was all new to us. And you were the best waiter we could ask for. You were kind, helpful, and didn’t treat us like babies! So I want to say thank you for making our ‘groan-up’ experience so amazing and fun.
“I would also like to say sorry on behalf of(代表) my group. Since we were new to all of this, reasonable(合乎情理),but we had completely forgotten(and didn’t know,to be honest) what a tip even was, let alone how much to give. So we emptied our pockets, and all our money added up to $3.28.
“Having no idea of how small this really was ,we left. Later, we realized our mistake and felt terrible. We knew we had to make it right.
“So together with this letter, you will find the correct 18% tip + extra for simply being amazing. Thank you for your help and patience and also thank you for making our night fun. Thank you!”
8. How did the waiter receive the group of teens
A. He tried to make then pay more.
B. He served them like other waiters.
C. He treated them as young children.
D. He did his best to make them happy.
9. Why did the group of teens leave that small tip
A. Because they looked down on the waiter.
B. Because they didn't know what a tip meant.
C. Because they weren't pleased with the service.
D. Because they thought the tip should be that much.
10. What made the teens write the letter
A. The tip they left for the waiter.
B. The bill the restaurant received.
C. The way the waiter served them.
D. The fun they had at the restaurant.
11. What do restaurant waiters mind most in America
A. What kind of guests they receive.
B. What dishes people usually order.
C. Whether they are given reasonable tips.

根据第一段第三句“So he made sure the teens had a pleasant experience at the restaurant. ” (因此,他确保这些孩子在餐厅有愉快的经历。)可知,侍者尽自己最大的努力来使孩子们开心。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段最后两句“Since we were new to all of this, reasonable(合乎情理),but we had completely forgotten(and didn’t know,to be honest) what a tip even was, let alone how much to give. So we emptied our pockets, and all our money added up to $3.28.”(因为我们对这一切都是新手,合乎情理的,但我们完全忘记了(说实话,也不知道)小费是什么,更不用说给多少了。
根据倒数第二段“Having no idea of how small this really was ,we left. Later, we realized our mistake and felt terrible. We knew we had to make it right”(没有意识我们给的小费有多么少,我们离开了。
根据第三段第二句“And he felt hatred for the students who did not know the value of hard work. They looked down on people like him. Or so he thought.”(他对那些不知道努力的价值的学生感到厌恶。

Many people believe that you lose the ability to learn new languages as you get older. Language experts, however, will tell you that you’re never too old to learn a new language. As you get older, it can be more difficult to learn a new language, though.
Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities. Adults, on the other hand, are already part of a language community. Learning a new language means becoming part of another language community, and adults rarely get the chance to practice as much as young children do.
Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language.
When young children learn a new language, they come to see various languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset(思维模式) helps them embrace learning a new language without feeling like they’re doing something unusual or “too hard”.
So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It’s never too late to learn a new language. If you’re older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you’re a young child, though, now is the time to step out and learn a new language!
12. By “language is their life”, the author means that children .
A. can’ t live without language
B. lead a happy life every day
C. practice a new language a lot
D. are taken good care of adults
13. What may make it hard for the old people to learn to a new language
A. They are afraid of being laughed at
B. They usually have too many interests
C. They think making mistakes is natural
D. They always make all kinds of mistakes
14. Which of the following shows the difference between children and adults in learning a new language
A. The behaviors they have
B. The learning attitudes
C. The future plans they have made
D. The materials they are using
15. According to the author, a new language .
A. can never be learned by the old people
B. can be grasped by the old people easily
C. can be understood only by the old people
D. can be learned by both the old and the young
C 13. A 14. B 15. D
For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities.他们每年学习数千个小时,因为他们需要学习语言才能成为他们社区的一部分和young children can accumulate(积累) those hours over several years as they grow up.
Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language. 故选A。
Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. When young children learn a new language, they come to see various languages as a “normal” part of society.
It’s never too late to learn a new language. If you’re older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you’re a young child, though, now is the time to step out and learn a new language!

故填a。
故填for。
故填was。
allow sb. to do sth. 故填to go。

故填which或that。
故填your。

Finally, you can not completely rely on other people to get you through your studies, or even your life.

Thank you!”
