Eugene O'Neill, who was born in 1888, in New York, was a leading American drama writer and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936. His father was a successful touring actor. Because of that, Eugene spent his early childhood in hotels, on trains, and backstage. Although later in his life he grew to hate his father for not giving him security(安全感)in his early years and a loving, comfortable family, he had the theater in his blood.
As a student, O'Neill went to boarding schools(寄宿制学校)but spent the summers in a moderate house his family owned. He left Princeton University in 1907, only about one year after he entered it, to start what he later called his real education in “life experience”。 At the age of 24, he was employed as a reporter and poetry column writer for the New London Telegraph, where he worked for only a few months.
O'Neill didn't cut a figure in playwriting until the summer of 1916, when he was in a peaceful village of Provincetown, Massachusetts, where some young writers and artists had founded an experimental theater. Before that, he had written awkward plays that were hardly accepted by the mainstream of American theater. While O'Neill was only one of those whose plays were produced by the theater, he led the group to success because of his contribution within the next few years. Between 1916 and 1920, the theater produced all of O'Neill's one-act plays. By the time his first full-length play, Beyond the Horizon, was produced on Broadway on February 2, 1920 at the Morosco Theater, the young playwright already had a small fame.
Theater critics(评论家)spoke highly of Beyond the Horizon for its tragic realism. The play brought O'Neill more public attention, as well as his first Pulitzer Prize. Besides that, he won another three for Anna Christie, Strange Interlude, and Long Day's Journey into Night. Over the next two decades, O'Neill continued to gain fame nationally and globally. He became the most widely translated and produced dramatist after Shakespeare and Bernard Shaw.
24. What might inspire O'Neill's love for theater
A. His father's job. B. The support of his family.
C. Hotel rooms he had lived in. D. Stories he had heard on trains.
25. Why did O'Neill drop out of Princeton University in 1907
A. He didn't want to study in a boarding school.
B. He wanted to receive real education from life.
C. He got a job from the New London Telegraph.
D. He was quite unsatisfied with the university life.
26. What does the underlined phrase "cut a figure" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Show interest. B. Hold a degree.
C. Attract attention. D. Receive an award.
27. What can we learn about O'Neill's Beyond the Horizon
A. It inspired him to create another three dramas.
B. It drew theater critics' attention to tragic realism.
C. It helped him win more fame in the field of theater.
D. It made him the most widely translated dramatist.

California researchers developed a glove with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language into English in real time through an app on your smartphone.
Unlike previous gloves, the new one is light, inexpensive and long-lasting. The device could help solve the problem of communication between signers and non-signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with nonsigners without needing someone else to translate for them.
The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove-like device, at the same time teaching a machine how to recognize them.
The glove has thin sensors made from “electrically conducting materials” that run up each finger and turn the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin sized” circuit board placed on the person's wrist which then wirelessly moves them over to a smartphone.
The system was able to recognize 660 hand movements and finger placements that stand for each letter in the English alphabet, different phrases and each number. The algorithm recognized the correct signs about 99% of the time, and in less than one second- or about at one word per second.
However, researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to be sold in stores.
28. Who is the new glove designed for
A. Translators. B. Deaf people. C. English learners. D. Sign language users.
29. What does Paragraph 4 mainly say about the new glove
A. How it works. B. What it is made up of.
C. How reliable it is. D. What benefits it has.
30. What will researchers need to do with the glove in the future
A. Enlarge its size. B. Change its appearance.
C. Extend its service life. D. Improve its performance.
31. Where does this text most probably come from
A. A travel website. B. A science newspaper.
C. A fashion magazine. D. A project handbook.

Local bamboo plantations in Europe have ensured that giant pandas in Belgium and the United Kingdom have been fed with enough fresh bamboo during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to zookeepers.
Every week, there are about 1,000 kilograms of fresh bamboos delivered from a French bamboo plantation called La Bambouseraie to the Belgian zoo of Pairi Daiza where two giant pandas plus their three babies live.
Mathieu Goedefroy, spokesman of the zoo, said “It is very important for us to be assured that we always and at every time are able to provide fresh bamboo of the highest quality for our dear pandas. That's why we decide to buy this growing house.”
Since 1856, when a botanist Eugene Mazel began his first plantings by making species from all the world used to the plantation, La Bamhouseraie has developed into a park growing more than 240 varieties of bamboo now.
Of the 1,000 kilograms of bamboo delivered to the zoo each week, only a small part is eaten by the pandas. The other animals can consume the rest of it so that none is wasted.
The story is similar in the U. K. 's Edinburgh Zoo where the fresh bamboo has been shipped from the Netherlands. Jo Elliot, the animal collection manager at the zoo, said, “We have made sure that our stores have enough supplies. The pandas need their bamboo. Most of it gets shipped in from the Netherlands, and at the moment that is fine. We are still getting deliveries. ”
In early May, Canada's Calgary Zoo said it would have to send back two giant pandas to China, since fewer flights, as a result of COVID-19, were causing a lack of bamboo for the pandas. An adult giant panda eats about 35 kilograms of bamboo shoots, or kilograms of fresh bamboo and bamboo leaves daily. There was no locally grown bamboo in Calgary, so supplies of bamboo had relied on the shipments from China.
“We have also contacted our workmates from Calgary, Canada,” Goedefroy said. “We'll see if we could be of any help for them with our bamboo supplies. ”
32. Where does Pairi Daiza get bamboo for their pandas
A. From a zoo in China. B. From a French plantation.
C. From a zoo in Belgium. D. From a plantation in the Netherlands.
33. What is the similarity between the Edinburgh Zoo and Pairi Daiza
A. They make full use of the bamboo. B. They have to return pandas to China.
C. They have enough bamboo supplies. D. They got bamboo from the same place.
34. What can be inferred about Calgary Zoo from the last two paragraphs
A. It could grow some bamboo soon. B. Pairi Daiza may send bamboo to it.
C. It will give less bamboo to pandas. D. There will be no more pandas living in it.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. COVID-19 Harmed Pandas' Health. B. COVID-19 Brought Chances to Zoos.
C. European Plantations Grew Bamboo Well. D. European Zoos Kept Enough Supply of Bamboo.

A Show interest.

These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin sized” circuit board placed on the person's wrist, which then wirelessly moves them over to a smartphone.

K. 's Edinburgh Zoo, where the fresh bamboo has been shipped from the Netherlands.
