As a final attempt,I messaged the coffee shop’s Facebook page asking if they’d seen it. I
knew it was unlikely, but I wanted to try asking if it was handed in because money was tight. By some miracle, they replied saying that they had it!I headed for the coffee shop immediately. I was recognized by the cashier instantly I arrived at the shop. She handed me a shiny new note. I was puzzled about it. Mine was wrinkled and had repeated fold marks.
I said, “Oh…This isn’t mine;my note was an old worn one.” The cashier replied,“No,no, it is yours. Don’t worry;just take it.” At her insistence, I took it. It wasn’t until later that I realized all the staff were most likely to try to help out a struggling student with their own money. A few months later, things got easier after I got a part-time job,and now I’ve graduated and have a good job. I have been a regular customer at the coffee shop ever since!

Text 10
M: For years, thousands have traveled to the Rocky Mountains in search of hidden treasure. Adventurers were on the hunt for a bronze box. It was said to be filled with diamonds, rubies, and gold. On June 6, news broke that the box was finally found. The person who found it has chosen to remain unidentified. Forrest Fenn is an antiques collector. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Fenn created the treasure hunt more than 10 years ago. He hoped it would inspire people to explore nature. Fenn received a picture confirming that the box had been found. Fenn published an autobiography in 2010. It’s called The Thrill of the Chase. In the book, he gave some clues about where the treasure box was located. The clues were in a form of a 24-verse poem. Readers had to use the poem to solve the puzzle. A few people even died in the attempt. The jewel-filled box is estimated to be worth more than $1 million. It took him two trips to bring everything to the hiding spot. “I feel halfway kind of glad, halfway kind of sad because the chase is over,” Fenn says. “I congratulate the thousands of people who participated in the search and hope they will continue to be drawn by the promise of other discoveries.”沭阳县2021-2022学年高二上学期期中调研测试

While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport, I had one of those life changing experiences. While waiting, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.
First, he greeted his younger son as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long and loving hug. I heard the father say, “It’s so good to see you, son. I miss you so much!” His son smiled somewhat shyly, and replied softly, “Me too, Dad!”
Then the man stood up, looked at his older son and said, “You’re already quite a young man. I love you very much!” They hugged a most loving hug.
While this was happening, a baby girl was squirming(来回扭动)excitedly in her mother’s arms. The man said, “Hi, baby!” as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest.
After several moments, he handed his daughter to his older son and declared, “I’ve saved the best for last!” and gave his wife the long, deepest kiss I ever remember seeing. He looked at her eyes for several seconds and then quickly said, “I love you so much!” For an instant, they reminded me of newly-weds but I knew they couldn’t be. I was puzzled about it for a moment, then realized how totally I was lost in the wonderful show of unconditionally love not more than an arm’s length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I were invading something sacred, but was surprised to hear my own voice nervously ask, “Wow! How long have you two been married ”
“Fourteen years,” he replied without leaving his eyes from his wife’s face.
“Then how long have you been away ” The man finally looked at me, still giving his joyous smile and told me, “Two whole days!”
24. The author got the life changing experience while ______.
A. helping carry bags for passengers B. chatting with his friend at the airport
C. waiting to meet his friend at the airport D. waiting for his plane to take off
25. While watching the man greet his family members, the author ______.

A. happy B. peaceful C. surprised D. ashamed
27. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows

Many of us spend part of each day surrounded by strangers, whether on our daily commute(上下班往返), or sitting in park or cafe. But most of them remain just that—strangers. However, new evidence has shown that plucking up(鼓起) the courage to strike up conversation might be good for our health.
Nicholas Epley from the University of Chicago and Juliana Schroeder from the University of California are behavioral(行为的) scientists. They wanted to know whether solitude is a more positive experience than interacting with strangers, or if people misunderstand the consequences of distant social connections. They found that many people feel uncomfortable and frightened talking to others and their research suggested that when we make an initial conversation, we consistently underestimate(低估) how much a new person likes us. It seems we think that all the things could go wrong and why someone wouldn’t want to talk with us.
Their research involved an experiment with a group of Chicago commuters and found that every participant in the experiment who actually tried to talk to a stranger found the person sitting next to them was happy to chat. From this and other research, the conclusion is that connecting with strangers is surprisingly pleasant and it has a positive impact on our well-being. It’s true that talking can make you feel happier and happiness can lead to better mental health.
However, if you’re an introvert(性格内向者),the thought of speaking to someone new might make you anxious. But the American research found that both extroverts(性格外向者) and introverts are happier when they are asked to behave in an extroverted manner. So maybe, if you’re a loner, it’s time to come out of your shell and make some small talk with a stranger—it could be the beginning of a new friendship.
28. What does the underlined word “solitude” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Being alone. B. Being pleasant.
C. Being calm. D. Being healthy.
29. Why might we not want to speak to a stranger
A. Because we don’t trust a new person.
B. Because we feel the stranger may dislike us.
C. Because we like distant social connections.
D. Because we can’t find a common topic.
30. What could help start a new friendship
A. Behaving in polite manner. B. Sitting next to a stranger.
C. Sharing personal details. D. Making a small talk.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. How to be an extrovert. B. Making new friends.
C. How to speak to strangers. D. Talking to strangers.

There’s no doubt that one of the greatest human achievements is the exploration of the space. Ever since astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to be sent into the orbit(轨道) around the moon in 1961, scientists have been pushing the boundaries further and further. But until now the exploration into the unknown has been dominated(主导) by men.
Of course, in the past, women were also included in the space projects and played an active role on the ground and behind the scenes. For example, they worked as seamstresses( 女裁缝师),sewing vital spaceflight components. In fact, many of NASA’s key works would never have been possible without them. Recently Hollywood produced a movie called Hidden Figures to focus on a group of American female mathematicians, especially the black women, who helped NASA send the first American into space. But this was not women’s only contribution. Back in 1963, Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to be sent into space. However, after that, space flight programs were slow to employ women. In the USA, NASA didn’t accept applications from women to become astronauts until 1978.
But attitudes have changed and leading officials at NASA say that the first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman. The space agency aims to have a sex-balanced workforce but can only achieve that if equal numbers of men and women are trained for science and technology jobs. As Allison McIntryre told the BBC, “My director is a woman. We have female astronauts. We haven’t put a woman on the moon yet. And I think that perhaps the first person to step on Mars should be a woman.”
32. What did Yuri Gagarin do in 1961
A. He landed on the moon in success. B. He discovered many new boundaries.
C. He led scientists to explore the moon. D. He made the first journey into the space.
33. Why does the author mention the film Hidden Figures
A. To show women are the true heroes of NASA’s first launch.
B. To stress that black people have won equal rights in NASA.
C. To prove women can do as well as men in NASA’s projects.
D. To present women’s contributions to NASA’s space programs.
34. What is Allison McIntryre’s attitude toward women astronauts
A. Uncaring. B. Disapproving. C. Supportive. D. Disappointed.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Will the First Person to Step on Mars Be a Woman
B. Great Achievements Have Been Made in Space Exploration
C. Why Men Played an Important Role in Exploring the Unknown
D. Men and Women Have Made Equal Contributions to NASA’s Projects

Director Wanted Students’ Union
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was a broke(身无分文的) university student. I should have been going to university on a scholarship because I came from a low-income family, but a last-minute ¥100-a-year pay rise for my mum pushed my family over the threshold(门槛)for what defined“low-income”and I was suddenly no longer qualified for ¥15,000 a year in scholarship money. This news came after I’d been accepted by the university and signed the lease(租约)for my accommodation.
Despite my family not being labelled low-income anymore. I still wouldn’t receive any financial support from my family as all the income went toward taking care of my disabled brother and paying their own bills. It would be tight, but because I had savings from my part-time job,I decided to go to university anyway. After paying my rent,I had ¥10.20 a week for everything else including food, toiletries and school supplies.
As I was in a new city, I really wanted to make friends, which was difficult when most of the social activities were expensive. Therefore, I jumped at the chance to do a relatively cheap coffee shop trip with my roommates who were pleasant to me.
I had ¥20 with me to get a cheap cup of coffee and my food shopping for a few weeks. So I headed for the coffee shop. While paying,I pulled out the note and a handful of change and realized I could pay without breaking into the note, so I put it back in my pocket. It wasn’t until I arrived at the supermarket that I realized the note was gone. What should I do?I was desperate as it was the equivalent(相等物)of two weeks of money. My roommates helped me look for the note. However, it was in vain. Finally, I went to school empty-handed.
