Can we “design” a baby like we design a handbag It may sound crazy, but a “designer baby” could be possible now. Of course, at the same time, there are both agreements and disagreements with it.
The “designer baby” idea comes from the research that allows scientists to make changes to human DNA and genes. Usually, it is done when the baby is still just an embryo (胚胎). By doing that, scientists hope that “designer babies” will less possibly be born with some certain serious illnesses.
During the 21st century, the idea became so popular that the research developed very quickly. Now, it has been firstly used to help born babies with their illnesses. One example of this is that Dr. Adrian Thrasher of University College London was able to save a 1-year-old child from leukemia (白血病) with the help of it. People learned that it was not only illnesses they could change, but also a baby’s gender and looks. A well-known event happened in 1996. An American couple, Monique and Scott Collins, decided to use this research to help them choose the gender of their next baby. They wanted to have a baby girl for they have had three sons. Moreover, people could also decide babies’ eye color, hair color and even things like height or how sportive babies will be.

When fashion designer Mindy Scheier’s middle child, Oliver, came home one day and told her he wanted to wear jeans to school rather than sweatpants (宽松运动服), she was faced with difficulty. Oliver has a rare disease, which causes him to struggle with everyday tasks, such as dressing himself. Would she tell her 8-year-old son that he couldn’t wear what everyone else got to wear, or could she figure out a way in which he could She chose the latter, change a pair of jeans for him. And with that, the Runway of Dreams Foundations was born.
Scheier started the foundation in 2014 to make adaptive clothing more accessible and fashionable for people with disabilities (残疾). As part of its purposes, Runway of Dreams Foundation partners with brands to make stylish suitable clothing lines available to the disabled, creates scholarships for students focusing on suitable clothing and helps with employment opportunities for people in the disability community.
“It is truly unbelievable how one pair of jeans has changed the world,” Scheier said. “Creating adaptive clothing for people with disabilities and trying to make change happen in the fashion industry felt so much bigger than just Oliver or just me. It felt like something that had to happen. The future of fashion is inclusion (具有包容性). We’ve been dressing different body shapes, and now it’s time to dress different abilities. I am so excited that Runway of Dreams Foundations really started a movement to make change happen.”
“They told my mother that I wasn’t going to be able to do anything for myself, but I proved them wrong. What people like me can do with a disability is the same as someone who doesn’t have one. It might look a little bit different, or a little bit strange, but it can be done. I never opened up a magazine and saw someone that looked like me. So it’s good now for disabled young kids to see a model in an ad with a disability, ” said Oliver.

A.It should focus on normal people.
B.It will lead to changes in the fashion industry.
C.It has little influences on disabled people’s life.
D.It fails to take fashion designing into consideration.
31What can we learn from Oliver’s words
A.He never reads magazines.
B.He feels ashamed of himself.
C.He dreams to become a model.
D.He appreciates suitable clothing.
D
Did you know that creating a product that fails terribly could get you featured in a museum Hundreds of failed products and inventions are getting attention and appreciation in the Museum of Failure in Hollywood.
It is the brainchild of Samuel West, a Swedish psychologist who created it to change the way people think about failure. “Failure is necessary for any kind of progress,” West said. It had a traveling exhibition in Shanghai in 2019 with over 100 “failed” products from big-name companies such as Nokia, Apple and Coca-Cola. “I really hope you see that these well-known brands that everybody respects screw up too,” West told the New York Times.
West's opinion isn't new. The famed physicist Albert Einstein once said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” This idea has even been embraced by big companies in Silicon Valley. A common slogan is “Fail fast, fail often.” “The best companies are those that encourage failure, embrace out-of-the-box thinking, and allow employees to make mistakes and see what happens,” wrote Simon Custo of Forbes.
But some people are skeptical of this so-called “culture of failure”. They are worried that if failure becomes “a badge (徽章) of honor”, it may even be seen as “uncool” when someone tries to reduce the risk of failure. This may lead to carelessness and lack of effort. “Sometimes people hide behind failure, when they could have prevented,” wrote Anna Issac of The Telegraph.
So it's important that people set apart the 2 kinds of failure: the kind that shows laziness or incompetence and the kind that takes you forward. The key is whether you've learned something from your mistakes.
32.Why did Samuel West found the Museum of Failure
A.To get himself famous all over the world.
B.To practice Albert Einstein's view on mistakes.
C.To draw people's attention to the value of failure.
D.To exhibit the failed products from big companies.
33.What does the underlined phrase “screw up” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Make a mess. B.Bring much damage.
C.Contribute little. D.Break the rules.
34.What can we learn from paragraph 4
A.Acknowledgement of failure is glorious.
B.Carelessness and laziness lead to failure.
C.Learning from mistakes is the key to progress.
D.Risk of failure should be reduced with efforts.
35.What does the author think of failure
A.Failure is a badge of honor.
B.Don't come home as a failure.
C.Face failure and find the reasons.
D.Better to fail early than to fail late.
第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Sea level, also referred to as mean(平均的) sea level is the level at which the oceans exist when averaged between high and low tides. It is calculated by measuring the level of the oceans over long periods of time and under all types of weather conditions. 36 For instance, the height of Mount Everest is considered to be 29,028 feet (8,848 meters) above sea level.
37 Other factors that cause changes include water temperature, air-pressure, seasons of the year, the presence of ice and snow, and the amount of salt in the water.
38 Therefore, sea level can vary depending on where it is being measured in the world, and it is not a constant(常数).
39 One of these is for aviation (航空) where it is often important for a pilot to be able to determine his or her height above this level at any given time. Another important function of sea level is to determine how much the sea is rising due to factors such as the melting of the polar ice caps. Mostly, it is calculated in order to determine heights of geological formations (地质建造)and land.
40 Death Valley, California, for instance, is 282 feet (85.5 meters)below sea level, and there are many other similar locations, throughout the world. The Dead Sea is the lowest of these, measuring an amazing 1,371 feet(418 meters) below sea level.
A.The measurement of mean sea level has many uses.
B.These devices measure the average height of the sea.
C.The actual level of the sea is constantly changing as tides rise and fall.
D.A change in the height of the land can also affect the measurement of the sea.
E.It is used to calculate the height or depth of any point on the Earth's land surface.
F.Several terms are used to describe the changing relationships between sea level and dry land.
G.While most of the land lies above sea level, there are still places that actually exist below it.
