Our school owned a boat named Jolie Brise. It was one of the most famous tall ships in the world and three times winner of the Fastnet Race. The boat was unusual: especially for a remote grammar school in Wiltshire, about as far away from the sea as it can get in England. Obviously, such a site didn't match its fame.
Mr Parish had originally intended to join the Royal Navy but ended up as a teacher at our school. Some pupils guessed that he still felt the call of the ocean-perhaps because his lessons were almost entirely devoted to navigation(航海). They argued that it was deeply unfair to learn about navigation but never actually go to sea. Then Mr. Parish, seeing a bunch of young people prepared to crew the boat, allowed them to sail her in return for working on the boat. And that was the beginning of the school sailing club.
By the time I arrived, the sailing club had grown. At weekends, we would work on her all day, cleaning and painting her, and collapse into sleeping bags on the floor at night. Then came the big day when a school sailing trip was announced. Its destination was Saint-Malo. But it also meant that we had to refit the ship by removing every piece of ballast(压舱物)and replacing the bilge water(底舱污水)before we were allowed to sail.
And I did learn the ropes on that school trip. I learned how to operate a ship in the high waves. I learned the meaning of teamwork and became a better team player. I also learned that the best fish is the one that you have caught and cooked yourself from a boat that you have rebuilt and sailed yourself.
24.What was unusual about the boat Jolie Brise
A.It was in a perfect condition.
B.Its lawful owner was Mr. Parish.
C.It won glory for the Royal Navy.
D.Its location wasn't as famous as it was.
25.Why was the sailing club set up
A.The crew were selected.
B.The boat needed workers.
C.Mr. Parish tried to explore the sea.
D.Students asked to practice navigation.
26.What finally made the school sailing trip possible
A.The club’s permission.
B.Mr. Parish’s sailing experience.
C.The students’ preparing the ship for it.
D.The school’s offering financial support.
27.What does the underlined phrase “learn the ropes” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Learn to cook.
B.Master useful skills.
C.Ensure sailing safety.
D.Use ropes properly.

Screens during meals rob kids of opportunities to improve language and communication skills (storytelling, making jokes, etc.), as well as to develop patience and even imagination as they entertain themselves waiting for food to arrive.
Meals are an opportunity to connect, to learn more about and enjoy each other. They strengthen the bonds that will bring benefits to the rest of our lives. We squander that opportunity when we stick a screen in front of our kids during dinner.
Of course, we all want to have enjoyable family meals, which is why I love Bruce Feiller's book "The Secrets of Happy Families", in which he devotes an entire chapter to ways to make them fun and meaningful for everyone---such as "fill in the blank" sentences you make up. Sharing something good and something challenging makes for pleasant conversations, too. And I've had fun playing Uno with my daughters until the food arrives in a restaurant.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (小儿科)also offers guidelines to help families manage children's screen time. The academy recommends avoiding digital media for children under 2, except for video-chatting, and limiting screen time to just one hour a day of high-quality programming for children ages 2 to 5.
Fundamentally, we all benefit from more human connection, not less — and that's especially true for children. Schools, airplane trips, most jobs, games, even "social" interaction were all once done without screens but now are filled with them. And while we have gained some advantages, including new connections, we have lost something fundamental, as well.
Less is always more when it comes to screens, even if they are effective at keeping kids quiet. But soon after complaining that they are "bored, ” kids have a natural tendency to fill the screenless void (空虚)with creative games, art, exploration and conversation. There are no studies that warn against having too many hours of those activities.
Let's all work harder to keep family meals special by getting rid of the iPads and nourishing our personal connections as we nourish our bodies.
28. What's the author's attitude to the kids' staring at screens during meals
A. Disapproving. B. Favorable.
C. Cautious. D. Unconcerned.
29. What does the underlined word "squander" in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Take. B. Waste.
C. Expect. D. Create.
30. What will kids do if they have no access to screens
A. Keep quiet.
B. Refuse to eat.
C. Feel bored all the time.
D. Find ways to entertain themselves.
31. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage
A. To introduce the iPads to the children.
B. To stress the importance of family meals.
C To appeal for family meals without screens.
D. To teach parents how to punish their children.

It’s at this time of the year that marathon recovery, not marathon training, starts to take center stage.
Research indicates that the muscle damage from running a marathon can last up to two weeks. The research also indicates that muscle soreness(肌肉酸痛)is not a good indicator of muscular healing. In other words, just because you aren’t sore anymore doesn’t mean that you are fully healed. This is the danger for marathon runners: post-marathon muscular soreness fades after a few days but minor damage within the muscle cells remains. If you return to full training too soon — running more and faster than the tissues are ready for — you risk delaying full recovery and the chance to get ready for your next goal.
The solution, it appears, is to recognize (and accept) that the muscles will take a while to heal and to be prepared to take it easy for the first couple of weeks (even longer if you’re particularly sore after your marathon). While the research isn’t very promising when it comes to things to do to reduce soreness and aid healing, a couple of concepts appear to help. First, providing gentle blood flow to the area helps bring healing nutrients into the muscles and also helps to remove waste products and damaged tissue. Walking and gentle massage(按摩)can help, particularly in the first few days after a marathon. Once muscle soreness has significantly reduced (usually two to four days after the race), light jogging can commence. Just be mindful to run very slowly.
No runner wants to get super fit and then lose that during the recovery process. But since you must reduce your training load following your marathon, it can be difficult as to how much and how soon to insert running into your post-marathon training.
32. When should marathon runners return to full training
A. About half a month after the competition.
B. A few days after soreness disappears.
C. Before the tissues recover completely.
D. Before the next game draws closer.
33. How can marathon runners reduce their muscle soreness
A. Through family care. B. By doing gentle exercise.
C. Through medical treatment. D. By removing damaged tissue.
34. Which of the following best explains “commence” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Fit. B. Heal. C. Start. D. Mend.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Recovery after Marathon. B. Soreness with Sports.
C. Healing Muscle Soreness. D. Reducing Training Load.

【答案】Dear Li Ming,
Thank you for your letter. I’m sorry that you have some trouble in spoken English. Here is some of my advice on how to improving spoken English.
In my opinion, you must believe in yourself. Don't lose confidence, don't be afraid of making mistakes, and don't be afraid of others' jokes. In addition, find a classmate who likes speaking English, practice together and help each other. You can try to speak actively in class. If you are wrong, the teacher will help you correct the mistakes. As long as you persist, you can improve your oral English.
As is known to us, practice makes perfect. I hope you will make great progress in your spoken English soon.
Best wishes,
Yours
Wu Tong

Text 9
M: Julia, which pop star do you like best
W: Oh, I like Shakira the most.
M: Can you tell us something about her
W: Sure. She’s a singer and a dancer too — she’s from Colombia and she sings in Spanish and English.
M: And why did you choose Shakira to talk about today
W: For quite a lot of reasons. First, I think she’s a fantastic singer. I just fell in love with her voice the first time I heard her sing. And then, she writes her own songs. Another reason I like her is because she’s a mixture of different cultures, and that makes her music interesting. Her videos are very, well you know, sexy, but I don’t think she’s really like that — she’s got four dogs and she likes working in her garden.
M: Thanks, Julia. One more question. What would you like to talk to Shakira about, if you could meet her
W: Oh, lots of things. I’d like her to teach me how to dance. She’s an incredible dancer.
Text 10
M: It’s official — July was the hottest month on Earth since scientists started recording the planet’s temperatures. Data from America’s National NASA reveal that last month, the Earth hit its hottest temperatures since records began 136 years ago. NASA spokesman Gavin Schmidt said: “July 2016 was absolutely the hottest month since the instrumental records began.” It beat the previous hottest July in 2011 by 0.11 degrees Celsius. According to NASA, July was the tenth straight month of record-breaking temperatures. It looks like the year 2016 might now become the hottest year on record.
The science website stated that July could be the hottest month since prehistoric times. Professor Jason Furtado said: “It’s a little alarming to me that we’re going through these records like nothing this year.” The news organization Climate Central reported that the record temperatures of the past few years have been caused by the burning of fossil fuels and El Ni o weather phenomenon.
