When Caster Pettway,67,was a girl, there were always quilts(被子)around. They were on the beds and sofas in her house. Sometimes, her mother would hang a quilt outside to show it off to the neighbors. She always seemed to be making a new one. “And everybody in every house did the same thing, ”Pettway says.
Pettway grew up in the 1960s in Gee’s Bend, Alabama, a tiny community on the Alabama River. Now, it is seen as the birthplace of an important art form.
Women in Gee’s Bend took up quilting sometime in the 1800s. They made quilts out of necessity: They needed them to keep warm. They didn’t have proper fabric(织物),so they cut up old clothing and sewed the pieces together. They didn’t use designs seen in traditional quilts. They cut their fabric into large, often irregular(不规则的) shapes. Their large, beautiful quilts were unlike any others in the world.
In 1998, art collector William Arnett saw a photo of a Gee's Bend quilt. He was so impressed that he visited the town and bought the quilt. He returned again and again. In 2002, Arnett showed these quilts in museums around the country. They took the art world by storm. Many experts compared the Gee’s Bend quilts to paintings by European artists. A writer for the New York Times called the quilts “some of the most wonderful works of modern art America has produced.”
Today, locals are making sure that quilting improves their lives. In February, Gee’s Bend quilters began selling their work online for the first time. Leaders are promoting(宣传)the town as a tourist town. This has encouraged the next generation(代)to carry on the tradition. Pettway says some of her young family members have taken up quilting. “And I'1l tell you what,” she says. “They’re getting pretty good.”

Jeremi Swietochowski was doing his homework when he heard a thump (重击声).A bird had flown into the window and fallen onto the balcony(阳台). Swietochowski rushed to check on it. “Just when I was about to open the door, it flew away,” he said.
Not all birds are so lucky. According to a study, between 365 million and a billion birds are killed each year in the United States by flying into glass.
“Birds, of course, don't mean to fly into buildings. It' s the reflectivity of the windows that tricks (欺骗)them,”says Christine Sheppard, director of the glass-collisions (玻璃碰撞)program at the American Bird Conservancy. “When birds see reflections of trees------ to them, they are just more trees that they can fly into.”
Sheppard and others, including environmentalists and building designers, work to make buildings bird-friendly to lower the number of bird collisions.
One method is to use less glass. Another is to cover a glass building with some kind of screen. The Orange Cube, in Lyon, France, is a good example of this method. The screen can be seen by birds, but it doesn't block natural light. A third method is to use special glass. This was done in New York City, on a huge glass building called the Javits Center. It used to be one of the city's deadliest buildings for birds.
Officials agreed to use patterned glass to take the place of some glass in 2009. Building designer Daniel Piselli worked on the project. “We need to consider what humans need and what birds need,” Piselli says. He notes that with glass, “the main thing is to put something on it that birds can see, so they are not tricked by reflections and people can still enjoy daylight through the glass.”
Work on the Javits Center project was completed in 2014. “We ended up bringing down collisions by more than 90%,” Piselli says.
43. Why did the author think the bird was lucky
A. It wasn' t hurt by an enemy. B. It could fly freely in the sky.
C. It received good care from its owner. D. It wasn' t killed after hitting the window.
44. Why do birds fly into buildings according to Christine Sheppard
A. They need to stop to have a rest. B. They want to play tricks on humans.
C. They’re trying to get inside the buildings. D. They’re confused by reflections in the window.
45. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Reasons for making friends with birds. B. Ways to make buildings safer for birds.
C. The disadvantages of glass windows. D. Great examples of new high buildings.
46. How did the Javits Center project turn out
A. It was very successful. B. It was unacceptable to bird lovers.
C. It took longer to complete than expected. D. It played a big role in stopping air pollution.

Experts believe the basis of the German language, Proto-Germanic, began to develop about 2000 BCE, as people began to live in western areas of the Baltic Sea. One of the first ever records of the German language dates back to the 1st century BCE when the Romans came across people from the Rhine-Danube area.
The modern German we know today is likely to be unrecognizable from the language that the Romans first experienced. It has gone through many changes, from Old High German (from about 700 CE to the eleventh century), Middle High German (from about 1050 to 1350), Early New High German (1350 to 1600) to New High German (from about 1600 to the present) .
As with many languages, German has developed along with society and sociopolitical factors(社会政治因素)have helped shape the language into what it is today .New words from other languages have been adopted(采纳)by German speakers. Others have been introduced into the German language because of more communications with foreigners either because of migration, trade ,war, or the development of new technology from cinema to the Internet. For example, today Germans will have “brainstorming sessions"-------using the English term. Similarly, most speakers have adopted English words related to technology like the Internet or email, as it happens in several other languages.
German is an interesting language because of the dominance(优势)of dialects(方言),which appeared because of the fact that there was no cultural centre, like Paris in France. By the end of the Middle Ages action was taken to create a “Standard German language", so that people from different areas could communicate more easily with each other. A major influence on the standardization of German was Martin Luther's German translation of an influential book in 1522. That "style" was largely based on the language used at the Saxon court. This became the basis of what we know as German today.
47. When do experts think German started to develop first
A. In the 1st century BCE. B. About 2000 BCE. C. About 1350. D. In 700 CE.
48.The author lists the example in paragraph 3 to________.
A. stress that learning the German language is helpful
B. prove that the German language has a long history
C. explain why the German language is difficult to learn
D. show that many factors have helped shape the language
49. What did Martin Luther do
A. He helped set the basis of German today. B. He did a lot of research on German dialects.
C. He wrote a book in both German and English. D. He shaped German with the help of the French.
50. What is this text mainly about
A. A brief history of the German language.
B .How the German language spread worldwide.
C. The influence of technology on the German language.
D. How the German language influenced other languages.

Dear Simon,
I have received your letter about asking me for advice on learning English. Now I’d like to tell you how you should learn English.
First of all, you should often read English aloud and learn something important by heart, which hopes you to remember them easily and form a good habit of thinking in English. In addition, you should listen a lot and communicate with others in English. In this way, you will improve your listening ability and your spoken English as well. What’s more, you had better keep a diary in English every day and your written English will become better and better.
I hope what I’ve said is useful to you. I’m looking forward to your good news.
Best wishes.
Yours truly,
Mary
