“Alexa, what’s 5 minus 3 ” A 6-year-old boy recently asked that question in a video, which was popular on Twitter. Alexa, Amazon’s voice-started assistant, delivered a quick answer: 2.
It’s cute, but it raises a question that’s been on the minds of many parents and educators lately: How do virtual assistants like Alexa affect children’s learning experiences
Clint Hill, an English teacher, says in his classrooms he often sees “children quietly talking into their phones and asking Google or other services to spell some complicated words that they don’t know.” But Hill says he doesn’t mind. “I struggle with spelling, and spellcheck on my word processing has been a lifesaver for me.” he says. “I think being able to use those technological aids is not hurting anybody,” Hill adds.
But some experts say it’s not just about learning basic math or spelling. “One of the best gifts we can give our children is doing that kind of problem-solving together,” says Diane Levin, a professor of applied human development. Levin says it’s important for children to learn to struggle-even just a little-with challenges. “They will use those skills that they’re learning for all kinds of things that come along,” Levin says.
How much concern should parents have over Alexa and their children Every new wave of technology, from calculators to TV sets, causes a panic about its effect on children, and nostalgia (怀旧) for the past, says Dimitri Christakis, an expert in child health, behavior and development.
But he says that a child watching television is having completely passive experience. Because new technology is interactive, “it helps understand how the world works,” Christakis says. “But while watching television, you play no role in the content,” Christakis says.
Still, he agrees that this debate is about much more than knowing what 5 minus 3 is. It’s also about developing the patience to solve problems. “That ability to stay focused, “he says, “is one of the most important developmental skills that children acquire.”
24. What can be inferred from Hill’s words
A. Technological aids are helpful. B. His students don’t use their brains.
C. His students aren’t focused in class. D. Spelling is really difficult for small children.
25. What can we learn about technological aids in Levin’s opinion
A. They fail to solve problems. B. They give children challenges.
C. They present a threat to teachers at school.
D. They are harmful to children’s development.
26. Which of the following would Christakis agree with
A. New technology affects children most. B. New technology tends to cause worries.
C. Television has been a thing of the past.
D. Today’s parents are too concerned.
27. What does Christakis stress about children in the last paragraph
A. Their ability to interact with others. B. Their ability to learn from the past.
C. Their ability to study technology. D. Their ability to pay attention.

From the loss of wildlife to rising sea levels, we’re all well aware of the problems that climate change could cause.
But while it may seem like such issues won’t affect most of us directly, it looks like future generations could grow up without something that many of us now take for granted: chocolate.
According to an essay published by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, changes to the climate in the regions that produce cacao--the plant from which chocolate is produced--may mean that it will soon become extinct.
Most of the world’s cacao grows in countries close to the equator (赤道), with over half of it growing in the African nations of Ghana and Ivory Coast. It’s predicted that by 2050, climate change will have accelerated the rate at which temperatures in these countries rise, making it extremely difficult for cacao to grow there.
The problem doesn’t lie in increased heat, however, but in lower humidity(湿度), as it’s believed that rainfall will stay at the same level if the temperature rises.
“In other words, as higher temperatures squeeze more water out of soil and plants, it’s unlikely that rainfall will increase enough to offset the moisture (水分) loss, “ Michon Scott, the essay’s author, wrote.
To help fight this problem, researchers from Berkeley University in the US are working on changing the DNA of cacao plants to allow them to survive in dryer conditions by using gene editing technology, according to US News. In the meantime, US company Mars, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of chocolate products, announced in January that it would spend $1 billion (6. 33 billion yuan) to help reduce the effects of climate change.
“This is a world issue, and it requires everyone to work together,” Mars spokesperson Barry Parkin told Business Insider.
The message here is that if we all do our part, we may be able to prevent some of the worst impacts of climate change. Or if we’re unlucky, chocolate will become a thing of the past.
28. What could make it hard for cacao to grow around the equator in the future
A. the higher temperatures there B. the higher humidity there
C. the increase in rainfall there D. the moisture loss in the soil there
29. What did Barry Parkin suggest
A. thousand-mile journey begins with the first step. B. Always prepare for a rainy day.
C. United we stand; divided we fall. D. Wish for the best; prepare for the worst.
30. What can we learn from the passage
A. UC Berkeley is trying to find a substitute for cacao.
B. Cacao can only be found in most African countries.
C. Climate changes can be controlled if we are lucky.
D. Mars will financially support the fight against climate changes.
31. What may be the best title of this text
A. Chocolate could become history B. Work together to fight climate change
C. How do we grow cacao in the future D. The history of chocolate.

Slowly but surely, we’re moving closer and closer to 5G world. From smart-home security to self-driving cars, all the internet-connected devices in your life will be able to talk to each other at lightning-fast speeds with reduced delay. Objectively speaking, the fastest 4G download speeds in the U. S. top out at an average of 19. 42 Mbps. But by comparison 5G promises gigabit (千兆) speeds.
“5G is one of those signs, along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age,” said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. “The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It’s pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, but also connected infrastructure construction. There’s lots of data behind that task, which is why we need high speed.
Augmented reality glasses and virtual headset haven’t yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist -- or perhaps even replace--smartphones.
Ericsson stated at February’s Mobile World Congress how smart glasses could become faster and lighter with a 5G connection, because instead of being weighed down with components, the glasses could rely on hardware for processing power.
But don’t get too excited. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the meantime, including various trials to make sure the radios play nicely with hardware and infrastructure (基础建设)construction so 5G isn’t concentrated only in big cities.
32. What does the author want to stress in Paragraph 1
A. The lighting-fast speed of 5G. B. The expectation of 5G world.
C. The difference between 4G and 5G. D. The internet-connected devices in our life.
33. What does the underlined word “emblem” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. exhibition. B. success. C. symbol. D. explanation.
34. We can infer from the text that
A. 5G world won’t come without AR glasses
B. 5G helps to create the artificial intelligence vehicle
C. Apple company is developing AR glasses worldwide
D. Tech companies will face the fact that smartphones may be replaced
35. What will the author probably tell us next
A. How to fully expand 5G coverage.
B. Smart glasses will become faster and lighter.
C. Why 5G isn’t concentrated in big cities.
D. The importance of infrastructure construction.

Participating in high school extra-curricular activities is important for personal growth. They can teach you a lot, introduce you to good friends, and give you ideas about what to do in future. 36 .
The most important thing to consider before taking part in extra-curricular activity is: what do you like to do 37 Once you' ve made a list of interests, it's time to search for opportunities. Usually, your teachers and parents know more about what is going on in your community than you do. 38 And never underestimate the power of a simple online search!

You need to go to school, do your homework, and maybe even work a part time job. 39 However, time is not something too difficult to get. You have to make the time to do extra-curricular activities if you really want to get involved. You can sit down and make your schedule hour by hour and take an honest look at what you do with your free time. 40
Whether you give up one Saturday every month to volunteer or one hour every week to attend club meetings, you are making the time to make a difference and prepare for your future.
A. They won’t mind helping you out a little bit.
B. You’ll find a world of opportunities waiting for you.
C. You might be surprised by how much free time you "find. "
D. You don't need to travel far to find extra-curricular activities.
E. You feel there's not enough time to participate in extra-curricular activities.
F. So if you' re a high school student wondering where to get started, look no further.
E. If you’re going to spend hours every week doing something, you need to enjoy it.

It was a lazy Sunday morning, the type of day that getting out of bed requires an effort. When Marilyn and I entered the kitchen, Lori was already at the table doing her homework. Seeing us coming, she suddenly stood and faced me. “Why are there more pictures of Lisa than there are of me ” she asked. Lisa is our older daughter.
I stared back, not understanding the question. Lori turned and left the room. Caught off-guard by the question, I looked at Marilyn “Are there more pictures of Lisa than of Lori “Marilyn shrugged and raised her eyebrows in a motion of puzzlement. “Are you aware that there are more pictures of Lisa than Lori ” I added.
Marilyn said, “I’ve never counted them. I don’t know.”
Marilyn’s answer was the same as my thoughts, “I hadn’t realized that there was any significant difference. Now why would Lori ask such a question ” I asked.
Marilyn just shook her head and stared back at me. After a few minutes of thought she said, “When Lisa was born, you were taking photographs. You hardly went anywhere without a camera. When Lori was born, you were involved in colored slides (幻灯片). There must be hundreds of slides of Lori somewhere in the house that Lori has never seen or doesn’t remember.
After digesting Marilyn’s remarks, I agreed. “After Lori leaves, we’ll look for those slides. Who knows, we may find more slides of Lori than pictures of Lisa, I joked.
Later that afternoon, when we were alone, we went into the basement where we had stored the boxes that we had brought from our previous home. It wasn’t long before we discovered the trays of slides, and for the rest of the afternoon we looked at each tray, pointing out those slides that highlighted Lori.
“What are you going to do ” Marilyn asked.
“It’s her birthday in a few weeks, I said, “We’ll select about one hundred slides with Lori and convert them into pictures, put them into an album and give to her as a gift. I don’t know if the album will answer her question, but at least she’ll know that we care enough to find her an answer.”

Paragraph 1:
Over the next few days, we secretly went through all of our slides.___________________ ________________________________________________________________________

Over the next few days, we secretly went through all of our slides. We kept on selecting and rejecting pictures until we were satisfied. Those pictures brought back memories of the early years of our marriage and we hoped they showed how we felt about our daughter. Marilyn had them converted into photographs. Then, we placed them into an album with a birthday card explaining why her mother and I had put the album together. When the album was finally finished, we hid the book until her birthday.
On her birthday morning, before leaving for work, I opened her door and slipped the album inside. Then I left the house and drove to work. I was about to enter the office when the telephone rang. I picked up the receiver, and on the other end of the phone, a tiny voice spoke, “I love you, Daddy,” she said and hung up,the call disconnected. The receiver remained against my ear for a few more minutes before I placed it back on the phone. Our message of love had been delivered and acknowledged.

M: Turn up the television. I can't hear the movie.
W: I can't turn it up any louder.
M: What are they doing up there, anyway This has been going on all day.

W: I helped my brother move the week before. Maybe I hurt myself, lifting a sofa or a box. I think I would have felt the pain earlier, though.
M: It is probably how you got hurt. I'll schedule some tests before you go, but it is important that you take it easy until we know what happened. You should also stop in the drugstore and buy some mild pain medication. I'll refer you to a movement doctor as well. He will show you some movements to reduce your pain.
W: That would be great. I need to get back to work as soon as possible.
M: It says here on the sheet that you are a ski instructor. I don't recommend that you continue difficult activities like skiing until we know what is wrong.
W: Yes, I have been teaching ski lessons part time during the winter. I always need extra money for the holidays. My normal job is in an office though, so I have plenty of rest there. It's very boring.
Text 10
Hello everybody. My name is David Anderson. I’m glad to be invited by the International Student Centre to give you a talk on how to protect yourselves and avoid losses, both on and off campus. First, if you, especially the girls, are in a café or restaurant, make sure that your bag is where you can keep an eye on it. If you want to leave for a while, don’t ask a stranger to take care of it. Just take it with you. Second, if you drive, park in a public car park, or at least in a well-lighted area if it’s at night. Avoid the quiet dark roads, and don’t leave your passport, laptop, or cash in the car. Third, if you have to walk home alone late at night, stick to well-lighted areas. If you really think someone is going to hurt you, go to the nearest house and ask for help. If a car stops to ask for information, just keep well clear of the door. At last, I just want to say that in this country, it is not allowed to carry a knife, or anything that can be used as a weapon, even if it’s for self-defense. Actually, this isn’t a dangerous town if you’re careful enough.
