英国伦敦西南100多千米的索巨石阵,又称索尔兹伯里石环、环状列石、太阳神庙、史前石桌、斯通亨治石栏、斯托肯立石圈等名,是欧洲著名的史前时代文化神庙遗址,位于英格兰威尔特郡索尔兹伯里平原,约建于公元前4000~2000年(2008年3月至4月,英国考古学家研究发现,巨石阵的比较准确的建造年代在公元前2300年左右)的索尔兹伯里平原上,一些巍峨巨石呈环形屹立在绿色的旷野间,这就是英伦三岛最著名、最神秘的史前遗迹—巨石阵。
从现在看来,巨石阵的建筑规模和工程难度对于早期人类来说,简直是不可思议的。它的建成比埃及最古老的金字塔还要早700年,然而究竟是谁建造了这雄伟的巨石阵,现在仍然众说纷纭。有人认为是当地早期居民凯尔特人建造的墓穴;也有人认为是古罗马人为天神希拉建造的圣殿;还有人认为是丹麦人建造用来举行祭典的地方。然而这些虚无缥缈的想象都没有确凿的证据。无数学者经年累月地找寻着巨石阵的建造者。学者们感叹巨石阵与埃及金字塔一样的神秘莫测。
