In the United States 84 colleges now accept just women. Most of them were established in the 19th century; they were designed to offer women the education they could not receive anywhere else.At that time major universities and colleges accepted only men.In the past 20 years many young women have chosen to study at colleges that accept both men and women. As a result some women's colleges decided to accept men students too.Others, however, refused to change.
Now these schools are popular again. The president of Trinity College in Washington D.C., said that by the end of the 1980s, women began to recognize that studying at the same school with men did not mean women were having an equal chance to learn. The president of Smith College in Massachusetts says a women's college permits women to choose classes and activities freely. For example, she says that in women's college a higher percentage of students study mathematics than in a college with both men and women.Educational experts say men students in the United States usually speak in class more than women students do.In a women's college, women feel freer to say what they think.Women's schools also bring out leadership capabilities in many women.Women are represented everywhere. For example, at a women's college every evening, office is held by a woman.Recent studies reportedly show that American women who went to Women's colleges are more likely to hold successful jobs later in life.

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary (暂时的).This is the most common type.It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular situation—for example, a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place.Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe.Unlike the se cond type, chronic (长期的) loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause.People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others.Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.
Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person's social contacts, e.g.friends, family members, co workers, etc.We depend on various people for different guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their own popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, chronic loneliness can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

Do you remember the big flood (洪水) in 1998 Our country suffered a lot and some people lost their lives in that flood. There are many floods here and there each year in our country. In summer it rains a lot, the rain water runs everywhere because there are not enough reservoirs to hold water and the drainage (排水系统) is bad.In cities, streets flood.Water goes into houses, shops, factories and schools. In the country, fields are filled with water. Some houses fall down because they are badly made.In a word, people and property (财产) are in great danger when the flood comes.
We met the biggest flood in 1998 in the latest one hundred years. Many villages, towns and cities were flooded.A large number of soldiers were sent to help stop flood from spilling out of the banks of big rivers. They carried many bags of sand onto the banks and even stood in the water to stop the water when they were short of bags. They were also busy saving people trapped in the water.Sometimes they faced danger, but they were brave enough to put the interest (利益) of the people before everything, including their own lives.Several soldiers lost their young lives during the fighting against the flood.
The cause for the flood is that more trees have been cut down, and earth is washed away by the rainwater. Some people do not realize the importance of keeping the balance of water and earth. When it rains heavily, much rainwater cannot be kept.Something must be done to stop such things from happening.

As goods and services improved, people were persuaded to spend their money on changing from old to new, and found the change worth the expense. When an airline equipped itself with jets, for example, its costs (and therefore air fare) would go up, but the new planes meant such an improvement that the higher cost was justified.A new car (or wireless, washing machine, electric kettle) made life so much more comfortable than the old one that the high cost of replacement was fully repaid.Manufacturers still cry their goods as persuasively as ever, but are the improvements really worth paying for?In many fields, things have now reached such a high standard of performance that further progress is very limited and very, very expensive.Airlines, for example, go to enormous expense in buying the latest prestige jets, in which vast research costs have been spent on relatively small improvements. If we abandon these vast costs we might lose the chance of cutting minutes away from flying times; but wouldn't it be better to see airfares drop dramatically, as capital costs become relatively insignificant Again, in the context of a 70 m.p.h.Limit, with lines of cars traveling so close as to control each other's speeds, improvements in performance are actually irrelevant; improvements in handling are unnecessary, as most production cars grip (抓牢) the road perfectly, and comfort has now reached a very high level.Small improvements here are unlikely to be worth the thousands that anybody replacing an ordinary family car every two years may have spent on them.Let us instead have cars—or wireless, electric kettles, washing machines, television sets—which are made to last, and not to be replaced.Significant progress is obviously a good thing, but the insignificant progression from model change to model change is not.
41.The author is obviously challenging the social norm (社会规范) that ________.

What makes a true friend
Friendship is what we all long for and value most. For us students, in particular, it is most important as we are developing mentally, physically, and psychologically. But first, we have to answer this question: what makes a true friend Here is some of my understanding.
First, a friend shares similar interests and tastes with you. With him, you spend most of your time enjoying the hours after class and school. You go to cinemas, amusement parks, shopping centers, and many other places together, just like body and shadow.Second, a friend should be able to help you with your school lessons.By making friends with those top students of the class, you are following good examples and making you way in the right direction.Never make friends with someone if he is poorer than you in study as he is of no use to you.Worse still, keeping company with him will put shame on you.
Third, a friend should accept you just the way you are.He will accept the pleasant and less pleasant aspects of your character and never find fault with you.You always feel comfortable with him as he always gives you the confidence you need to know for sure what you are.
Fourth, a friend should be true to each other.Never tell bad things about your friend to others and do keep his secrets between you.Even he has done something wrong, you should never tell on him to his parents and teachers, otherwise, he will get hurt and hate you for the rest of his life.

The Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906 ranks as the greatest disaster in the history of San Francisco.More than four and a half square miles of San Francisco burned into a desert of desolation (荒芜).Nearly 200,000 people out of 450,000 were left homeless. The Southern Pacific and Santa Fe Railroads immediately opened their gates so all who chose could ride away from the scenes of desolation.Over 100,000 people were processed out of the Oakland offices alone.
Because of government and financial interests of the time, the official San Francisco death toll (死亡人数) has always been very small. The official count in 1907 was only 478.It was thought that a high death toll would hamper (妨碍) the rebuilding and repopulation of the city.
For many years I did extensive research on the 1906 earthquake using the dates of death between April 18, 1906 and May 19, 1906.I learned from Dr Donald Cheu of the Governor's Earthquake Task Force that an earthquake death was described as “...an immediate death resulting from an earthquake or an earthquake caused injury or illness that becomes deadly within a period of one year following the earthquake”.I realized hundreds had been left out.
Now I am looking to you for help.My team and I are setting out to collect an exact account of those affected by the 1906 earthquake which we will conserve in our museum. This time we are looking for information on anyone who was there at the time.It doesn't matter if they rebuild, left on the first boat or train. All of their stories are important.

Art is something that almost everyone can create.Pencil art is a free hand art with simple strokes (笔画) that give an elegant and unusual look.Any person can draw pencil art.It is an untruth that only an artist can draw.Creativity is more than enough to draw a work of art.Very different effects can be created in pencil art.
Drawing pencils are available with different types of leads, such as 4H, 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, 4B etc.The 4H pencil is the lightest lead pencil and produces light and thin lines, while 4B is the darkest lead pencil and produces dark and thick lines.Very unique effects can be created with these pencils.
Strokes are one of the most important factors in pencil art.The pressure that is applied on the lines or curves or arc or circle or triangle or freehand drawing will decide the strength of stroke. It will add to the liveliness and to the depth of the art.Apart from stroke, blending and shading (描影) is one more factor in pencil art.A number of methods can be used to make changes of shape and color (within black and white) very easily.Even human fingers can be used. The popular method is using tissue paper for soft blend and salt paper for hard to make texture (质地) blend.
Take a flower as an example, the 2B pencil is used to draw the outline of the flower while the HB pencil is used to draw simple line strokes inside the flower. The centre circle can be improved by the use of the 2B, HB and H pencils with pale finger blend.

A blind man who won 1 million yuan in a TV competition has set up a training company in Shenzhen to help other blind people use computers.
His invention, a computer program to help other unable to see to “read” on the screen, won him the cash reward from CCTV.
Wang Yongde, 43, came to Shenzhen in 2006 with the prize and help from Shenzhen's association for the blind. He runs a website which trains the blind how to use computers. The website has just been launched after months of preparation.
“I am blind so I know what the blind most need,” said Wang, who lost his sight at the age of seven. He said he is confident that the website will be a success and help thousands of blind people in Shenzhen.
When he was young, Wang depended on listening to the radio to stay connected to the world, as there was no special school for the blind in his hometown.
With no professional computer training, Wang had to rely on his family to read him computer books on how to operate a computer. He mastered all the necessary computer skills and started programming little by little.
“It was not an easy job.Programming is boring, and I sat in front of a computer for at least 12 hours a day,” said Wang. After two years' hard work, he finished his screen reading program for the blind in 1999.

When Steve Maxwell graduated from college, he had an engineering degree and a high tech job—but he couldn't balance his checkbook.“I took one finance class in college but dropped it to go on a ski trip,” says the 45 year old father of three, who lives in Windsor, Colorado.“I actually had to go to my bank and ask them to teach me how to read my statement (结算单).”
One of the biggest obstacles to making money is not understanding it: thousands of us avoid investing because we just don't get it.But to make money, you must be financially literate.“It bothered me that I didn't understand this stuff,” says Steve, “so I read books and magazines about money management and investing, and I asked every financial whiz (高手) I knew to explain things to me.”
He and his wife started applying the lessons: they made a point to live_below_their_means.They never bought on impulse, always negotiated better deals (on their cars, cable bills, furniture) and stayed in their home long after they could afford a more expensive one. They also put 20 percent of their annual salary into investments.
Within ten years, they were millionaires, and people were coming to Steve for advice.“Someone would say, ‘I need to refinance my house—what should I do?’ A lot of times, I wouldn't know the answer, but I'd go to find it and learn something in the process,” he says.
In 2003, Steve quit his job to become part owner of a company that holds personal finance seminars for employees of corporations like Wal Mart.he also started going to real estate investment seminars, and it's paid off: he now owns $30 million worth of investment properties, including apartment complexes, a shopping mall and a quarry.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。

Learning is a great activity. It expands your viewpoints. It gives you new knowledge that you can use to improve your life.Even if you discount these practical benefits, the act of learning can be a source of enjoyment.
But in a world full of activities, it can often be hard to fit in time to learn anything that isn't essential. The only things learned are those that need to be.Everything beyond that is considered an amusement.Even people who do appreciate the practice of lifelong learning can find it difficult to make the effort.
Here are some tips for people to get into the habit of lifelong learning.
First, always have a book.It doesn't matter if it takes you a year or a week to read a book.Always try to have a book that you are reading through, and take it with you so you can read it when you have time.Just by sparing a few minutes in my day I can read about a book per week. That's at least fifty each year.
Second, keep a list of things that you need to learn. We all have lists of things that we are about to do.These are the tasks we need to complete.Try to also have a list that you need to learn. On it you can write ideas for new areas of study.Maybe you would like to take up a new language, learn a skill or read the works of Shakespeare.Whatever motivates you, write it down.
Third, put it into practice.Skill based learning is useless if it isn't applied.Studying painting isn't the same as picking up a brush. If your knowledge can be applied, put it into practice.
Finally, find jobs that encourage learning. You should choose a career that encourages continual learning. If you are in a job that doesn't have much intellectual freedom, consider changing to one that does.Don't spend forty hours of your week in a job that doesn't challenge you.
Probably these tips are helpful to many people.

In the US, the highest degree that a student can earn is a doctorate. Some doctorates are professional degrees, as opposed to a degree based on researches.Medical students, for example, receive an MD, from the Latin “medicine doctors”.Future lawyers receive a JD, for “jurum” doctor, meaning a doctor of law.
Someone with a PhD is “a doctor of philosophy”.Many people earn a PhD, yet not many are philosophers. The name has survived since the Middle Ages when many areas of study were called philosophy.Students can receive a PhD in engineering, social work, education, music, history and a lot of other areas.Requirements can differ from one university to another and from one area of study to another. But the National Science Foundation says American doctoral education is organized around a research experience.
A PhD usually requires at least three years of full time study after a bachelor's degree (学士学位).Some people first get a master's degree, and others do not.Students who apply for a PhD must also pass special exa minations and carry out original research.Students present their findings by writing a dissertation (专题论文), a long paper that they have to defend before a group of experts.Every year, the federal government collects information on research doctorates awarded in the United States.More than 43,000 students received a research doctorate in 2005, the most recent year reported.
Close to one third of those doctorates went to foreign students in the United States on a temporary visa. The largest numbers came from China, South Korea, India and Canada. Most of them studied engineering, physical science or life science. The University of Illinois awarded the largest number of doctorates to foreign students. The other universities in the top five were Purdue, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Pennsylvania State.

Between the innocence of babyhood and the seriousness of manhood we find a delightful creature called a “boy”.Boys come in different sizes, weights, and colors, but all boys have the same belief: to enjoy every second of every minute of every hour of every day and to fill the air with noise until the adult males pack them off to bed at night.
Boys are found everywhere—on top of, under, inside of, climbing on, swinging from, running around, or jumping to.Mothers spoil them, little girls hate them, older sisters and brothers love them, and God protects them.A boy is TRUTH with dirt on its face, BEAUTY with a cut on its finger, WISDOM with chocolate in its hair, and the HOPE of the future with a snake in its pocket.
When you are busy, a boy is a trouble maker and a noise. When you want him to make a good impression, his brain turns to jelly or else he becomes a wild creature bent on destroying the world and himself with it.
A boy is a mixture—he has the stomach of a horse, the digestion of stones and sand, the energy of an atomic bomb, the curiosity of a cat, the imagination of a superman, the shyness of a sweet girl, the brave nature of a bull, the violence of a firecracker, but when you ask him to make something, he_has_five_thumbs_on_each_hand.
He likes ice cream, knives, saws, Christmas, comic books, woods, water (in its natural habitat), large animals, Dad, trains, Saturday mornings, and fire engines. He is not much for Sunday schools, company, schools, books without pictures, music lessons, neckties, barbers, girls, overcoats, adults, or bedtime.
Nobody else is so early to rise, or so late to supper.Nobody else gets so much fun out of trees, dogs, and breezes.Nobody else can put into one pocket a rusty knife, a half eaten apple, a three feet rope, six cents and some unknown things.
A boy is a magical creature—he is your headache but when you come home at night with only destroyed pieces of your hopes and dreams, he can mend them like new with two magic words, “Hi, Dad!”

Can you believe your eyes A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age.
Martin Doherty, a psychologist at the University of Sterling in Scotland, led the team of scientists. In this experiment, Doherty and his team tested the perception (观察力) of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10, and the second group included 24 adults aged 18 to 25.
The first group of pictures showed two circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identify the larger one.Four year olds identified the correct circle 79% of the time.Adults identified the correct circle 95% of the time.
Next, both groups were shown a picture where the orange circles, again of different sizes, were surrounded by gray circles. Here's where the trick lies in.In some of the pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller gray circles—making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which was the real larger one.And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger gray circles—so it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle.
When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they weren't fooled—they were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy as before.Older children and adults, on the other hand, did not do as well.Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one, and adults got it wrong most of the time.
As children get older, Doherty said, their brains may develop the ability to identify visual context. In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once: the tricky gray circles, as well as the orange circle in the middle. As a result, they're more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick.
41.Doherty and his team of scientists did an experiment to evaluate ________.

C.children's and adults' brains

B.only adults over 18 got it right 95% of the time with gray ones around
C.children at 4 got it right about 79% of the time with gray ones around
D.adults got it right most of the time with gray ones around
43.According to the passage, we can know that ________.
A.a smaller orange circle appears bigger on a white background

C.a circle surrounded by other circles looks bigger than its real size
D.a circle surrounded by bigger ones looks smaller than its real size
44.Visual context may work when children get older than ________.

The generation gap between students and teachers is becoming more significant with only 3.3% out of a survey group of 1,000 students from 30 key middle schools in the city saying they would be willing to tell their teachers of their inner thoughts.
In today's educational environment, teachers are positioned to be the authority figure for learning instead of also becoming good friends in the life of students.
As only students with good marks in exams are considered the “apples in the eyes” of the teachers, most students think their teachers to be partial (偏心).
“I feel sad to hear such remarks,” said Yu Yi, a well known special class teacher.
She recalled that in the past, teachers and students would play basketball together or comment on the novels while sitting on the grass during a break. But today, study and good marks are the only topics of conversation between students and teachers.
“Schools are not only the place where knowledge is imparted (传授) but also where students are taught how to be an upright person,” Yu said.“The success of a person is not merely determined by intelligence but also by em
