With fewer and fewer people using cash, Non-cash payments are becoming
increasingly popular, especially in China. People make their payments with cards, mobile
phones and other electronic devices. Obviously, there are many benefits of non-cash
payments. First, they are so convenient and fast that people could make almost all the
payments with a single click on their smartphones. Second, non-cash payments are safe
and clean.
However, as the old saying goes, every coin has two sides. The problems that
accompany non-cash payments should not be ignored. When thinking it further, non-cash
payments is easier for your personal information to be stolen, which may bring great
trouble. Meanwhile, to some degree, non-cash payments encourage over-consumption. Last
but not least, non-cash payments aren't quite friendly with people not knowing how,
especially the elderly.
Nonetheless, non-cash payments are increasingly part of our fast-growing modern
society. In my opinion, perhaps it is more convenient for everyone-young and old, men and
women-to have various options, in both cash and non-cash forms, when it comes to making
payments, for the better.

“I really want to, but I can’t because…” It hurts every time I hear someone say it. I see it for what it is—an excuse. Every one of us has hopes, dreams and goals. We talk about how we will achieve them, but when it’s time to do them, we use that sentence.
During my teen years, I felt stuck. I wanted to learn so many things and achieve my wildest dreams, yet I couldn’t. Living in an underdeveloped country, we suffer from a lack of water, electricity, security and opportunities. And, we don’t have training courses, libraries or clubs, and the Internet is slower than a snail crawling through peanut butter.
One day, I had had enough. I decided to use the resources I had to create the future I dreamed of. I set my mind on getting the Japanese Monbusho Scholarship. I found articles and books online to become fluent in Japanese. In a few months, I was able to hold a simple conversation in Japanese.
I realized that I would need money. I set out to build a hedgehog (刺猬) care website. Every day, after school, I would research hedgehogs and write detailed articles about them. I studied Japanese and wrote about hedgehogs for three years.
I’m sure you’re expecting a spirit-lifting ending where I travel to Japan and live off my website. That’s not how this story ends. The fact is, I didn’t even get the chance to apply for the scholarship. I failed. Unwilling to accept the facts, I started an online university the next year. And the hedgehog website made me a total of $60.
I can tell you that I tried, but it didn’t work out. It did—just not the way I expected. I’m not in Japan, but I know how to speak Japanese and have met many interesting people along the way. My hedgehog website didn’t succeed, but I created a new one that’s even better with the experience I gained. I didn’t let my difficulties stand in my way, and I created my own opportunities. Anyone can embrace the cards they’ve been dealt and create their own way to make them into a winning hand.

For many years, scientists and animal lovers have worked to make the world safer for endangered species. Now, there is something that needs protection from these protected animals—a famous French cheese called Roquefort, known as the “King of Cheeses”.
Roquefort is made from sheep’s milk in the southern part of the French mountains. Farmers have been making Roquefort for thousands of years, and they follow many rules when making it, to be sure that it is done in the traditional way. One of the rules is that they must let their sheep live freely in the mountains.
However, following these rules has become very dangerous. Wolves have moved into the area, and they have killed 62 sheep. The wolves are an endangered species, and have not been seen in the French mountains since the 1920s. No one is allowed to kill the wolves, but the farmers are now saying it is impossible for their sheep to live in the same mountains as the wolves. Farmers have dogs to protect the sheep and have also built electric fences, but they say they will not have enough money to continue making Roquefort once they have spent it all on keeping their sheep safe. Many people have said that wolves that attack sheep should be killed, since they have become a threat to the farmers’ jobs. Others think that anyone who wants the wolves killed is trying to make them become extinct.
Maybe it would not be a problem if Roquefort became extinct instead, and the wolves were able to live in the mountains. But then the farmers would not have jobs. Will the people of Southern France be able to find a way that protects both the wolves and the King of Cheeses Let’s wait and see.

It’s become accepted that exposure to blue light—the type produced by electronic device’s screens is bad for sleep. Researchers have understood that your body is controlled by its circadian rhythms (生理时钟), which are a set of repeated physical, mental, and behavioral changes. The clearest circadian rhythm is the one that makes you tired at night and watchful during the day. This process is directed by melatonin, a chemical produced by your body when it’s dark outside. Nighttime light exposure can put this process into disorder, stopping melatonin production and keeping you awake longer. Many studies have suggested blue light is and especially powerful melatonin suppressant (抑制剂).
That thinking about blue light has led to inventions meant to stop the like “night mode” settings on your iPads or phones and glasses that people believe decrease blue light.
But a paper by a group of researchers at the University of Manchester in the U.K. printed in Current Biology challenges that belief. After exposing mice to lights that were different in color but of the same brightness and watching their following activity, the team said that yellow light actually seems to stop sleeping more than blue. Warm light, they believed, could make the body think it’s daytime, while cooler blue light more closely copies evening.
Animal studies should be accepted with a certain degree of care, as they often do not translate directly to human behavior, says Dr. Cathy Goldstein. She is a sleep expert at Michigan Medicine. Though mice are frequently used in sleep research, Goldstein notes since they are active at night, they may behave differently to light than humans do.
Goldstein agrees research on how light from electronics influences sleep hasn’t been conclusive. But she says there’s no reason not to use night mode on electronics. Just remember to turn down the brightness, she says.

A. You’ll feel sleepy. B. You’ll feel unhappy.
C. You’ll want to get up. D. You’ll want more food.

B. Blue light does very little harm to your health.

Aesha Ash spent most of her life ballet dancing and even turned it into a career as a member of the New York City Ballet. As much as she loved to dance, she found the weight of her obligation heavy because she was often the only African American ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) in her classes and company.
After retiring from ballet in 2007. Aesha enjoyed the quiet life for about ten years before she decided to come back to ballet, but in a completely new way. She started The Swan Dreams Project that helps kids in poor areas get into the world of ballet. Aesha set up a one-week camp that invited kids to not only learn the basics of ballet, but also get an introduction to French (since she says it is “the language of ballet”).
Her first camp was in 2018 in a poor neighborhood in New York. When she arrived, she was greeted by dozens of students, most of whom were African Americans. She wanted to help kids who otherwise might not have ever had the chance to live in the world of ballet.
On the final day of camp, after a week of learning, the students put on a final performance for their family and friends. Before the performance, Aesha said she was nervous that it would be less of a performance and more of a mess, since the campers were all between 8 and 11 years old. Much to her surprise, it turned out to be perfect. She said. “When we went out to our first circle and the kids began counting in French and performing the steps they had just learned, my heart melted.”
Aesha continues to do whatever she can to help kids learn ballet. She found a way to turn that seemingly unbearable weight she once carried around into something good for kids, as well as for the world of ballet.
