阅读理解。
第一节
A
A few years before my fiftieth birthday, I went on a road trip with one of my best friends from high school. We’d taken many similar trips during our teens and twenties, but as we started raising young children, we didn’t have much time for getaways.
But on this occasion, our kids were old enough to fend for themselves, and we hit the road. We spent the next few hours talking, laughing, listening to music, singing, and generally feeling like carefree teenagers again.
At some point along the way, we had to stop for gas and snacks and pulled into a gas station. We went inside the store and as we walked back out to the car, I caught a glimpse(瞥见) of a middle-aged woman in the mirrored glass windows of the store.
She was laughing and talking with another woman, and for just a moment I thought, “Who is that woman Doesn’t she know how ridiculous she looks ” I realised immediately the woman was me. For just that moment, I found myself an outsider, and the judgment came down hard and fast.
Even though I was feeling young and beautiful and carefree on the inside, my own distorted(扭曲的) self-awareness around aging and appearance quickly brought me back to the reality of who I was on the outside and how I was supposed to behave.
Somewhere inside of me I believed middle-aged women didn’t sing and laugh and act silly. That was reserved for the young and beautiful.
What if we started a beauty revolution What if true beauty were defined(定义) by who we are rather than how we look My own internal(内心的) revolution began one summer day in the gas station. I was feeling young and happy, and I almost allowed my self-judgment to steal the joy from the day. But truthfully, I was beautiful that day.

Recently, my husband and three kids were playing in the Mediterranean(地中海), swimming and floating in the picture-perfect sea. It was ridiculously beautiful in Majorca, Spain. The way the sun danced across the water and how the blue horizon was dotted with storybook sailboats were such beautiful scenes.
My husband and I always dreamed about taking our kids on a trip around the world. It was one of the things we talked at length about, when we imagined our life with the children we hoped we would have.
Fourteen years later, we had three boys who were growing up faster by the day. It was time to make good on those plans. We renewed our passports, and then packed our bags. We showed our kids the world. It was about experiencing the dozens of flights, trains and taxis together. We showed them how wonderful, how diverse, and how fascinating the world is. We wanted them to learn all that we had learned ourselves, through our own travels.
But there was something more than that: What we really wanted is to slow down time. We wanted the days to last a bit longer, and the weeks to take their time. The years with our children are going too fast. We wanted to put the brakes on our busy lives for a year, and just be with our kids. We wanted a break from the daily morning routine of making lunches, eating breakfast and rushing out of the door in time for school. We needed a family time out.
It was a wonderful two months in Europe, full of incredible moments. When we look back at our lives, I know we’ll be glad we did it. I know we’ll be happy that this is a chapter of the story of our family.

The first people in Canada crossed the Bering Strait from Asia. In the north the Inuit lived by hunting seals, walruses(海象) and whales. They also hunted caribou(北美驯鹿). On the west coast people hunted deer, bears and beavers(河狸). They also fished. On the plains people lived by hunting buffalo. In the east people grew crops of beans, squash(南瓜), maize(玉米) and sunflower seeds.
The first Europeans to reach Canada were the Vikings. In 986 a Viking called Bjarni Herjolfsson was blown off course by a storm and he spotted a new land. However, he sailed away without landing. In 1001 a man named Leif Eriksson landed in the new land, which he named Vinland (it was part of Canada). However, Eriksson did not stay permanently. Later the Vikings did establish a colony(殖民地) in North America but they abandoned it because of conflict with the natives.
However, after the Vikings Canada was forgotten until the end of the 15th century. In 1497 the English king Henry Ⅶ sent an Italian named John Cabot on an expedition across the Atlantic to Newfoundland. Cabot discovered rich fishing waters off the coast of Canada.
Then in 1534 and in 1535-1536 a Frenchman named Jacques Cartier sailed on two expeditions to Canada. On 10 August 1535 (St Lawrence’s Day) he sailed into the St Lawrence River, which he named after the saint.
However, no permanent European settlements were made in Canada until the early 17th century. In 1603 a Frenchman named Samuel de Champlain sailed up the St Lawrence River. In 1604 he founded Port Royal in Acadia (Nova Scotia). In 1608 Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec. (The name Quebec is believed to be an Algonquin word meaning a narrow part of a river). In 1642 the French founded Montreal. The new colony in Canada was called New France. By 1685 the population of New France was about 10,000. By 1740 it was 48,000.

It was last weekend when my kids and I flew to Texas for my daughter’s trampoline(蹦床)competition, plus a couple of side trips. We would tour the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. We would visit Waco’s Magnolia Market. We would play outdoor mini golf in January.
We would have nothing to complain about! We would be leaving behind school and work for a hotel pool and having wall-to-wall fun!
And yet—we found things to complain about. The pool was bigger in that other hotel! Why do you get to shower first They call this coffee
Luckily I remembered to take my imaginary coat of armour(盔甲) with me. I’ve learned to put it on as soon as we arrive somewhere as no complaint can get through it. They simply bounce off it and land harmlessly at my feet. I shrug(耸肩). I smile.
For three days, real fun was had, silly complaints were ignored, and more real fun was had, until it was time to return the car, get on a plane, and fly home.
Except our flight was cancelled. And so was the flight after that. And once that airline resumed(恢复) flying, there would be no room on any of its flights for another 21 hours.
We spent the next couple of hours securing seats for the next evening, tracking down our already-checked bags, and finding a hotel room. We hit the hotel pool before bed. We swam well into the night, my kids making up songs and singing and jumping and laughing.
And that was when it hit me that family travel is a lot more than I thought before. It’s discovering that things don’t have to go right to go well. It’s remembering that joy and memories are where you make them, not where you find them. My kids made them at the tail end of a very long day, in a tiny pool near a Texas airport. So I did too.

Last year my wife and I spent a most interesting month in Turkey. Before we left, we were reminded of the difficulties of driving in Turkey. We certainly did not find this to be the case and, except for a few places in faraway mountain areas, the roads were wide, and well-paved(铺设). We drove for 12 days along the western coast of Turkey and had no problems at all. We found the Turkish drivers to be very polite and well educated. We also found that eating lunch in the smaller towns was difficult, so we picnicked almost every day.
The following day after our arrival was Turkey’s Children’s Day, started by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Ataturk loved children and he often said, “Children are a new beginning of tomorrow.” He even dedicated(奉献) the day 23rd of April to the children which is celebrated as Children’s Day.
On that day certain children are picked to take over the places of the government, and a lucky kid will be the President of Turkey for a whole day. Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. The distance from east to west is over 5,500 kilometres and the country covers six of the world’s 24 time zones. However, its population, about 37 million, is only about one-fourth of Russia’s. Nearly 90% of Canadians live within 200 km of the border with the United States, which means that Canada contains vast expanses(宽阔的区域) of wilderness to the north.Canada’s native peoples make up less than two percent of the population.
Canada has one third of the world’s supply of fresh water. There are five great lakes in the south, and there are many others, especially in the north. Most of the electricity is produced by water. The country has a great deal of coal, oil and natural gas, and these are all exploited(开发) for energy.
Much of the country is covered by forests, and wood is cut and sold all over the world. Canada is also the world’s biggest producer of the kind of paper that is used for newspapers. Fishing is also very important for Canadians. Fish from the east and west coasts are sold to many other countries.
