Every morning, millions of people in China do Tai Chi. It is popular with women and men. Tai Chi is a good kind of exercise for old people. It is good for the body and the mind. It is healthy and relaxing. Tai Chi is from China. It is hundreds of years old. Tai Chi is a “soft” martial art (武术). That means it is slow and calm.
There are also “hard” martial arts. Shaolin Kung Fu, for example, which has a history of over 1,500 years, is a “hard” martial art. It is fast and dangerous. You have to be very fit and strong to do “hard” martial arts.
In Beijing, Master Li Yu is teaching Shaolin Kung Fu to thirty young students, three of whom come from abroad. “Shaolin Kung Fu is difficult,” said Li Yu. “You must practise every move many times.”

Jack loved playing sports. But on a day in August, it seemed that all sports were about to be taken away from him. Though injuries were nothing new for Jack, this one was much more serious. He would miss both the football and wrestling seasons. “I had to experience a long and painful recovery,” said Jack.
Curtis Urbina, a famous coach, admired Jack’s drive to keep going on the wrestling mat. After Jack got injured, he had an idea when sensing his sadness. He decided to bring Jack to practices to help him out.
Curtis Urbina asked Jack to watch how he and the other coaches worked with wrestlers(摔跤手). As expected, Jack wanted to take part in wrestling instead of being kept indoors all day. He offered to coach the toughest kids. He was a natural coach. He kept the kids interested and made it fun for them. He showed patience and persistence(坚韧不拔) needed to deal with those kids. “Making sure that they stayed in the room as required was the biggest part of my job,” Jack said. “But I wanted to teach others some of the same lessons that wrestling had taught me.”
One kid Jack coached was Stephen Singlak, aged 4. Stephen’s parents were amazed when they watched Jack work with their son. “You can guess how Stephen felt at first as he was often wrestling with kids bigger than him,” said Stephen’s dad. “But Jack started going one-on-one with him. Jack would be on all fours, and Stephen was trying different moves. Stephen started liking wrestling instead of getting discouraged.”
After struggling to win even one match early on, Stephen won about half of his matches in this season. “It was a great feeling when I knew I had played a part in Stephen getting to where he was,” Jack said. “That coaching experience was just wonderful. I’m glad that I have a chance to help others.”

Everyone loves to jump into the cool water of a swimming pool to beat the summer heat. Swimming is also one of the best ways to relax after a long week at work and even seen as a wonderful way to exercise. Swimming can help us lose weight. It is also believed to make the body strong. However, do you know anything about the history of swimming
The earlier recording of swimming dates back to 7,000 years ago. The Stone Age painting clearly showed that swimming was practised at that time. What’s more, many historical books gave written records of swimming. Swimming became popular in the Middle Ages.
In the 1800s, many swimming associations(协会) were set up. These associations organised swimming competitions. In fact, there have been records of swimming clubs which were set up in countries like the US, England, France and Germany during that time. England is believed to be the first modern society to consider swimming as a sport. The National Swimming Society in England organised swimming competitions that were held in London’s six pools. Mathew Webb’s swim across the English Channel further increased the sport’s popularity. Later in 1886, a new association, the Amateur Swimming Association of Great Britain, was set up, which made swimming even more popular.
As swimming became popular during the 1800s, swimming appeared in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. During this time, the Olympic Games were a sports festival for men with the 100 m and 1,500 m freestyle swimming held in open water. There were only four swimming events. Three of them were freestyle.
The developer of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre De Coubertin believed that women were not brawny enough to take part in such a competitive sport, which requires a lot of physical power. It was only in the 1912 Olympic Games that women swimmers appeared.

You can’t imagine how terrible I felt at that time. A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realised running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

In January 2012, I weighed 300 pounds. I struggled to fit into restaurant chairs and school desks, and couldn’t take my favourite amusement park ride because the seat belt wouldn’t buckle(扣住). I was sad. I needed to change my lifestyle—not for anyone else, but for myself and my health.
First, I decided to control my diet. So I often went to school without breakfast. Over time, I became thinner, but I felt tired and had no strength. Even I fell asleep in class and fell behind my friends. I had to make changes. Then, I worked out every morning and visited a gym regularly. Soon, I realised these workouts were useless if I was going to eat junk and fast food all the time. So I began focusing on eating lean protein, vegetables and fruit.

Now, my whole life is 100 percent different: energetic, confident, active in sports. Now I’m feeling good about myself. Besides, I’m inspiring others by posting about my success on social media.

Recently, I was asked to go to my students’ cross-country(越野赛) meet. At first, I did not know if I should go because honestly, I am not the biggest sports fan of any kind. However, I would never regret going there after I watched it.
Although many people don’t consider cross-country a sport, I disagree. Cross-country beginners have to work out and exercise just like you do for any other sport. They run for hours and miles. In fact, many sports consider running as their punishment for bad behaviour(行为), but I wonder what the coach would do to punish a cross-country beginner.
Honestly, I never knew how much fun I would have watching many kids run for fun. They kept running no matter how tired they were. The public would not only just cheer for the runners they know but also cheer for all runners, fast and slow. When the students heard you cheering them on, or even just clapping(鼓掌) to encourage them, they would start sprinting and try their best to cross the finish line.
My students did a wonderful job and I took many pictures of them. When they found that someone from their school came to see them, they were very excited. Cross-country is actually pretty great and I definitely want to support cross-country later in my teaching career. What I will do next is to go to the meets with my students.
