It’s been five years since I came to America. The year before I arrived, every weekend I was woken up by “Spring River in the Flower Moon Night (春江花月夜)”, 1 by my mother on a zheng(筝).
My mom was crazy about the beauty of Chinese traditional music, 2 she never had the chance to learn an instrument. In 2009, she got a zheng from a friend and has been playing and performing ever since. Sometimes when I 3 her, I search for the songs she used to play on the Internet. I never expected to hear them here in Boston.
Earlier this year, as I 4 a new flat, I met Zhantao Lin, the director of the Boston Chinese Musicians Association. At Lin’s house, I heard the 5 of the erhu. Lin later introduced me to his music team and I heard the rehearse (排练) for a 6 this year. It was beautiful and powerful—it suddenly brought me back to my hometown in China.
7 is also part of Lin’s daily work. Besides performing, he passed on his love of the erhu to his 8 . I went to one of Lin’s classes and met 9-year-old London Turk. I asked him 9 he chose to learn the erhu. “It’s much 10 to learn than the violin,” he said. So we just try our best to let him have a 12 to explore it,” she said.
I 13 my mom for giving me a chance to lose myself in the Chinese musical world. The music makes me feel relaxed. It can also 14 me of my homesickness. If you listen to one piece, you will 15 its uniqueness(独特性), power, and beauty.

How nice are you Do you give money to homeless people Do you offer your seat to someone in need on a bus
Many people believe that confident people think more highly of themselves, while those who have low self-esteem (自尊) think less of their good qualities. However, a new study says it might not be true, reported The Guardian.
The study was done by Jonathan Freeman, a psychology professor from the University of London, UK. He found that 98 percent of British people consider themselves to be among the nicest 50 percent of the population. In the study, Freeman first asked some people to rate (评级) their own niceness. Then he got people to answer questions like “Do you give directions to strangers ” and “Have you ever donated blood ”. The results showed that people are not as nice as they think they are. Two thirds of them seldom helped others carry heavy shopping bags, and only a quarter of them donated blood.
In another study by psychologists from universities in Chicago and Virginia, US, some people were shown pictures of themselves. Some pictures had been more or less changed to make them appear more attractive(有吸引力的). When asked to pick the unchanged pictures, people usually chose the more attractive ones.
So, why do we think we’re nicer than we actually are There are many theories (理论). A popular one says we unknowingly(无意中) cheat(欺骗) ourselves, so that we can get confidence without knowingly lying to ourselves or each other.
How can we solve it Other studies show that there is a simple way: feedback (反馈). Compare others’ opinion toward yourself with your own and you will see a clearer picture.
1. Where does the passage most probably come from
A. A story book. B. A grammar book. C. A dictionary. D. A magazine.
2. Which of the following about Freeman’s study is NOT true
A. People are not as nice as they think they are.
B. Most of British people think they are nice people.
C. Confident people have more good qualities.
D. The people answered some questions about niceness.
3. According to Para 5, people chose the more attractive pictures of themselves because ________.
A. they wanted themselves to look good
B. they lied to themselves without knowing it
C. it was hard to tell small differences D. they were not happy with their looks
4. What does the story mainly talk about
A. Others’ opinions toward you. B. How to be a nicer person.
C. How to know ourselves well. D. People’s opinion of their own niceness.

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees can communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation---their young trees
Suzanne Simard, forest ecologist(生态学家) at the University of British Columbia, explains how trees are much more complex(复杂的) than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin(达尔文) thought that trees are competing(竞争) for survival of the fittest, Simard and her team have made a new discovery and showed just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their group work and support, passing around necessary nutrition(营养) such as nitrogen(氮) and carbon "depending on who needs it".
Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks. This makes sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it influences all.
Simard talks about "Mother trees". These are usually the largest, oldest plants on which all other trees depend. These "Mother trees" are connected to all the other trees in the forest by this network of fungi, and may manage the resources of the whole trees and plants in the forest. She explains how these trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important resources to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down "Mother trees" without paying attention to these highly complex "tree societies" of the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances to save the whole forest.
"We didn't take any notice of it," Simard says sadly. "Mother trees” move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance." If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.
1.The underlined sentence "the opposite is true" in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees .
A.compete for survival B. protect their own wealth
C.depend on each other D. provide support for dying trees
2."Mother trees" are very important because they .
A.look the largest in size in the forest B. pass on nutrition to young trees
C.bring more wealth to humans D. know more about the "tree societies"
3. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refers to(指代) .
A.how "tree societies" work B. how trees grow old
C.how forestry industry develops D. how young trees survive
4. We can learn from the passage that _________.
A.trees aren’t as complex as we think.
B.Charles Darwin had the same opinion as Simard
C.if “Mother trees” are cut down, they won’t make difference to young trees.
D. trees can share resources with other ones by the underground fungi networks.

五.任务型阅读
The way we spend our time can be divided into three “bottles”. These are the necessary tasks bottle, the voluntary(自愿的)tasks bottle and the happiness bottle.
Every day, we spend time filling the necessary tasks bottle with useful things, like making money, doing housework, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another bottle with voluntary tasks. These are things that we do for others, but we may not enjoy them. This bottle gets filled with tasks like taking children to activities, cooking family meals, and doing laundry. Those bottles are very important. If we don’t fill them each day, our family won’t run properly.
However, we often forget to fill the third bottle ---- the happiness bottle that we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your happiness bottle sometimes empty at the end of the day Between doing all the necessary and voluntary tasks, time flies by, and before we know it, it is time for bed. We all have days like that.
This is why each day we have to make an effort to fill our happiness bottle. I fill mine by going to the dancing class. And I always leave classes more happily than when I enter. This week, I had the pleasure of taking part in a guitar practice in my neighborhood. We show our musical talent and practice music for charity. It was a time of fun, friendship and music-making. At the end of the evening, my happiness bottle was filled to top.
Will your activities bring joy to your life Or are the other two tasks eating up all your time Try to find ways to achieve a balance between how you fill your three bottles. At the end of the day, hopefully we’ve done all we can to make sure that our happiness bottle is filled.
Three groups of the____1___ we spend our time
The necessary task jar The necessary tasks jar is ____2___of useful things, like making money, doing housework, buying food and____3_____ bills.
The__4__task jar We fill the jar with voluntary tasks such as __5___ children to activities and cooking meals for our___6___.
The happiness jar This is the jar that we fill with activities that bring us__7__. Between doing all the necessary and voluntary tasks, time flies by on some days, and before we know it, it is time to__8__ to bed.
Conclusion Do your best to find ways to ___9___a balance. At the end of the day, it is___10__for us to make sure that our happiness jar is filled.
