(2021·长沙高二检测)
Rodney Smith is a man with a task. The Bermuda native is in the midst of a trip that will take him to every state in the nation, mowing lawns(修理草坪).
Five years ago, Smith came across a senior man mowing his lawn and stopped to help. “When I came across the elderly man, my life changed, ”he said. After that, Smith went on to create the Raising Men Lawn Care Service (RMLCS) to mow lawns for the elderly, disabled, single moms and former soldiers free of charge. As part of providing free yard work, the organization teaches children about serving their communities and lawn mower safety.
A key component of RMLCS is its 50-yard challenge, which sets a goal for children nationwide to mow 50 lawns for free in their community. When a kid signs up for the challenge, the group sends him or her a white shirt with the Raising Men logo(标识), shades and ear protection. The participants receive a different colored shirt after every 10th lawn they mow. When they have completed the task for 50 yards, they receive a special visit from Smith or someone from RMLCS. They give the volunteer a new lawnmower, free of charge, and cut other lawns with them.
Since this challenge started in 2016, 12 kids have already completed the challenge. And both boys and girls are part of it. At present they have 130 kids nationwide taking part in this challenge, including 7 in Bermuda and the U. K. and one in Canada. So it is spreading worldwide. Even the Queen of England took notice — the governor of Bermuda presented Smith with an award last year on behalf of her.
It was also last year that Smith came up with the 50 States 50 Lawns campaign. Now, in 2018, he’s on the road again.

Role models are powerful. No matter what stage of life you’re at, it’s good to have someone who encourages you to be the best version of yourself. Recent winners of national commendations mean we have a wider range of possible role models.
As part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), President Xi signed a presidential decree (主席令) on Sept. 17 to award 42 people the Medal of the Republic, the Friendship Medal and national honorary titles, China Daily reported. Recipients come from various backgrounds, including scientists, lawmakers, educators, artists, model workers and six non-Chinese individuals. All have made big contributions to the nation’s construction and development.
Chinese scientist Tu Youyou is one of the eight who were awarded the Medal of the Republic. She has saved millions of lives worldwide. She has also made important scientific innovation in traditional Chinese medicine.
“It is my dream that Chinese medicine will help us conquer life-threatening diseases worldwide and that people across the globe will enjoy its benefits, ” Tu once wrote in the science journal Nature Medicine.
Tu is not the only one who has given her life to the country’s development. Nan Rendong, before his death in 2017, led the research and development of China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope, the world’s largest radio telescope. He worked on the project for more than 20 years. The facility he designed helps humans search for extraterrestrial civilizations (地外文明) and marked a Chinese technological milestone. My husband, BJ, and I knew our cat, Willow, was beautiful, but we didn’t realize she had attracted a friend until the day there was an orange cat sitting on our patio(露台)staring in. He just sat there and was satisfied to watch Willow walking in the house and playing with us.
Day after day, he was there. Then one day, BJ and I decided that it was time to have a talk with the orange gentleman. He opened the patio door and the cat walked into the house naturally as if he knew we allowed him to get in. Then he played with Willow in the house. Both of them had a happy time.
How could he wait patiently on our patio for such a long time We were surprised by his courage and patience. Every day, the cat would show up, spend the day with us, and then meow(猫咪咪叫)by the door to be let out at night. We had a responsibility to help him open the door and let him go—after all, he wasn’t our cat. He was nobody’s cat as far as we could tell. He had no collar(颈圈)or tag. I didn’t remember how long we had waited before we admitted to ourselves that he was our cat. Then we bought him a collar, tagged him as Buster and added our phone number and address. However, a few days later, we received a call from our neighbor. We weren’t at home so she left a message.
“Hi, Darling. I think you have my daughter’s cat. Call me when you get this message. ”
I was very surprised when I heard the message. I didn’t even know that her daughter had a cat. I only saw her walk dogs before. BJ and I were very upset.

When I called her back, the story of the cat was so funny that I forgot how upset I was. Buster had been adopted as a pet by our neighbor’s daughter, but the cat had to stay in the girl’s bedroom because she had dogs. During the day, he was let out to walk around the neighborhood, and this was when he would come to our home to be with Willow, eat her food, play with her toys and please her mommy and daddy. Then he would leave us, go back home and spend the night with his mommy.
The next day, the neighbor’s young daughter came over to collect her cat. I forced a smile as I watched Buster being carried away. He had brought so much joy to our family. But about half an hour later, the young girl called and asked if she could come over. She brought her cat back and bravely stated that she felt Buster would be happier with us because he could have the run of the house without fear of being hurt by dogs. I was so happy, and I told her that she could come by to see Buster anytime.

“If mum finds out that I’m going to the beach, I’ll be in big trouble. ” I said to myself softly in a low voice.
I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk casually into the kitchen. As I was walking towards the back door, mum asked without looking up from her “dish-washing”. “Where are you going ” I answered back without hesitation, “ I am going to the garden to play. ” After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed a sign of relief. My plan had worked out fine so far. I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started running towards the bus stop at top speed. After half an hour I was at the beach scanning the crowd for my friends, Jimmy and Bobby. Two young men were racing in the canoes(独木舟). After a while, I saw them near a coconut tree. I ran towards them and got into my swimming trunk (游泳裤). For about an hour, we played volleyball happily.
Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore. I wanted to show off my swimming skills so I declared to help get the ball for them.
I dived into the water and started swimming at a steady pace. After swimming for about ten minutes, I became tired but when I saw that the ball was only a few feet away from me, I put in an extra burst of speed. However, just as I was going to get the ball, a very strong current swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, a string of weed (海草)tangled (缠绕) up with my feet and I could not swim properly.
I struggled to keep afloat but it was no use. “ If I had listened to my parents, this would never have happened, ” I thought silently.

【答案】
Finally, after struggling for a minute or two, I still got pulled underwater. I told myself I should never give up. Then I pulled the weed again with great efforts. The weed finally broke. I swam back to the surface to take a deep breath. I saw two young men in canoes, racing each other. I was exhausted and shouted for help. The two men saw me and raced towards me. By the time they reached me, I had been already unconscious.
When I woke up, I was in an empty room lying on a bed. It was not until a doctor came into the room that I realized that I was in a hospital. Jimmy and Bobby told me the two young men brought me to the shore and sent me to the hospital. After a few minutes, my parents with half angry and half worried faces walked in. My parents scolded me for running out of the house secretly but were also glad that I was not seriously injured. I will never forget that terrifying experience. Neither will I ever want to show off again.

Finally, after struggling for a minute or two, I still got pulled underwater.
