There is an old Chinese saying, “An inch of time is worth an inch of gold(一寸光阴一寸金).” Why did ancient Chinese use “inch” to describe time
Time is intangible(无形的)--we cannot touch or see it, and cannot measure it the way we measure length or width.
But a special clock in ancient China made it possible to measure time. According to historical records, Chinese people used sundials(日晷)to measure time for thousands of years before the first mechanical(机械的) clock was made. The sundial is made up of a plate and a stick(晷针).When the sun is in the sky, the stick casts (投射) a shadow (影子) onto the plate. As the sun moves across the sky, the length of the shadow changes. People can tell time by looking at the shadow. In the morning and later in the afternoon, the shadow is longer. People measured the length of the shadow by the inch. That’s why they used inches when talking about time as well.
