Material analysis
This class is the first period of Topic 1, Unit 4. The main activities are 1a and 2. Through the model rocket talked by Kangkang and Jane in 1a, students will learn the grammar which is the passive voice in the simple past tense. At the same time, students can know much about the rocket by focusing on the important sentence patterns, such as “What is it used for ” “It’s used for ...” . In 1b, by listening to 1a, students’ listening skills will be improved. In 1c, students can answer 4 questions to make themselves know 1a better. Students will do some practice in 2, which can help to do better in the sentence patterns “be made of, be made from and be used for”.
Teaching aims and demands 1. Knowledge objects
After this class, Ss will be able to:
1). learn to use some new words and expressions: rocket, metal, satellite, lock.
2). learn the following sentences:
①It’s bad for your health if you spend too much time on them.
②--What is it made of -- It’s made of metal.
③--What is it used for -- It’s used for sending satellites or spaceships into space. ④ I hope your dream will come true.
3). learn the grammar: the passive voice in the simple past tense. 4). know a lot about the invention and inventor.
2. Ability objects
After the class:
1). Ss can have a conversation with each other about inventions like the rocket in English. 2). They can improve their listening and speaking ability and know some related strategies. 3). They can design their own works by drawing the picture:invention inventor works.

1). Ss’ attitude towards thinking and exploring actively will be formed. 2). Their team spirit and the quality of sharing will be developed.

Q1: What is it Q2: What is it made of/ from ② Guide the students to find out the differences between “be made of” and “be made from” ③ Offer some time to students to make up conversations (sweater/ wine) according to the example. 3.Invention: time ①Present Hu Jinteng’s model camera and show the sentence : Hu Jinteng often makes model. Let students change the sentence into the one using the passive voice in the simple present tense.ask students to describe the time of the invention. Q1: When did he made the model camera ②Then ask Hu Jinteng ,“When did you made it ” to show the other sentence: He made a model camera in 2018. Encourage them to say the synonymous sentences by using the passive voice in the simple past tense. ③Show the table about the model camera and lead students to say out the sentences with the passive voice in the simple past tense.Get students to conclude the structure: was/were done. ④Guess riddles: What is it Ask some students to describe the cards according to the key information, and others guess. Teach the new word: satellite. Invention: material, time, country and usage. 4.Show the picture of Kangkang and Jane, and guide students to guess what they are talking about. 1. Ss enjoy the short video to know about some folk inventions and recall the sentence patterns. --What is it used for --It’s used for doing sth. 2. Look at the pictures and know about the sentence patterns. --What is it made of/ from --It is made of/ from. 3. Master the different uses of “be made of” and “be made from” (由..制成) 4. Work with partners to make up conversations according to the example. 5.Look at the model camera made by Hu Jinteng and say the sentences with the passive voice in the simple present tense and the simple past tense. 6.Say out the sentences according to the table about the model camera. 7. Guess riddles. 3 students go to the front to describe the information and others guess what they are. 8.Look at the picture and guess what Kangkang and Jane talking about. 1. Arouse Ss’ interest about inventions and get to know good thinking is helpful to inventing and recall the sentence patterns of usage. 2. Make students know the sentence patterns of describing the material by showing the pictures and setting questions. 3.Attract students’ attention and curiosity by showing one student’s homemade camera. Lead to the Grammar: the passive voice in the simple past tense, as well as consolidate the use of expressing the object’s material, usage and time. 3. Play a guessing game to arouse students’ interest. 4.Teach the listening strategies
While-listening 1.First reading. Listen and ask a question:What are Jane and Kangkang talking about 2. Second reading. Listen again and mark T(True) or F (False). 3. Third reading. Listen for the last time and fill in the table. 4. Ask students to read the questions in 1c and try best to complete them 1. Look at the question and listen for the first time. Then answer the question. 2.Read the sentences and listen again to mark T or F. 3.Read the table and listen for the third time to fill in the blanks. 4. Read the questions in 1c and try their best to complete them. 1.Train Ss’ listening and speaking ability . 2.Learn 1a carefully based on the key points learned before and develop the habit of thinking independently.
Post-reading 1. Lead students to learn the key points in 1a while answering the questions in 1c. 2. Get students to read 1a together. 3. Project 1. Show the picture of Kangkang’s invention: Plar (plane-car). Guide students to discuss with partners and introduce it to the whole class. 4. Invention: works Encourage students to design their invention. Draw a picture of it and introduce it to the whole class. 1. Discuss with their partners to practice introducing Kangkang’s invention to the whole class. 2. Work with group members to draw a picture of their own invention and show it to others. 1.
