I was checking out at the supermarket counter on Wednesday night, ready to pay for my bananas, when all of a sudden, fear came upon me. My wallet was gone. And I could only have left it one place: the G9 bus, from which I had gotten off minutes earlier and which was now speeding to some stops. The moment of realizing it was gone was followed by mental math. How much time and money would it cost to replace the credit cards, the driver’s license, and the expensive lipstick ($ 55!).
Two hours after I was back at my house, I heard a knock on the door. My husband answered while I sat in the dining room on the phone with a credit card company. “Does Jennifer live here ” I heard someone say. In her hand was my wallet, without a penny missing. She left before I could offer my gratitude to her.
After I posted the story, I heard from her boyfriend, who identified the good citizen as Erin Ball, a 26-year-old girl working for a trade organization.
Once I figured out her, I called to thank her. She said she spotted my wallet and thought that it’s more dangerous to go to a stranger’s house than leaving the wallet with the driver, but she still decided to take the chance. “If I were in that situation, I would want someone to try to find me,” she said. Ball doesn’t find her actions particularly excellent. She added, “It’s not hard to do small things for people.”
After Ball found my wallet, she decided to post a picture of my driver’s license online before going to my house, trying to see if anyone knew me. No sooner had she left my doorstep than I got emails from two neighbors who recognized my face, both offering to help me find my missing property.
Ball found my house on a bitterly cold night, for which I was extremely grateful. Looking back, I’m not surprised someone had wanted to help a stranger. A warm current of honesty and harmony is running through this town.

Too much screen time for kids can lead to poor health, the American Heart Association (AHA) says. A scientific statement published by the AHA in the medical journal Circulation said screen time from smartphones, tablet computers and other devices can lead kids to a sedentary (惯于久坐不动的) lifestyle, increasing the possibility that they grow up as overweight or obese (肥胖的).
The AHA is the latest organization urging parents to limit how much time their kids spend in front of screens. It recommends children get one to two hours of screen time each day. Although television viewing among children and teens has dropped, the use of smartphones and tablet computers has surged.
“Although the mechanisms (机制) linking screen time to obesity are not entirely clear, there are real concerns that screens influence eating behaviors, mainly because children don’t notice when they are full when eating in front of a screen,” said Tracie Barnett, a researcher at the INRS- Institut Armand-Frappier Research Centre, in a statement.
Barnett, one of the authors of the statement, also urges parents to keep screens out of kids’ bedrooms, raising the fear that too much screen time can affect sleep.
Many studies have warned about the potential (潜在的) negative effects of too much screen time. Last year, a study from researcher sat San Diego State University (SDSU) found nearly half of teens who spent five or more hours in front of screens every day experienced long periods of hopelessness or sadness.
Apple, who makes the iOS mobile platform, plans to introduce new tools to devices to help users cut back on screen time. As for iOS 12, iPhones will include a screen time feature where users can control and review how they spend time on their mobile devices. Another company that makes the Android platform will introduce “digital well-being” tools such as screen time limits and a “wind down” option to encourage users to put down their phones before bed.
28. Which can replace the underlined word “surged” in paragraph 2
A. Increased suddenly. B. Decreased slowly.
C. Stayed the same. D. Lost the balance.
29. How do screens influence children’s eating behavior
A. By changing the time they eat.
B. By changing their taste for food.
C. By influencing how fast they eat.
D. By influencing their feeling of fullness.
30. What effect did too much screen time have in SDSU’s study
A. It affected children’s sleep. B. It led to children’s obesity.
C. It resulted in diet problems. D. It negatively influenced moods.
31. What will Apple do to deal with the screen time problem
A. Reduce its products’ battery life.
B. Provide a screen time feature.
C. Introduce “digital well-being” tools.
D. Add a “wind down” option to its products.

Las Vegas city in Nevada is built in a desert. The city may be known to the outside world for its partying. But officials have found that there are 21 square kilometers of useless grass. The grass is never laid on, played on or even stepped on. The grass is only there to look nice.
Now, the city is asking the Nevada state legislature (立法机构) to ban useless grass. It is trying to become the first place in America to ban that kind of grass often seen between streets, in housing developments and in office parks.
It is estimated that useless grass makes up 40% of all the grass in Las Vegas and it needs a lot of water to survive. Grass needs four times more water than dry climate plants like cactus. By tearing out the grass, the city could reduce yearly water usage by 15%.
In 2003, the Southern Nevada Water Authority banned developers from planting grass in front of new homes. It also offered homeowners $30 for each square meter of grass they tear out. But fewer people are now using the program. Water usage has increased in southern Nevada by 9% since 2019. And last year, Las Vegas set a record of 240 days without major rainfall. The Colorado River provides much of Nevada’s drinking water. The river could lose more water as climate change affects it.
Water officials in other dry cities said water usage needs to be reduced. But they fear the reaction to reforms like the ones in Las Vegas if their communities do not accept them. Cynthia Campbell is the water resources adviser for the city of Phoenix in Arizona. “There might come a point when city restrictions get too severe (苛刻的) for some residents (居民). They’ll say that is the point of no return for them,” Campbell said. “For some people, it’s a pool. For some people, it’s grass.”
32. Why does Las Vegas city try to ban useless grass
A. To protect the local people. B. To beautify the city.
C. To reduce water usage. D. To reduce waste.
33. What program was carried out in Las Vegas in 2003
A. Allowing planting grass before new houses.
B. Encouraging the residents to tear out grass.
C. Praising those who signed on the program.
D. Awarding those who reduced water usage.
34. What is implied in Campbell’s words in the last paragraph
A. Many residents won’t follow the ban.
B. Reaction to the reform will vary personally.
C. Other measures should be taken to protect wetter.
D. Water officials should take many factors into account.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Las Vegas Plans to Ban Useless Grass
B. A Method Is Adopted to Save Las Vegas
C. Choices between Beauty and Practice
D. Grass Is Important but Useless in Las Vegas

Last but not the least, I strongly recommend that you should give a call to your parents when you are homesick and helpless since parents’ encouragement will always lift you up.
I sincerely hope that you will find my suggestions practical and wish you get rid of those troubles as soon as possible.
