Fire Safety
What are you going to do if you are in a burning house How will you escape Do you know how to save yourself Please read the following passage.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average(平均高度的)person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked(渗)into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement(水泥)might end in injury. Bushes(灌木丛)and grass can help to break a fall.

Life used to be fun for teenagers. They had lots of interests and they used to spend their spare time on them, like seeing a good film, going for a picnic or listening to music. But for many young people, life is harder now. Jobs are difficult to find. It is hard to find a place to live in. Teachers say students have to work harder than they used to. They are less interested in how to spend their share time and more interested in passing exam. They knowthat good exam results may get them better jobs.
But teenagers often feel stressed because they have too much homework to do both at school and at home. They have lots of exams to take. They are too busy studying every day that they don’t have their own time to do what they are interested in. Now more and more teenagers are getting short-sighted(近视)as they study too long every day. So they should think of ways to relax themselves. They should make a plan for study and find time to relax as much as possible.
English Online made a survey on The Ways for Students to Relax. Here are the results. Some think that watching TV is good. Some believe that sometimes playing computer games isn’t a bad way. Others think the best way to relax is to do sports with classmates.

Should students surf on the internet We divide the opinions into two parts.
We know the Internet is bccoming more and more popular in our daily life. But we also know it has advantages and disadvantages. On the Internet, we can get information as much as we can. We can send e-mails to our friends and talk to them as well. Besides, on the Internet we can read books, enjoy music and watch ball games. We can also do shopping without leaving our homes. It’s good for us to use the Internet.
But now as students, we spend too much time playing computer games. It is bad for our eyes and our study, we should put our hearts into our study. Besides, some students often chat with strangers on the Internet, it’s easy to be cheated. Seriously, sometimes some students can leave home to look for their strange friends.
So we should use the Internet correctly.

There is a saying that all work and no play make one dull. Work is important, but everyone needs leisure time, too. Leisure time means free time to do whatever you want. It’s a time for anything that interests you. Some people like to play sports, such as basketball, football or tennis. Others like to go to interesting places, such as zoos, museums or parks. Many people have hobbies. They make things or collect things in their spare-time. They make themselves relax in this way.
If you want to make things, you could make model ships or planes, sweaters or clothes, cakes or milk shake. If you like to collect things, you could collect stamps, coins, books, leaves or stones. It doesn’t matter what you make or collect, as long as something you do by yourself. Of course, you can also choose to do something that relax yourself, such as listening to music, seeing movies or playing sports.
People with hobbies are not dull. They are interesting because they can talk about their leisure time. Some work and some play will make you interesting, too.

What is the 1 way to learn a language We should remember how we learned our own language well 2 we were children. If we could learn the second language 3 the same way, we would not feel so 4 . Let’s think of what a small child does: he listens to what people say, and he tries to copy what he hears. When he wants 5 , he has to ask for it. He is using the language, talking in it and thinking it all the time. 6 a second language is used all the time, it will soon be learned. It is important to learn a language by hearing people 7 it, not by 8 what they write. We copy what we hear. Dear Sir or Madam,
I am a middle school student. I am writing to you because I have trouble with my English studies now. I hope you can give me some advice.
I work hard both at school and at home. In class, I listen to my teachers very carefully. I take notes of every word of the teachers. After school I read my notes but sometimes I find that I can’t really understand them. The next day, while I am having
class. I am still thinking about the problems. This kind of thing happens day after day. I want to ask the teachers for help. They are kind and I know they will try their best to help me. But they are always very busy. I ask my classmates for help. But they can’t explain things as clearly as the teachers. The night before the test, I still find that I can’t understand many things. So I always get bad grades.
What should I do How can I improve my studies I hope I can hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Harry

Dear Harry,
I am very glad to get your letter. I know you have trouble with your English studies. I think it’s important for us to learn English well. But how to learn English well I’ll give you some advice.
For listening, I think you should listen to tapes or watch English movies as much as possible. For speaking, I believe that joining an English club is helpful to you. For reading, in my opinion, reading English books and newspapers is a good way to improve your reading skills. For writing, maybe the best way is to keep a diary in English every day.
In a word, if you listen, speak, read and write more, I’m sure you can make great progress!
Yours,
Maria

As teenagers, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, like winning the Nobel Prize, or they can be small. You may just want to become one of the best students in your class.
Once you have a dream, what do you do with it Do you ever try to fulfill your dream
Follow Your Heart by Australian writer Andrew Mathews tells us that making our dreams come true is life’s biggest challenge. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or that it is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of thoughts stop you from achieving your dream, the book says.
In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster because a big dream is, in fact, many small dreams.
You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of watching TV will bring you better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book. When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect(尊敬)elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive(敏感)Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.

How should We Treat Foreign Festivals
Nowadays, more and more foreign festivals are coming into China, such as Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day and April Fool’s Day.
Some of them are arousing increasing attention yearly in China. So some people are worried whether these foreign festivals will replace the Chinese traditional festivals.
In my opinion, we should celebrate some meaningful foreign festivals because these festivals help us Chinese to know more about the culture of different countries.
I think we should love our own traditional festivals and never give them up. At the same time, why not try to introduce them to foreign countries
