Rhiannon Potkey writes about sports for a newspaper in Tennessee. She learned through that work that some young people did not have good sports equipment, or gear. She decided to do something about it.
Potkey started an aid group called Goods4Greatness. The charity connects teams and children who need sports equipment with donors. Like Aubree Munro, who is a player on the U.S.A. Women’s softball team. She was hoping to compete at the Olympics in Japan last year. When the event was delayed because of the COVID-19, Munro started cleaning out her home in Florida. She realized she had a lot of extra sports equipment. Munro had heard about Potkey’s organization. So she sent pictures of the gear she no longer needed. Potkey helped find people in Florida who could use the softball equipment.
Munro said by making the donation, she was “paying it forward.” One person who got some of her softball equipment was a girl who reminded Munro of herself when she was young. “That one was particularly special,” she said. “I had a lot of people who did really great things for me when I was growing up.” Munro said doing something nice for a stranger made her feel good.
Many people have donated to Goods4Greatness. The softball team at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina donated used equipment. Former U.S. Women’s Soccer star Julie Foudy donated 100 soccer balls. Colleges in states including Georgia, California and Colorado sent equipment, too.
Jarrett Walls is the tennis coach at a high school near Raleigh, North Carolina. He said many of his players never would have tried the sport if it had not been for the donation from Potkey’s charity. Last year, he said, only seven girls tried to play tennis. This year, he has about 30.
Potkey said, “I enjoy helping children play sports. I feel like there’s so much more need that I could help.”
24. Why did Potkey set up Goods4Greatness
A. To collect used sports equipment.
B. To inspire her to write about sports.
C. To help young people who need sports equipment.
D. To encourage more high school girls to play tennis.
25. Why didn’t Aubree Munro participate in the Olympics in Japan last year
A. Because she had an accident.
B. Because the event was put off.
C. Because she lacked sports equipment.
D. Because she wanted to help a stranger.
26. What does the underlined phrase “paying it forward” probably mean
A. To get others to remind you of something special and valuable.
B. To come up with an idea to donate second-hand sports equipment.
C. To do something special for others to make yourself feel pleased.
D. To do good for someone as a thanks for the help others give you.
27. What’s Jarrett Walls’ attitude towards Goods4Greatness
A. Approval. B. Disapproval C. Sceptical. D. Casual.

Compared with the obvious environmental issues we hear about every day, littering often takes a backseat—but it’s more pressing than we may think.
If you were to throw, say, a banana peel out of your car while driving along the motorway, that would be a completely harmless action, due to the fact that it’s part of a fruit—right Absolutely, no. A banana peel can take up to two years to break drown. An orange peel and a cigarette butt (烟蒂) has a similar biodegrading (生物降解) term to that of a banana, but tin and aluminium cans last up to 100 years; and plastic bottles last forever, as do glass bottles, Styrofoam cups and plastic bags.
Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment and its animals for longer, we can’t only measure the severity (严重性) of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short biodegrading time, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is thrown in the UK every day. Similarly, our regular littering here and there has caused the UK’s rat population to increase by 60 million.
Littering is not a cheap habit either: UK taxpayers spend 500 million in order to keep our streets clean, and when you include our green spaces, that goes up to 1 billion. So, it’s not surprising that if caught littering you could face a 20,000 fine or even jail time and, if you threw away something harmful, the court could give you five years to serve.
To take back our beautiful countryside and cities we need to do more than simply not leaving rubbish where it ought not to be. We need to truly care more about the world around us.
28. Which of the following needs the longest time to break down
A. A banana peel. B. A glass bottle.
C. Aluminium cans. D. An orange peel.
29. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. The quantities of regular litter.
B. The consequences of littering.
C. The harm of longer-lasting materials.
D. The ways of measuring the severity.
30. What does the underlined sentence “Littering is not a cheap habit either” probably mean
A. Littering wastes amounts of money.
B. Littering is harmful to the environment.
C. Whoever litters will be punished in the UK.
D. Whoever litters will be put into prison in the UK.
31. Which of the following would be the best title of this text
A. Why is littering often ignored
B. Why is a banana peel harmless
C. Why is littering a surprisingly big issue
D. Why is protecting environment significant
D
Self-driving cars may sound like something from a sci-fiction novel. However, with advanced trials expected from 2021, they are a lot closer to reality than you may think, and they could really help you.
The introduction of self-driving cars could have a major effect on how older adults go about their daily lives. It is hoped these cars will help reduce the social isolation(孤立)and loneliness we often experience as we get older. Additionally, this technology has the potential to enable a greater level of independence for disabled people.
Connected and automated vehicles, also known as CAVs, are vehicles that could perform many of the functions of today’s human drivers in the future.
The UK is already a world leader in developing connected and automated vehicle technology, thanks to the country’s world-class research base and clear rules for safe and responsible testing. Aware of the potential benefits of the technology—from improving road safety and reducing traffic jams, to enabling greater travel independence—the government has been making efforts to encourage the technology.
Indeed, it has committed to spending over 200 million on research and development and testing infrastructure(基础设施)to accelerate the production of safe and secure automated vehicles. Besides, the government is keen to understand the public’s view around CAVs and continues to survey public attitudes. It is also taking big steps towards establishing how our laws and regulations might need to change to support the safe use of self-driving cars. And last year the government created new insurance rules for self-driving cars.
However, there is still a way to go until self-driving cars will be fully introduced onto our roads. Even so, with some of the nation’s brightest minds working alongside organizations, there is a convincing opportunity to build the technology around the needs of those who could benefit most from it.
32. Who could benefit most from self-driving cars
A. The old. B. The women. C. The kids. D. The disabled.
33. What urged the UK government to encourage the technology
A. Playing a leading role in this area.
B. Having the advanced research base.
C. Possessing enough ability to test the technology.
D. Recognizing the advantages of the technology.
34. What can we learn from Paragraph 5
A. Self-driving cars have nothing to do with insurance.
B. Public attitudes towards self-driving cars are ignored.
C. There is lots of work to do before using self-driving cars.
D. Any present regulation can be applied to self-driving cars.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. Self-driving cars could soon be a reality.
B. Producing self-driving cars is difficult.
C. Self-driving cars are beneficial to users.
D. Driving self-driving cars is common now.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Small boats loaded with various goods sped to the great liner as she was entering the harbour. Before she had anchored, the men from the boats had climbed on board and the decks were soon covered with all kinds of beautiful things they tried to sell. It was difficult not to be attracted. Many of the tourists on board had begun bargaining with the tradesmen, but I decided not to buy anything until I had got off.
I had no sooner got off the ship than I was assailed (纠缠) by a man who wanted to sell me a diamond ring. I had no intention of buying one, but I could not deny the fact that I was impressed by the size of the diamonds. Some of them were as big as marbles (小玻璃球). The man tried his best to prove that the diamonds were real. As we were walking past a shop, he held a diamond firmly against the window and made a deep impression in the glass. It took me over half an hour to get rid of him.
The next man to approach me was selling expensive pens and watches. I examined one of the pens closely. It certainly looked authentic. At the base of the gold cap, the words ‘made in the U.S.A.’ had been neatly carved. The man said that the pen was worth£50, but as a special favour, he would let me have it for£30. I shook my head and held up five fingers showing that I was willing to pay£5. Gesticulating (打手势) wildly, the man acted as if he found my offer extremely unfair, but he finally reduced the price to£10. Shrugging my shoulders, I began to walk away when, a moment later, he ran after me and pushed the pen into my hands. Though he kept throwing up his arms in despair, he readily accepted the£5 I gave him. I felt especially pleased with my wonderful bargain.

1.续写的短文词数应为150左右;

应用文(15分)
Dear schoolmates,
In recent years, an increasing number of people are addicted to the Internet. However, it does have a bad effect on our health. Faced with this situation, we appeal to all the students to avoid addiction to the Internet and treasure our lives.
First of all, we’d better limit our time spent on the Internet. It will do great harm to our eyes to be exposed to computers or mobile phones for too long. Plus, unload the unnecessary apps on our mobile phones to avoid the invitation to online games.
I’m definitely convinced that by doing so, we can enjoy a better life. (90 words)

读后续写(25分)
After I got home, my daughter Lily found the pen in my luggage by accident. She admired it so much that she begged for it. On hearing it, I burst into laughter and gave it to her as a gift. Mary held the pen firmly and burst into her own room. However, a few minutes later, she came back with her head lowered and handed the pen over to me without saying a word. I asked her what was the matter, and she just pointed at the pen and a bottle of ink on the desk. I took it over and made an attempt. (89words)
No matter how hard I tried, it was impossible to fill this beautiful pen with ink. Nor could I write a single word! How come I felt extremely embarrassed. When Mary asked me where the pen came from, I told her the whole story. Now, the pen is still placed in my drawer near my bed. Whenever I look for a pen, I always see it in my drawer and think of my experience someone may encounter in life. (63words)

Text 1
M: I’ve made a shipping list. Is there anything else you want to buy while we are downtown
W: Let’s stop at the camera shop to get some color film.
Text 2
W: Excuse me. I’m looking for Mrs. Brennan’s class.
M: It’s in Room 321. But it’s only 6:15. Her class starts in half an hour according to the schedule.
Text 3
M: Hi, there! I’m Terry from the sales department. You’re new around here, huh
W: Yes. I’m the new secretary to Mr. Black. My name is Maria. I just started a couple of weeks ago.
Text 4
W: Look at the clouds. They’re beautiful.
M: Yeah. Well, we’ll have a long flight. Let’s watch a film to kill time.
W: Hmm, I’d rather read my book.
Text 5
M: It’s too hard to form a habit. I guess I’ll never get used to getting up early.
W: Why say so You’ve tried the first step.
Text 6
W: I love this jacket! Do you have another one just like it
M: I’m afraid that’s the last one we have on medium. Is there anything wrong with it
W: There’s a little dirt on the left sleeve. But I really like it a lot!
M: Well, if you buy the jacket as it is, then I can offer you a reduced price. How does a 20% discount sound
W: That’s OK then.
Text 7
W: Hi there! I’m not late, am I
M: Yeah, only a few minutes. But you’re never exactly early.
W: Well, it’s the traffic. There were many buses stopping anything from moving up London Road.
M: You’re wrong. It’s the cars that make traffic jams because there are so many of them. And most of the cars have no more than one person in them --- like you! Anyway, I don’t know why you don’t come to work on your bike. You’d pass all the jams, and you’d be fitter.
W: I just don’t accept that. What about the air I’d breathe while I was cycling I’d get wet in the rain. And I’d arrive at work all hot and sweaty.
Text 8
W: I am attracted by the ancient Silk Road. I have read lots of books about it.
M: Yes, it’s an interesting subject. China had a connection to the West all those years ago.
W: They should make it into a tourist route — organize trips along the whole length. I would book a ticket.
M: But it goes through different countries besides China — India, Afghanistan, Iran…places like that.
W: Oh, I would love to visit Iran.
M: It is very hot there, apparently. But some of the buildings look splendid.
W: The art is amazing. It is in India as well.
M: There were a few Silk Road routes but they would all be interesting to see.
Text 9
M: This soup is amazing, Jenny. Do you use fresh tomatoes to make it
W: No, Stephen. I just use a can of tomatoes. Some people think roast tomatoes are best, but that’s too much hard work for me.
M: Who taught you to make it
W: My aunt’s friend gave the instructions to my mother, who changed them a bit, and then taught me.
M: It's not too thin, is it
W: That’s because I don’t use much water. At first, I used four cups, then three, but I think two is best really.
M: So, what else is in it
W: Some butter, an onion, the tomatoes, salt and pepper, and to make it really nice, a cup of milk. It’s much cheaper than cream, you know.
M: Mmm. How long does it take to make
W: No longer than twenty minutes. You fry the onion for five minutes, and everything else, then boil for about ten.
