Shark attacks in the screen are amazing. That’s because your actual chances of ever being attacked by a shark are mere one in 11.5 million. That’s roughly the same as your chances of winning an Oscar, which makes shark attack survivor, Mike Coots both incredibly unlucky and lucky: When Mike was 18, he lost his leg to a shark bite.
“I was attacked by a tiger shark in late October 1997. It was near my home on the island of Kauai — a typical fall morning with friends. The waves were really good, so nothing was stopping us.” That is until a large shark came right up under Mike and sank his teeth into Mike’s lower leg. As he tried to free himself, the shark bit down harder, shaking its head back and forth and tossing Mike around like a rag doll. Mike followed his instinct: He struck the shark in the face, again and again until the shark released him. As Mike swam back into shore, he realized his lower right leg was gone. Mike’s friends rushed to his aid, and sent him to the hospital.
As soon as Mike was well, he did what many of us might consider unthinkable: he started riding the waves again. In fact, his first time back was near the site of his attack. But Mike was unshaken. Instead, he was curious — why was he attacked His curiosity led him to research sharks, and Mike did learn something that would change his life: Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around.
His situation as a shark survivor empowered him to give sharks a voice, Mike says. He began working with the Hawaii state authorities to help pass a ban (禁令) on shark-derived products. “I partnered with other like-minded shark attack survivors and marine biologists, and we headed to Washington to urge (极力主张) senators to create a nationwide bill protecting sharks.”
24. Why does the author show the chances of being attacked by sharks
A. To inform readers of some relevant knowledge.
B. To show everyone has the chance of winning an Oscar.
C. To attract people to watch shark attacks in the screen.
D. To highlight Mike’s unusual experience of the shark attack.
25. How did Mike survive the shark attack
A. By hitting the shark hard continually.
B. By swimming desperately to the shore.
C. By screaming loudly for his friends’ help.
D. By shaking its head up and down to get away.
26. What came to mind when Mike rode the waves again
A. To overcome his fear of sharks.
B. To find out the reason for his being attacked.
C. To prove humans are more dangerous than sharks.
D. To research on how sharks attack humans.
27. What did Mike do to protect sharks
A. He passed a ban on shark-derived products.
B. He urged shark attack survivors to protect sharks.
C. He tried to help the authorities to protect sharks.
D. He signed a nationwide bill in Washington.

Too much screen time for kids can lead to poor health, the American Heart Association (AHA) says. A scientific statement published by the AHA in the medical journal Circulation said screen time from smartphones, tablet computers and other devices can lead kids to a sedentary (惯于久坐不动的) lifestyle, increasing the possibility that they grow up as overweight or obese (肥胖的).
The AHA is the latest organization urging parents to limit how much time their kids spend in front of screens. It recommends children get one to two hours of screen time each day. Although television viewing among children and teens has dropped, the use of smartphones and tablet computers has surged.
“Although the mechanisms (机制) linking screen time to obesity are not entirely clear, there are real concerns that screens influence eating behaviors, mainly because children don’t notice when they are full when eating in front of a screen,” said Tracie Barnett, a researcher at the INRS- Institut Armand-Frappier Research Centre, in a statement.
Barnett, one of the authors of the statement, also urges parents to keep screens out of kids’ bedrooms, raising the fear that too much screen time can affect sleep.
Many studies have warned about the potential (潜在的) negative effects of too much screen time. Last year, a study from researchers at San Diego State University (SDSU) found nearly half of teens who spent five or more hours in front of screens every day experienced long periods of hopelessness or sadness.
Apple, who makes the iOS mobile platform, plans to introduce new tools to devices to help users cut back on screen time. As for iOS 12, iPhones will include a screen time feature where users can control and review how they spend time on their mobile devices. Another company that makes the Android platform will introduce “digital well-being” tools such as screen time limits and a “wind down” option to encourage users to put down their phones before bed.
28. Which can replace the underlined word “surged” in paragraph 2
A. Increased suddenly. B. Decreased slowly.
C. Stayed the same. D. Lost the balance.
29. How do screens influence children’s eating behavior
A. By changing the time they eat.
B. By changing their taste for food.
C. By influencing how fast they eat.
D. By influencing their feeling of fullness.
30. What effect did too much screen time have in SDSU’s study
A. It affected children’s sleep. B. It led to children’s obesity.
C. It resulted in diet problems. D. It negatively influenced moods.
31. What will Apple do to deal with the screen time problem
A. Reduce its products’ battery life. B. Provide a screen time feature.
C. Introduce “digital well-being” tools. D. Add a “wind down” option to its products.
D
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making it possible for companies to monitor workers’ behavior in great detail and in real time. Start to slack off (懈怠), and AI could talk to your boss.
One company offering such services is London-based start-up Status Today. Its AI platform relies on a regular supply of employee data, including everything from the files you access to when you use a key card.
From this, it builds a picture of how employees normally function and signals any unusual performance. The idea is to spot when someone might become a security risk by doing something different from their usual behavioral patterns. “All of this gives us a fingerprint of a user, so if we think the fingerprint doesn’t match, we raise a warning,” says Mircea Dumitrescu, the company’s chief technology officer.
The system also aims to catch employee actions that could accidentally cause a security breach (漏洞), like opening malware (恶意软件). “We’re not monitoring if your computer has a virus.” says Dumitrescu. “We’re monitoring human behavior.”
But catching the security breach means monitoring everyone, and the AI can also be used to track employee productivity. “It seems like they are just using the reputation of AI to give an air of lawfulness to old-fashioned workplace surveillance (监视),” says Javier Ruiz Diaz of digital campaigning organization the Open Rights Group. “You have a right to privacy and you shouldn’t be expected to give that up at work.”
Exactly how companies use the system will be up to them, but it’s hard to shake the picture of an AI constantly looking over employees’ shoulders. “It will bother people, and that could be counterproductive if it affects their behavior,” says Paul Bemal at the University of East Anglia.
Phil Legg at the University of the West of England says it will never catch every security risk. “If people know they’re being monitored, they can change their behavior,” he says.
What does the underlined part “a fingerprint of a user” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. An employee’s general behavior. B. Evidence against an employee.
C. An employee’s best record D. Access to an employee.
33. What’s Javier Ruiz Diaz’ s attitude towards the system
Curious. B. Appreciative. C. Casual. D. Negative.
What is Phil Legg’s concern for the system
A. It is too risky to be used at work.
B. It will affect employees’ emotions.
C. It may not be so effective as expected.
D. It cannot change employees’ behavior.
35. What’s the best title for the text
A. Watch out for security breaches
B. It’s time to improve your job performance
C. Be aware of your privacy in the workplace
D. Workplace AI may tell your boss if you’re slacking.

When it comes to having fun in the sun, it’s easy to lose track of time. If you’re not careful, this can be quite dangerous. 36 But it can easily be prevented — all you need is a little sunscreen.
37 People have been using chemical pastes to protect themselves from the sun for centuries. But the first modern sunscreen sold on the market was offered by French company: L’oreal in 1935.
Several other companies were quick to release their own sunscreens. Perhaps the biggest advancement in the world of sunscreen came in the 1970s, when scientists started looking at the sun protection factor, or SPF. 38
The advantages of using sunscreen are obvious. It limits the painful effects of sunburn.
39 Millions of people have died from skin cancer caused by ultraviolet rays (紫外线). Remember to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside.
Unfortunately, there are many mistaken ideas about sunscreen. 40 Some also think you only need to put it on once for a whole day’s protection or that you don’t need it on cloudy days. None of these things are true. Experts say you should apply sunscreen every two hours when outside — in the daytime, no matter how dark your skin is or what the weather is like.
A. And it can even save your life.
B. Sunscreen is not exactly a recent invention.
C. Choosing a sunscreen isn’t as simple as it used to be.
D. In direct sunlight, sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes.
E. This rating is a number that shows how effective a sunscreen is.
F. It’s believed that you don’t need much sunscreen if you have dark skin.
G. Some think a good method is to cover as much as possible with protective clothing.

36. D 根据上文“When it comes to having fun in the sun, it’s easy to lose track of time. If you’re not careful, this can be quite dangerous. (当谈及在阳光下开心玩耍,人们很容易忘记时间。如果你不小心,这可能是相当危险的。)”以及后文“But it can easily be prevented — all you need is a little sunscreen. (但这很容易预防——你所需要的只是一点点防晒霜。)”可知,上文提到在阳光下玩耍不注意会很危险,后文提到了防晒霜,可推测本句是在说明这一危险是晒伤。故D选项“在阳光直射下,不到15分钟就会被晒伤。”符合语境,故选D。
37. B 根据后文“People have been using chemical pastes to protect themselves from the sun for centuries. But the first modern sunscreen sold on the market was offered by French company: L’oreal in 1935. (几个世纪以来,人们一直使用含化学物质的浆糊来保护自己免受日晒。但1935年,法国公司欧莱雅在市场上推出了第一款现代防晒霜。)”可知,本段主要在说明防晒霜的发明历史,故B选项“防晒霜并不是最近才发明的。”符合语境,故选B。

40. F 根据上文“Unfortunately, there are many mistaken ideas about sunscreen.(不幸的是,关于防晒霜有很多错误的观念。)”以及后文“Some also think you only need to put it on once for a whole day’s protection or that you don’t need it on cloudy days. None of these things are true. Experts say you should apply sunscreen every two hours when outside — in the daytime, no matter how dark your skin is or what the weather is like. (也有些人认为你只需要涂一次就能保护一整天,或者阴天不需要。这些都不是真的。专家说,在白天,无论你的皮肤有多黑或天气如何,在户外每两个小时就应该涂一次防晒霜。)”可知,本段主要是关于防晒霜的一些误解,故本句承接上文具体说明人们的误解是什么,F选项中“you have dark skin”对应文中“how dark your skin”。

(Text 10)
W: Last year our school entered a science fair. Our teacher gave us a few ideas and then we had to design a scientific experiment. We were divided into teams and had to decide which field we would work in, like chemistry, physics or biology. Our teacher suggested looking for more ideas in science magazines and books, but I’d rather get the information online. My family home has a big garden and I like helping my father grow vegetables. So my team decided to focus on how the weather affected the growing process. We had to make our experiment as specific as possible, so we decided to think about whether the amount of rain received made a difference to the vegetable size. Then we began to design our experiment. Our teacher pointed out that a single experiment wouldn’t be enough to prove our theory. He suggested doing the experiment at least three times but in the end we only had time to do two. When we’d written up each part of the process, we had to design a display for the fair. We tried our best to present our information as well as we could. What’s more, we’d taken lots of photos — none of the other teams did that! Finally, we came third in the competition which was great! It was just a really interesting project and I learned so many new things.
