Places of Interest in Wales
Conway: On the north Wales coast, Conway is where you’ll find the world’s smallest house, as well as a much larger “house”, Conway Castle, which was built in the 13th century.
Anglesey: This beautiful island is joined to the rest of north Wales by a road bridge and a railway bridge, and it’s just a short drive from Conway. Here you can visit the village of Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll which has the strangest name in Europe. Don’t miss the station. The sign runs the complete length of the platform! Also on Anglesey is Beaumaris Castle, which was started in the 13th century and to this day remains unfinished.
Snowdonia: Just a couple of hours’ drive from Beaumaris is the Snowdonia mountain range, which takes its name from the highest mountain in Wales, Mount Snowdon. From there, visit the famous Swallow Falls at nearby Betws y Coed.
Portmeirion: In 1925 Clough, Williams Ellis bought an attractive piece of Welsh land for less than £5, 000. He then set out to show the world how a naturally beautiful castle could be built without being damaged and spent the next 50 years building the town of Portmeirion with a style of Italy.

One afternoon, when I walked out of the supermarket, I found an old man who struggled with two bags of food. It was very cold. I guessed he must have a long walk ahead of him. I stopped the car near him and put the window down to ask if he needed a ride. With a little hesitation, he did accept.
After he got settled in the car, my husband and I introduced ourselves, but he didn’t say a word. During the drive, we tried to make him more comfortable with some small talk. His home was more than two miles away, so it would have been a difficult walk for anyone, let alone an old man carrying bags.
When we pulled up outside his door, the first thing he asked was “How much money do you want ” “Nothing, we just wanted to help,” we answered. The shock and relief on this man’s face was actually sad, because we should be able to live in a world where it isn’t shocking to have someone help you out of the goodness of their heart without expecting something in return. He was overwhelmed. Tears in his eyes, he said “Thank you!” over and over to me after realizing we truly didn’t want anything, which made me feel proud.
My only words to him were, sir, I hope this helped you out and have a good week. This simple act of kindness is the type of kindness that anyone, anywhere can do. It doesn’t cost a cent. Just be aware of the world happening around you. There is always someone who needs something—a door held, a bag carried . .. the opportunities are endless.

A. Happy and moved. B. Comfortable but grateful.
C. Nervous and quiet. D. Pleased but cautious.

A. He wanted to give us something he bought. B. He planned to pay for the car ride.
C. He decided to introduce himself to us. D. He wanted to show his kindness for us.
27. What can we learn according to the passage
A. Kindness doesn’t cost a cent. B. The acts of kindness should be great.
C. Helping others makes people sad. D. There is always a chance for kindness.
C
The hit movie Notting Hill(诺丁山) begins with a famous scene. Hugh Grant bumps into Julia Roberts and spills(洒)orange juice all over her. After the collision, Grant repeatedly says, “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.”
His actions in this scene are very British. If Roberts’ character were from the Britain, then she would probably apologize repeatedly as well – even if the crash were not her fault. But this doesn’t happen in the movie, as Roberts is from the US.
A report in The Telegraph once said that three quarters of British people apologize when they bump into someone in the street – regardless of(不管) whether they are responsible or not. In fact, Britons use “sorry” in many situations. For example, if they mishear someone, they say “Sorry ” The person they are talking to will also apologize by replying, “No, I am sorry!” This can go on for up to five minutes as they compete over who is the most sorry.
Why are Britons so sorry Mark Tyrell, a psychology writer in the UK, thinks that their apologetic tendencies are rooted in British class system. “We say sorry because historically the new middle class in Britain had to apologize for not being the working class, but also for really being the upper class.” Another theory is that they apologize to avoid conflicts(冲突). For example, if they bump into someone, he might get angry. To avoid this, they instantly say “Sorry!”
True manners are about being considerate, and today’s constant use of apologizing shows that we are perhaps not as thoughtful as we once were. The word “sorry” has lost some of its meaning.
Do you see my point Sorry, it might just be a British thing.
28. Why does the author mention a scene in the movie Notting Hill at the beginning
A. To give an example of British modesty.
B. To introduce different ways of saying sorry.
C. To show what kind of men are considered gentlemen in the UK.
D. To draw our attention to when and how British people say sorry.
29. Which of the following statements might Mark Tyrell agree with
A. People should not apologize if they are not responsible.
B. Americans care less about manners than British people do.
C. That British people apologize so much is linked to the class system.
D. British people care too much about which social class they are from.
30. What can be inferred from the passage
A. It’s unnecessary for British people to be so polite.
B. The overuse of apologizing shows Britons are truly sincere.
C. People should not stick to the traditional use of the word “sorry”.
D. Using “sorry” more doesn’t necessarily mean people are more polite.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To show the best way of saying sorry.
B. To explain why Britons overuse the word “sorry”.
C. To show how saying sorry has changed over time.
D. To suggest many British people lack traditional manners.
D
A Swiss airplane powered only by energy from the sun left from Abu Dhabi early on March 9. Its creators hope the plane will make the first around-the-world journey without any fuel(燃料). The plane is called Solar Impulse 2. It has one seat and is made from carbon fiber. The plane weighs only as much as a car but its wings(机翼) are wider than a Boeing 747. The plane’s wings stretch 72 meters across. Those wings include 17,000 solar units, or cells, which capture the sun’s energy. The energy allows the plane to fly day and night.
Two Swiss scientists built the plane. Bertrand Piccard is also an explorer who made the first non-stop flight around the world in a balloon. Andre Borschberg is an engineer and trained fighter pilot. The scientists say they are not trying to alter the airplane industry. Instead, they want to show that new energy sources and technologies can achieve what some say is impossible. “We want to show we can fly day and night in an aircraft without a drop of fuel.” Mr. Piccard said.
Some parts of the trip will require the pilots to be in the tiny plane for five to six days and nights in a row. So it is good that the pilot’s seat is also a toilet.
The plane’s route begins in the United Arab Emirates. The pilots also plan stops in Oman, India, and China. They will cross the Pacific Ocean, stop in the United States, and continue over southern Europe or North Africa. They plan to arrive back in the United Arab Emirates in late July or early August.
Internet viewers can go to the Solar Impulse website to see the plane’s location and listen to broadcasts from the pilots.
32. Why does the plane have wider wings
A. It can fly faster and land safely. B. It can get the sun’s energy easily.
C. It may look like a Boeing 747. D. It will make the plane appear larger.
33. What does the underlined word “alter” in Para. 2 probably mean
A. improve. B. change. C. rebuild. D. destroy.
34. What do we know about the trip made in the plane
A. It will take five to six days and nights. B. It is a non-stop flight around the world.
C. It is broadcast live on the Internet. D. It doesn’t include North America.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. A solar-powered plane will travel the globe.
B. A good way to save energy has been found.
C. A newly-built plane consumes no energy.
D. Solar energy waits to be fully explored.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficullt, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibity,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the wordlist. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do ” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I’ll become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”
Paragraph 1: Slowly, Peter raised his hand. 。
Paragraph 2:
Peter looked around.

应用文写作(15分)
One possible version:
Hi, Worried,
I’m sorry to know that you’re having such a bad time at the moment. I definitely understand how you feel. Such problems are quite normal. Perhaps the following suggestions are helpful.
To begin with, have a full and frank talk with your classmates about how you feel and tell them not to judge a book by its cover, which is a wise way to let your dark thoughts out. Additionally, take part in more activities in class and show yourself bravely, and your classmates will find you a good person to make friends with. Most importantly, if you are dangerously overweight, it is very important that you should try to lose weight properly. Of course, don’t turn to extreme methods to slim down quickly. You should have a balanced diet nd get plenty of exercise.
I hope you’ll soon feel happy and carry on as normal.
Yours,
Allen

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Slowly, Peter raised his hand. “Mr. White, I didn’tget full marks on the test. I made a mistake.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper, “I spelled contribution with‘s-i’instead of‘t-i’.” Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s test paper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something ever more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.” Mr. White smiled at Peter, “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Paragraph 2:
Peter looked around. He found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us,” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile, he could’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.

A。主旨大意题。根据第一段中A Swiss airplane powered only by energy from the sun left from Abu Dhabi early on March 9. Its creators hope the plane will make the first around-the-world journey without any fuel.

(Text 6)

W: Hello, Ben! How was your weekend
M: Great, thanks! I visited York with Helen and the kids. York is a really beautiful historic city and there are lots of old buildings. And my friendbooked us a really nice hotel.
W: Oh What did you do while you were there
M: Well, we visited the old castle on Saturday. I love history and the kids enjoyed exploring all the different rooms. And we visited the museum on Sunday. It’s so interesting. You can see what the town looked like in the past.
W: What did you do on Saturday evening
M: I wanted to go to a football match, but there were no tickets. So we went to see a movie instead. The kids liked it, but I didn’t. It was boring, to be honest.
W: What did you do for food
M: Helen likes trying new food different from Italian food. So we planned to go to a Thai restaurant. Helen enjoyed it, but the kids didn’t like the food, so we walked to a Chinese restaurant, further along the street.
(Text 10)
M: Hi, I’m Chris from Florida. Last year, I moved to London, where I’m working for an American company. It’s been a big change, and there have been lots of things to get used to. For example, in the U.S. we drive on the right, while here in Britain I’ve had to get used to driving on the left.
What else Well, the weather in Florida is usually great, so I’m used to lots of sunshine, and I used to sunbathe a lot. In London it rains so much. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it, and I always remember to take my umbrella with me.
Food in England is different, too. In America, I used to eat a lot of Mexican food. Here in England, people love Indian food, so I’m getting used to the different tastes. At the company where I work, it’s quite different. I used to work from 9 a.m. till 11 p.m. I hated working so late. Here in England, I start at 8:30 a.m., but finish at 5 p.m. On Friday evening English people like to go to the club with friends, but in AmericaI used to go to the gym. I love sports.
Is there anything else Some of the words are different. The subway is called the “underground” in London, and British people call the fall “autumn”.
