Harper Lee(1926-2016) was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird (published in 1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards.
For decades, the book was Lee’s only major work of published fiction, but it was hugely influential for generations of US readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in the US schools. In 2007 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to literature.
Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she suggested that she had a story in progress.
In 2015, a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as an adult. Accusations(起诉) arose that the 89-year-old Lee was not able to agree to the manuscript’s release(公开), and that various parties had signed on her behalf.
Though Lee moved to New York in 1949, she spent many years guarding her privacy (隐私) in Monroeville, which served as the clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird.
In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke (中风), but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister, Alice, who died in 2014. She was said to eat breakfast every morning at the same fast- food spot, and was friendly with her neighbors. The countless Americans knew her only through her works, and they will undoubtedly miss her,

In Osaka, Japan — Defending champions (卫冕冠军), China lifted the FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup trophy(奖品)with perfect 11 straight wins after easing past Argentina 3-0 here on Sunday. With their eleventh win at the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup, China won the FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup.
This year, the World Cup has been played across different cities, and Team China had training sessions even on traveling days when some participating teams chose to rest up after a tiring flight. “Coach Lang focuses on details of the technique in the training sessions, and I feel our team has become more balanced.” Captain Zhu Ting said. This firm approach explains how China managed to turn the table against the United States at the World Cup. Never giving up, especially in face of the challenge, that’s what the spirit of Chinese women’s volleyball means.
When the team struggled, Zhu was always there, doing whatever was needed to carry the team forward. That’s why she has become a national volleyball icon, just like “Iron Hammer” Lang. As for Lang, she took over the flag from her former coach Yuan Weimin, who was behind China’s rise in the beginning. From coach Yuan to coach Lang, and spiker(主攻手)Lang to spiker Zhu, the flag bearers may have changed over time, but the craving for championships and the steely desire and determination remain the same.
Volleyball is a team sport and behind the on-court (在场上的)team., there is always a supportive coaching team and staff. Lai was one of the members. Shouldering responsibilities as both vice director of China’s Volleyball Management Center and as assistant coach. Apart from coordinating(协调) between coaches and players, Chinese coaches and foreign coaches and sometimes within Chinese coaches, she also has to do chores. During Rio 2016, assistant coach Yuan Lingxi headed for the arena(竞技场)at 6 am every day to film the matches and would return to the Olympic Village at 2 am when he would start analyzing China’s opponents(对手)and file reports. There are many Lais and Yuans that are not known by the public, but who remain indispensable for the team to overcome difficulties and reach their peak.

Faced with a decreasing population and dropping workforce, Japan has been increasingly turning to robots for help. Over the years, the androids have been employed to perform a large number of human tasks, including building products and providing care and companionship for the elderly. The latest addition to the Japanese “workforce” may be Model-T. Designed by Telexistence Inc., this seven-foot-tall robot is currently undergoing trials restocking (补充货源) sandwiches, drinks, and ready meals on shelves at select locations of local convenience store chains Lawson and FamilyMart.
Telexistence has received funding from technology investment company Softbank Group and cell phone service operator KDDI in Japan, with overseas investors including European passenger aircraft maker Airbus Ventures. It named its robot Model-T, a nod to the Ford Motor car that began the age of mass motoring a century ago.
Compared with the warehouse robots being used by companies like Walmart and Amazon, which are only able to accomplish single, repeated tasks, Model-T has a much wider range of movement and can be used to restock objects of various sizes, making it ideal for convenience and grocery stores.
“It is able to grasp or pick and place objects of several different shapes and sizes into different locations,” Matt Komatsu, head of business development and operations at Telexistence Inc., told CNN Business. However, Model-T is not self-controlled. Instead, it is operated by human “pilots” wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset and special gloves, which allow them to feel the product the robot is holding in their hands and guide it to the right shelf. Since the video connection between the robot and the human operator has a mere 50 milliseconds delay, the navigation (导航) process is smooth. Telexistence says the VR-controlled androids are easier to develop and repair. They are also ten times cheaper than self-controlled robots, which require complex programming
Though Model-T appears to have passed the trials, it is not quite ready to enter the labor force. Besides being a lot slower than human labour, it is also only able to lift packaged items, and cannot grasp loose items such as fruits and vegetables. Telexistence hopes to introduce a faster Model-T within the next two years.
32. What is the main reason for the invention of Model-T
A. The shortage of labour force.
B. The demands of senior citizens.
C. The development of technology.
D. The appeal of convenience stores.
33. What’s the hidden message behind the name Model-T
A. It is an updated version of Ford Motor.
B. It may create a new age like Ford Motor.
C. Its design is as fashionable as Ford Motor.
D. Its connection with Ford Motor is inseparable.
34. What can we learn about Model-T according to Paragraph 4
A. It doesn’t need repairs.
B. It performs tasks automatically.
C. It requires complex programming.
D. It depends largely on human’s operation.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly discuss about Model-T
A. Its applications. B. Its advantages.

Dear Smith,
I am delighted to know you are interested in the Mid-Autumn Festival, which has been enjoying great popularity in our country since ancient times. Now I'm writing to tell you the details of this festival. The detailed information is as follow.
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th of the eighth month of our Chinese lunar calendar. As one of the traditional Chinese festivals, it has been enjoying great popularity in our country.
No matter how far away or how busy we are, we will try to come home for a family reunion dinner. The moon that night looks the brightest in the whole lunar month. What we love most is the time we enjoy the full moon together. With the beautiful moon up in the sky, we sit together and eat moon cakes and fruit, sharing our stories. In addition to these traditional activities, we have a wider range of choices such as travelling and visiting our relatives or friends.
All in all, the Mid-Autumn Festival is the most traditional festival in China with its special features. I sincerely hope, if possible, that you can come here in China to have a real experience about it.
Yours,
Li Hua
