Director James Cameron went to new depths for his film-making on Sunday by setting the world record for the deepest ocean dive by a single person.
This type of extreme research is nothing new to the director. Cameron, 57, is most famous for directing Titanic (1997) and Avantar (2009). During the several years of research for Titanic, he famously traveled to the bottom of the ocean to visit the sunken ship. He also visited the deep sea as research for his fictional 1989 film. The Abyss, which is about a submarine that comes across an alien species. “Most people know me as a film-maker,” Cameron said. “But the idea of exploring the ocean has always been the stronger drive in my life.”
Cameron and his team had been preparing for the trip for seven years. On Sunday, Cameron took more than two and a half hours to make the dangerous 6.8-mile journey down to the Trench, an area with near-freezing temperatures, no sunlight, and heavy water pressure. Cameron traveled in a 24-foot-long mini-submarine he helped design, equipped with lights and 3D cameras for filming the adventure. It also had a mechanical arm for collecting samples of soil and deep-sea creatures.
In his well-equipped submarine, Cameron was able to spend three hours in the Trench, exploring and filming. He plans to use his recordings in a 3D film production for movie theaters and for a National Geographic TV special. “I see this as the beginning,” Cameron said. “Its not a one-time deal. This is just the beginning of opening up this new frontier.”

Christian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.
At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (細菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He didnt eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate—refined white rice (精炼米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery —that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (维生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a persons food.
Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins from the food they eat. If they dont, they can also take vitamin pills.

A. a kind of vitamin B. a medical treatment
C. a kind of germ D. a kind of rice
9. Christian Eijkman went to the island of Java to ____.

C. help the Javanese with their illness D. do some research about the island

A. To eat them. B. To give the Javanese a surprise.
C. To carry out his experiments. D. To make money by selling them.
11. We can learn from the passage that ____.

C. the Javaneses disease was caused by a kind of germ

Over the next decade, technology will decimate more jobs in many professions.
Some robots already cost less to operate than the salaries of the humans they replace, and they are getting cheaper. Boston Consulting Group predicts that, by 2025, the operating cost of a robot that does welding (焊接) will be less than $2 per hour, for example. Thats more affordable than the $25 per hour that a human welder earns today in America.
Uber and many other companies are working on developing cars and trucks that dont need a driver in the drivers seat. According to the American Trucking Associations, approximately 3 million truck drivers were employed in the United States in 2010, and 6.8 million others were employed in other jobs relating to trucking activity. We could be talking about millions of jobs disappearing in the early 2020s.
And then there is the “Gig Economy (零工經济)” that has some businesses moving toward part-time, on-demand employment. Uber has already done this to taxi drivers, and other technology companies are doing it to a wide range of jobs. A study by Intuit predicted that, by 2020, 40% of American workers will be self-employed, and that full-time jobs will be harder to find. We are talking about 60 million people in this category. The problem is that not only do such part-time workers lack reliable full-time jobs and sick pay, but they cant enjoy health insurance and longer-term benefits.
The measures to be taken are to raise trade barriers. But closing the doors to foreign trade wont bring jobs back. It will only slow the global economy and hurt American exports, shrinking the U.S. economy and accelerating job loss.
12. What will happen with technologies developing according to the text?
A. Robots will become smarter and smarter.
B. Ubers labor cost will be lower and lower.
C. More and more truck drivers will be needed.
D. Taxi drivers can enjoy more health insurance.
13. Which of the following is an advantage of a full-time job?
A. It may be flexible. B. It may offer sick pay.
C. It is full of adventure. D. It is always well-paid.
14. Which of the following does the writer agree on?
A. Welcoming foreign trade. B. Offering more part-time jobs.
C. Using fewer robots to stop job loss. D. Developing more new technologies.
15. Whats the writers main purpose in writing the text?
A. To show technology advances in our daily life.
B. To prove technologies cause low incomes.
C. To introduce what the Gig Economy is.
D. To warn the Gig Economy is coming.
II.

根据第三段第一句“Uber and many other companies are working on developing cars and trucks that dont need a driver in the drivers seat.”
根据第四段最后一句“The problem is that not only do such part-time workers lack reliable full-time jobs and sick pay, but they cant enjoy health insurance and longer-term benefits.”
14. A。 根据文章最后两句“But closing the doors to foreign trade wont bring jobs back. It will only slow the global economy and hurt American exports, shrinking the U.S. economy and accelerating job loss.”
再根据第四段第一句“And then there is the ‘Gig Economy (零工经济) that has some businesses moving toward part-time, on-demand employment.”

China dreams are made up of all Chinese peoples dreams. As a middle school student, whats my dream?
I dream of becoming a teacher when I grow up, and I hope to work in my old school. Because I want to reward my teachers for teaching me so well. Ill also try my best to teach my students as my teachers taught me. To achieve my dream, Ill have to study harder from now on. Ill never give up my dream no matter what difficulties I meet. Im sure my dream will come true as long as I hold on to it.
If everyone does so, I strongly believe our China dreams must come true and China will get better and better.
