As a young black kid living in a poor community(社区), if someone told me that I would grow up to become an author, I would have laughed. In Valdosta, Georgia, where I grew up, my community encouraged two ways to a better life for little boys like me. Being a sportsman, and being an actor were the two ways. Both do not require much of a traditional education for success. I was no different than the other kids living in my neighborhood, so I did what felt natural: playing football and neglecting(忽视) school.
However, deep down inside, I knew I was as smart as everyone else. I also knew that I really liked stories and the pictures that went with them in some books. Fortunately, through athletic scholarships (奖学金) and people who believed in me, I was able to go to college. That's when my reading difficulties began to show up. Trips to the store were discouraging because there was so much reading involved in the simple act of buying food. I didn't understand labels (标签) and took the wrong goods.
I realized that I needed to make an important decision. I wanted to be a better version of myself, which meant becoming a stronger reader. I began by practicing reading as much as I practiced football. At first, some words were too big, some sentences too long and some books too thick, but I kept at it. I always had a book on me and read every free moment I could find. Through effort and hard work, my reading, step by step became limitless. I read fiction and nonfiction and finally began writing.
Today I'm a published author. My new book, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World, comes from my personal experience as a struggling reader who found a way to start loving books. Both my story and the main character Henley's story are examples of the magical power that books have whether you're the reader or writer. And I want my little readers to know that.
24. What can we learn about the author when he was young
A. He lived in a rich community.
B. He didn't show much interest in sports.
C. He was quite different from other boys around him.
D. He wasn't encouraged to receive a good education.
25. What did the author realize after he entered college
A. He had difficulty in reading. B. He wasn't trusted by others.
C. He wasn't as smart as others. D. He could hardly afford the costs.
26. What decision did the author make
A. To write a book. B. To have a stronger body.
C. To give up practicing football. D. To spend much more time on reading.
27. Why did the author most probably write My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World
A. To prove himself to others. B. To introduce a book to others.
C. To tell readers how to be a writer. D. To encourage children to read more.
C
Cycling through the park and riding off-road through the forest are great ways to enjoy the outdoors and have fun. Over the course of 200 years, bicycles have changed a lot and have changed the way we travel, exercise and enjoy ourselves. Here, we take a ride through the wonderful world of bikes.
The first two-wheeled bicycle, similar to the ones we use today, was built in 1817 in Germany. At the time, horses were the main method of transport. However, thanks to a poor harvest (收获), there was a shortage of food to feed the horses, so they could not be used. Baron Karl von Drais invented a bike made of wood, with no pedals (踏板). He made himself move forward by pushing off the ground with his feet.
In the 1860s, engineers in France made bikes with pedals on the front wheel. These were the first bikes to be called bicycles, although they were nicknamed “boneshakers” because they were so uncomfortable to ride. Other people also used the similar design, and some added much larger front wheels. These strange-looking bikes were known as penny farthings - named after two British coins of very different sizes. They became popular but were unsafe because they had a very high saddle (车座).
In 1885, John Kemp Starley from England made the “safety bike”, which had equal-sized front and back wheels. Soon after that, the first air-filled tyres (轮胎) were added to bicycles, making them much more comfortable to ride. This led to bikes becoming very popular in both Europe and the US. In 1896, a New York Times article said, “The bicycle promises a development of personal power and freedom, hardly inferior (较差的) to what wings would give.”
28. What purpose does the first paragraph serve
A. To introduce the topic of bikes. B. To list some examples of bikes.

D. was pulled forward by a horse
30. What led to the first bicycles being called “boneshakers”
A. Their great safety. B. Their penny-like looks.
C. The huge popularity they enjoyed. D. The uncomfortable riding experience.
31. What is the passage mainly about
A. It talks about a riding journey through forests.
B. It introduces the history of bicycle development.
C. It is about how bicycles have become popular over years.
D. It tells us the advantages of riding a bicycle.

In December 2019, Lauren Robinson walked into science class. “My throat started closing,” she remembers. “They called an ambulance (救护车), and I had to go to the hospital.” It wasn't the first time that Lauren had to be rushed to the hospital. That's because Lauren, 15, has a food allergy (过敏症).
Many people have food allergies. But Lauren's allergy is much worse than most. She can't eat food that contains milk. When she was younger, Lauren could stay safe by choosing food carefully. That changed in middle school. By eighth grade, Lauren couldn't be in the same room with dairy products(乳制品). That's what happened in Lauren's science classroom. Earlier that day in 2019, students had held a pizza party. Cheese particles(微粒) still hung in the air. Lauren never returned to school after that.
In 2020, Lauren got great news. She could go to school and stay safe by driving a robot to class. Lauren controls it from home over the Internet, using a computer. She uses the keyboard to drive the robot from class to class. A video camera on the robot lets Lauren see what is going on in school. A video screen on the robot let students and teachers see her. It has microphones(话筒) so that everyone can talk to Lauren, too.
At first, Lauren thought that using the robot was “a weird idea”. No one went to school like that. "I kept knocking into walls at first," says Lauren, laughing. “I'd keep falling!” But she got used to it quickly. Using the robot feels natural now. Lauren even created a way to “raise her hand” using the robot's headlights. “ I can turn them on and off until the teacher sees me,” she explains.
Lauren looks forward to going to college. She'd like to work in a medical job.
32. Why was Lauren sent to the hospital and never returned school in December 2019
A. She accidentally drank some milk.
B. She carelessly touched some pizza.

Kids' health: Four steps for fighting stress(压力)
Everybody gets stressed from time to time. 36 Some ways of dealing with stress - like screaming (尖叫) or hitting someone - don't solve much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.
Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to trusted adults, such as parents or other relatives (亲戚). 37 They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
Do not take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. In fact, that’s not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. 38
Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business. 39 Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.
Be positive. Most stress is temporary.Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out (弄清楚) the problem and start working on solving it.
These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a hard time, you will help yourself feel better even faster. 40 So, remember the above ways when you are stressed.
A. You’d better turn to them to get you through the difficult situation.
B. Notice your friends' feelings and find a way to help them.
C. Different people feel stress in different ways.
D. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
E. You need to figure out what the problem is.
F. Chatting with your friends is also a good choice.
G. Then, find a way to calm down.

Dear Li Hua,
Learning that you are faced with difficulties and challenges in learning English, I'm glad to share my suggestions with you.
As we all know, communication plays an important role in language learning, so you had better talk with your classmates or e-pals online in English as much as possible. It is an effective way to improve your oral English and listening ability. Besides, spending much time reading English newspapers and magazines will be helpful, which can both enlarge your vocabulary and broaden your horizons. Moreover, I strongly recommend you keep English journals every day. Only by putting what you have learned into use will your English be improved.
Hopefully, you can find my advice useful. I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Tom
