Math is one of the most boring classes for many students. But recently, a math class at the University of California in the US got 400 students interested. There were even another 35 watching from behind windows.
Who could make a boring subject so interesting? Terence Tao, the 31-year-old professor. He is known as “the Mozart of Math”. “Tao is a prodigy (神童) of his time,” said Charles Ferrerman, also a mathematician (数学家).
Tao, born in Hong Kong, spent his childhood in Australia. At age two, he could read. At nine, he went to college math classes. At 20, he got his doctor s degree.
Last summer, Tao won a Fields Medal (菲尔兹奖). This is known as the “Nobel Prize of math”. Tao s best-known work is on prime numbers (素数) (numbers such as 2, 3, 5 and 7). The Greek mathematician Euclid (欧几里德) first worked on them 2,300 years ago.
Although he was talented, Tao didn t go to college until he was 14. “There s no point going to college too young,” said Tao. He said studying well is like building a pyramid. A pyramid must have a strong base. Then it can be built higher.
In some ways he s like the rest of us. Tao wears an Adidas sweatshirt and an old pair of sports shoes. He reads Japanese comic books. But he said his first love is still math. “In many ways, my work is my hobby,” he said.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system that has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses for more than 2,000 years. TCM is based on a belief in yin and yang—defined (下定义) as opposing energies, such as earth and heaven, winter and summer, and happiness and sadness. When yin and yang are in balance, you feel relaxed and energized. Out of balance, however, yin and yang negatively affect your health.
Persons who practice a skill or an art also believe that there is a life force or energy in every body, known as qi (pronounced “chee”). In order for yin and yang to be balanced and for the body to be healthy, qi must be balanced and flowing freely. When there s too little or too much qi in one of the body s energy pathways (called meridians), or when the flow of qi is blocked, illness results.
The final goal of TCM treatment is to balance the yin and yang in our lives by promoting the natural flow of qi. In an interesting way, often used to explain its nature, qi is described as the wind in a sail; we do not see the wind directly, but we are aware of its presence as it fills the sail.
The first writings about TCM date back to 200 B.C.E. Herbal medicine and acupuncture (针刺疗法), including theory, practice, diagnosis, and treatment, were recorded in classical Chinese texts and refined over many centuries.
8. What is the best title for this passage?

10. When can you be considered to be healthy according to the passage?
A. When the body s energy pathways block.
B. When qi in your body flows up and down.
C. When herbal medicine and acupuncture work.
D. When yin and yang keep a balanced state.
11. What can we learn about TCM from the passage?
A. It has a complete balance of yin and yang.
B. It is described as the special wind in a sail.
C. It promotes the natural science of medicine.
D. It has a long history of several thousand years.

The dad of the two youngest survivors of US Airways Flight 1549 s incredible landing in the Hudson River said the near-death experience “brought out the best in humanity”. It has been eleven years since US Airways Flight 1549 landed in the Hudson River.
Sosa, now 58, told The Post in an e-mail Monday. “As strange as the experience was, it brought out the best in humanity as witnessed by the selfless efforts of so many men and women who came to our aid without thinking twice about their safety. I am grateful to all of them.”
Sosa and his wife Tess were traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, that day with 9-month-old Damian and 4-year-old Sofia. The couple were sitting several rows apart when the Airbus A320 suddenly struck a flock of Canada geese moments after taking off from LaGuardia Airport.
Sosa could smell jet fuel burning and immediately knew they were in danger. “There was an explosion in the left engine which I could see from my seat,” he recalled. “The next thing I knew the plane went dead silent when both engines broke down. I got a quick glance at Tess seated ahead of me when we both realized we were in trouble.”
The next three minutes were harrowing (折磨). The powerless plane plunged over The Bronx and pointed toward the Hudson, where it would eventually ditch (在水上迫降), thanks to a split-second decision by Capt. Sullenberger.
