Police in China's Chengdu city use big data to trace potential contacts of Covid-19 cases
At least 82,000 potential contacts of confirmed Covid-19 cases have been traced, according to a city government in western China, but the use of big data analysis to identify the contacts has sparked mixed feelings.
From last Wednesday, some Chengdu residents (41)________telephone messages saying they had been identified by police as being in the "company of time and space" of confirmed Covid-19 cases. They were asked to report to the authorities and take at least two nucleic acid tests within three days to determine if they were (42)_______with Covid-19.
According to Chengdu authorities, being in the "company of time and space" refers to people whose telephone (43)______ were detected near-an area measuring 800 metres by800 metres (2,600 feet by 2,600 feet)-a confirmed virus carrier for more than 10 minutes in a given 14-day period.(44)______, at least one of the pair-the (45)________ case or the person contacted by police stayed in Chengdu for a total of more than 30 hours during that period.
By Wednesday, 82,000 such people had been identified in the capital city of Sichuan, which has a(n) (46)_______of over 20 million.
Owners of the phones---regardless of whether there was direct (47)______with the case - are obliged to do the tests.
Any person identified as in "company of time and space"(48)_______ their green health code, which is essential for travel and transport in the country. And the subjects are asked to stay home and are restricted from (49)______ public venues and taking public transport before negative nuclei test results are produced.
Some mainland cities began to use the term derived from big data analysis in recent months. but their definitions and (50)_______differ.
In Changsha in central Hunan province, the grids used in tracking overlapping phone signals were (51)______the locations of mobile phone base stations. If someone received phone signals from the same base station as a confirmed case for over 10 minutes, that person would be defined as in "company of time and space" and required to (52)_____ three nuclei tests within seven days.
In mainland China, all telephone numbers must be registered with (53)_______ names and the users' identity cards, making it easy for authorities to (54)______ and trace the movements of citizens via telephone signals.
The move was part of authorities' effort to (55)________ transmission during the latest Covid-19 outbreak that has spread to 20 provinces, with 68 new local cases reported on Thursday.

Where it's unsafe and unjust to bicycle in California
In some communities in California, the simple act of bicycling to work or pedaling around the neighborhood can be filled with risk. There are few if any bike lanes or bike paths to (1)_____ cyclists from speeding cars. The streets may be full of cracks and potholes.
And riders, particularly Latino and Black men, can become (2)______ of law enforcement officers, who use minor infractions(违规)---like riding on the sidewalk --- as pretext to stop question and search them. A recent Times investigation detailed how the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department routinely (3)_______ bicyclists in poorer communities with large nonwhite populations, and those riders were more likely to be (4)______ or detained in the back of a patrol car.
In short, cyclists in certain Los Angeles County communities are treated like (5)______and harassed by deputies just for trying to get across town on two wheels -which is exactly the kind of (6)_______ transportation that California has, in theory, embraced as a way to fight climate
change.
In fact, state leaders attended the world summit in Glasgow, Scotland this week to tout the state's progress in (7)______climate change and get (8)_______ on how to do more. And for California, the "do more" part has to include slashing(消减)greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, which is the state's largest source of planet-warming (9)______.
California has programs to (10)______ bike lanes and bike paths, along with safer sidewalks and streets, to make it easier for people to get around without a car. But the state and local governments are moving far too slowly, and there remain gross inequities in which communities have bicycle infrastructure and actively support cyclists, and which do not.
(11)_______ finding support for their carbon-free travel, cyclists in some communities face unsafe and unjust conditions. In East Los Angeles, only 1% of streets have bike lanes, (12)_______ cyclists are expected to navigate crowded and often poorly maintained streets. Of course people are going to ride on the sidewalk, even if it's prohibited, because it's safer.
Yet that (13)______ decision makes cyclists a target for law enforcement. Nearly a quarter of bike stops in East L.A. were for sidewalk violations, The Times reported. In Lynwood, where there are no bike lanes at all, sidewalk violations (14)_______16% of stops. In West Hollywood, which is predominantly white, more streets have bike lanes and the city allows bicyclists to ride on the sidewalk in areas with no bike lanes. Less than 1% of bike stops were (15)_______ because of sidewalk violations.

Don't Mock the Metaverse
“A revolutionary approach on how to connect our world without being super weird...In the Icelandverse, there's...skies you can see with your eyeballs, volcanic rocks you can caress, and really big geysers you can observe from a safe distance." Mr. Zuckerberg may well (6)______ to think about exciting new products than deal with the downsides of his existing ones. And hype is the water in which techies swim. But to stop the analysis there would be too dismissive. There are good reasons to (7)_____ the metaverse seriously.

Many spend their real money on virtual goods. It is hard to argue that a(n) (15)______ will never catch on when, for millions of people, it already has.
