1. anyone
anyone是一个不定代词,一般情况下用于肯定句中意思为“任何人”,用于否定句或疑问句中意为“某人”,改为肯定句时要变成someone。用形容词来修饰anyone等不定代词时需要放在不定代词的后面。

What about/How about. . . 意为“……怎么样 ”,常用来征求对方的意见或询问有关情况, about为介词, 其后接名词、代词或动名词。

too+ adj./adv.原形+ to do …意为“太……而不能……”,可以与so + adj./adv.原形+that+否定句或not adj./adv.原形+ enough to do进行同义句转换。
如: He is too young to go to school alone.
= He is so young that he can’t go to school alone.
= He is not old enough to go to school alone.

Annie: Just read quickly to get the main ideas. Don’t read word by word. Read word groups.
Jack: But I don’t understand many of the words. I have to use a dictionary.
Annie: Try to guess a word’s meaning by reading the sentences before and after it. You probably understand more than you think.
Jack: That sounds difficult!
Annie: Well, be patient. It takes time. You can become better by reading something you enjoy every day. The more you read, the faster you’ll be.
Language points
1. a little nervous
a little可以用来修饰形容词或副词,表示程度,意为“有一点……”,也可以加形容词或副词比较级,如a little bigger,还能用来修饰比较级的副词有even、much、still、far、a little、a bit、a lot等。
2. finish reading
finish意为“完成”,后面加名词或动名词。
3. sound bad
后文中还有sound difficult和become better,sound和become都是连系动词,后面要加adj.作它们的表语,构成系表结构。
4. word by word
意为“逐字地”,by这样的用法还可以用在词组one by one中,意思为“one after another,一个接一个地”。
5. have to
意为“不得不做……”,与must do相似,区别在于must强调主观意愿,have to强调客观情况下“必须做”。
6. try to
try to do sth. = try one’s best to do sth.意为“尽力去做……”,区分try to do和try doing,try doing意为“尝试做……”。
7. be patient
patient此处为adj.,意为“耐心的”,反义词为impatient;patient还能用作名词,意为“病人”。
如: Doctors should be patient with the patients.

8. It takes time.
take此处意为“花费(时间)”完成句型为“It takes sb. 时间段 to do sth.”,意为“做某事花了某人多长时间”,句中的it为形式主语,真正的主语为后面的to do sth.。

句型为“The+比较级……,the+比较级……”

How I Learned to Learn English
Last year, I did not like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke so quickly that I did not understand her most of the time. I was afraid to ask questions because of my poor pronunciation. I just hid behind my textbook and never said anything.
Then one day I watched an English movie called Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie! So I began to watch other English movies, too.
Although I could not understand everything the characters said, their body language and the expressions on their faces helped me to get the meaning. I also realized I could get the meaning by listening for just the key words. My pronunciation improved as well by listening to the conversations in English movies. I discovered that listening to something interesting is the secret to language learning. I also learned useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake” or “It serves you right.”
I did not understand these sentences at first. But because I wanted to understand the story, I looked them up in a dictionary.
Now I really enjoy my English class. I want to learn new words and more grammar so that I can have a better understanding of English movies.

1. so… that …
意为“如此…以至于…”,that后从句主要强调结果,区分so that+句子的用法,意为“以便,为了…”,强调目的。
如:He said so fast that I couldn’t catch him.
He said slowly so that everyone could catch him.
2. I was afraid to ask questions because of my poor pronunciation.
be afraid to do sth. 意为“害怕去做;不敢去做”
be afraid of 意为“害怕/担心…”,后接名词、代词或动名词形式。
如:Betty is afraid of the dark, so she is afraid to go out alone at night.
贝蒂怕黑, 所以她晚上不敢单独出去。
afraid的其他用法
(1) be afraid +that从句,意为“恐怕…; 担心…”, 常表示委婉的语气,that可省略。
I’m afraid that it will rain tomorrow.
我担心明天会下雨。
(2) I’m afraid so. 意为“恐怕如此”,多用于情景对话,对别人的提问作出推测式回答。
(3) I’m afraid not. 意为“恐怕不是”。
3. an English called Toy Story
在这个词组中called…用来作后置定语修饰前面的名词,也可以改为named…或with the name of…
如:a book named Harry Potter

4. fall in love with …
也可以说成 be in love with,意为“爱上…;与…相爱”。
5. begin to do sth.
begin与start的意思和用法相同,后面都可以加to do或doing,表示“开始做某事”。
6. Although…
although与though用法相似,意为“虽然,尽管”,引导让步状语从句,不能与but连用。
7. as well
as well常用作状语,意为“又;也”,相当于too或also,常位于句末,无须用逗号与句子分开。
如:I am going to London and my sister is going as well. (=going, too)
I not only play the guitar, I sing as well.
(=I also sing)
8. I discovered that listening to something interesting is the secret to language learning.
这句话为宾语从句,主句I discovered that,剩下的部分为从句。宾语从句中that引导陈述句,可省略。
从句中,doing sth. 作主语,谓语动词用单数。
the secret to sth 意为“……的秘密,秘诀”

句中like词性为介词,意为“像”,like还能用作动词,意为“喜欢”,后接to do或doing。
10. at first

仔细观察例句, 体会句中介词by的具体含义。

by是介词,后接名词、代词或动名词作宾语,意义较多,归纳如下:
(1) by表示方式、方法、手段等,意为“通过/用/靠 …… (而达到某种预期的目的)”, by +doing sth. 意为“通过做某事”在句中作方式状语。

(2) 表示位置移动, 意为“从……经过”
Ellen flew to Chicago by way of New York.
艾伦经由纽约飞往芝加哥。
(3) 表示位置, 意为“靠近; 在……旁边”

(4) 表示时间, 意为“在…之前; 到…为止; 不迟于”
