George Crum, inventor of the potato crisp, presents his creation to Cornelius Vanderbilt, 1853. The story, probably apocryphal, of the invention of the potato has it that a Vanderbilt, dining in Crum's restaurant demanded that his potatoes should be cut into thin slices and fried crisply. Crum made two unsuccessful attempts to comply, but with his third effort he won praise, and the potato crisp was born.
