Hollywood is looking East. And not just for ticket buyers. It is putting more and more Chinese elements into its productions. Chinese elements are playing an important role in Western films. Here, we list just a few of these elements.
The Chinese people
Hollywood has a history of casting Caucasian(白种人) actors for films where the race of the character is anything but white. Now, things are changing bit by bit. Kung fu superstar Bruce Lee was perhaps the first Chinese face Hollywood got familiar with. Action stars Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-fat and Jet Lee followed his footsteps. More and more ethnically Chinese faces were introduced to the silver screen around the world.
Symbols of China
Kung fu seems to be an element immediately associated with China. This also shows in films. The Karate Kid, starring Jackie Chan and actor Will Smiths son Jaden Smith, tells the story of how a boy, who was bullied at school, changed the course of his life after learning martial arts from a car mechanic (played by Chan). The film earned more than 1.6 billion yuan in ticket sales in China.
The Chinese language
Actor Bruce Willis showed his language skills in the film Red, where he said “A few years ago, I lived in Wuhan” in Chinese. This caused quite a stir in the theatres for Chinese audiences. Willis is not the only one who has spoken Chinese on the big screen. In Pearl Harbour, Alec Baldwin taught American soldiers how to say "I am an American " in Chinese. Nicolas Cage also delivered one of his most recognized lines “I prefer to shoot"in Chinese in Lord of War.

At the first exhibition of Henri Rousseau’s paintings in 1886, the public laughed out loud, and critics made fun of his original, unschooled style, one writing "Monsieur Rousseau paints with his feet, and his eyes covered.”
Despite heavy criticism throughout his life, Rousseau kept painting, confident in his gift. He never received formal training in the arts because his family was too poor. For more than twenty years, he worked at the Paris customs office. It wasn’t until the age of 40 that he took up the brush, teaching himself to paint by copying works at the Louvre and studying nature. “Nothing makes me so happy as to observe nature and to paint what I see.” he said.
Though his best-known paintings are of jungle scenes with monkeys, lions, and small woods, Rousseau never left France or saw a jungle. To paint foreign plants and animals, he relied on books, botanical gardens(植物园) in Paris, and his imagination. "When I go into the glasshouse and I see the strange plants of faraway lands,” he once said, "it seems to me that I enter into a dream.”
Rousseau claimed to have invented a new style of painting called the landscape-portrait, in which he paints a background view and then adds a person in the foreground later, as he did in Myself: Portrait-Landscape (1890).
Called a naive (天真) artist due to his childlike, untrained style, Rousseau painted colors one at a time, starting from the top and working his way down. While critics described his works as flat and inexact descriptions of nature, he earned the respect of artists like Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky, who thought Rousseau was onto something new.
Though his work was never accepted by the art world in his time, Rousseau’s paintings hang in museums around the world today. And Rousseau’s original approach to art has inspired countless artists to follow their own unique views.
28. Why did Rousseau have no formal training in arts
A. Because he preferred painting in his own way.
B. Because he was afraid of being criticized by others.
C. Because his family couldn’t afford the training.
D. Because there were more to be found in nature.
29. What can we learn about Rousseau
A. He was unwilling to develop a personal style.
B. He moved to a jungle to study nature.
C. He came from an artistic family.
D. He was indeed a self-taught painter.
30. What is Rousseau' s art like
A. It is black-and-white. B. It is simple and original.
C. It presents social reality. D. It employs persons in the background.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us
A .Rousseau ’s works have now been recognized.
B. Rousseau earned a good reputation in his time.
C. Rousseau encouraged young artists to follow his footsteps.
D. Rousseau’s paintings have hardly ever been shown in museums.

A group of scientists trained dogs to detect (发现) a crop disease called citrus greening. The disease has affected orange, lemon and grapefruit trees in the American states of Florida, California and Texas. The dogs can detect the disease weeks to years before it appears on tree leaves and roots, the researchers report. Using dogs is also faster, less costly and more exact than having people collect hundreds of leaves for lab analysis.
Timothy Gottwald is a researcher in the study. He said, “This technology is thousands of years old-the dog's nose. We've just trained dogs to hunt new prey: the bacteria that cause a very damaging crop disease.”
Citrus greening is caused by a kind of bacteria that is spread by a tiny insect that feeds on the leaves and stems of citrus trees. Once a tree is infected, there is no cure. The disease has also hurt citrus crops in Central and South America and Asia. In one experiment involving grapefruit trees in Texas, trained dogs were correct 95 percent of the time in telling the difference between newly infected trees and healthy ones. “The earlier you detect the disease, the better chance you have at stopping healthy trees being infected by removing infected ones,” Gottwald said.
Professor Matteo Garbelotto says the new research shows that dogs can detect an infection well before present methods. He has been involved in similar research but had no part in the new study.
Laura Sims is a plant scientist. She praised the steps taken to find out if the dogs were detecting the bacteria itself or a plant's reaction to an infection. To do that, the researchers infected different kinds of unrelated plants with the bacteria in a laboratory. The dogs were still able to pick out the infected plants.
Gottwald said, “You've seen dogs working in airports, detecting drugs and explosives. Maybe soon you will see them working on more farms.”
32.What does the text say about citrus greening
A.It mainly damages tree branches.
B.It's impossible to detect at an early stage.
C.Dogs can better detect it than humans.
D.Humans have to analyze tree roots to detect it.
33.How does a dog detect citrus greening
A.By tasting. B.By touching.
C.By observing. D.By sniffing.
34.Early detection of citrus greening enables farmers to________.
A.help infected trees to recover
B.keep it from spreading further
C.improve the quality of fruit
D.better protect infected trees
35.Which of the following statements reflects Gottwald's opinion
A.Dogs will take the place of humans to conduct risky jobs.
B.Trained dogs make no mistakes in citrus greening detection.
C.Dogs use plants' reaction to an infection to help with their detection.
D.Using dogs for citrus greening detection will be more widespread.

故把where改为when。
