The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services”. There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
24. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who __________.
A. has made a big fortune in life B. can afford to travel to different places
C. has a strong wish to be successful D. is willing to help those in need without pay
25. Tracy started her work as a volunteer ____________.
A. after she met Mother Teresa B. after she finished high school
C. when she was touring Calcutta D. when she was working in a hospital
26. Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer
A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa.
B. She was asked by Mother Teresa to do so.
C. She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example.
D. She had already had some experience.
27. What is Tracy’s “new idea”(Paragraph 2)of being a volunteer
A. Going abroad to help the sick. B. Doing simple things to help the poor.
C. Working in Mother Teresa’s home. D. Improving oneself through helping others.

American cities are similar to other cities around the world: In every country, cities reflect the values of the culture. American cities are changing, just as American society is changing.
After World War Ⅱ, the population of most large American cities decreased; however, the population in many Sun Belt cities increased. Los Angeles and Houston are cities where population shifts(转移) to and from the city reflect the changing values of American society. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, city residents(居民) became richer. They had more children so they needed more space. They moved out of their apartments in the city to buy their own homes. They bought houses in the suburbs(郊区).
Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in the 1950s are now adults. Many, unlike their parents, want to live in the cities. They continue to move to Sun Belt cities and older ones of the Northeast and Midwest. Many young professionals(专业人士,专门人才) are moving back into the city. They prefer the city to the suburbs because their jobs are there; or they just enjoy the excitement and possibilities that the city offers.
This population shift is bringing problems as well as benefits. A large number of poor people must leave their apartments in the city because the owners want to sell the buildings or make apartments for sale instead of for rent. In the 1950s, many poor people did not have enough money to move to the suburbs; now many of these same people do not have enough money to stay in the cities.
Only a few years ago, people thought that the older American cities were dying. Some city residents now see a bright, new future. Others see only problems and conflicts. One thing is sure: many dying cities are alive again.
28. What does the author think of cities all over the world
A. They are alive. B. They are hopeless.
C. They are similar. D. They are different.
29.Why did American city residents want to live in the suburbs after World War Ⅱ
A. Because older American cities were dying.
B. Because they were richer and needed more space.
C. Because cities had the worst parts of society.
D. Because they could hardly afford a life in the city.
30. According to the 4th paragraph, a great many poor people in American cities .
A. are faced with housing problems
B. are forced to move to the suburbs
C. want to sell their buildings
D. need more money for daily expenses
31. We can conclude from the text that .
A. American cities are changing for the worse
B. people have different views on American cities
C. many people are now moving from American cities
D. the population is decreasing in older American cities
D

作文Dear Fred,
Glad to hear from you. I'd like to tell you about our study tour “Into Xi'an” last weekend.
We set off at 7:00 am on Saturday. After arriving in Xi'an, we went to visit Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum, where we saw the wisdom of ancient Chinese people. In the evening we went out to watch some shadow plays, an ancient form of Chinese storytelling. The following day we climbed the famous Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Standing on top of it, we had a great view of the city. After that, we tasted some delicious local foods. It was 5:00 pm when we started home. I feel lucky to have spent such a lovely weekend in Xi'an relaxing and experiencing the local culture.
If you'd like to visit Xi'an, I would be willing to show you around.
Yours,
Li Hua
