孟菲斯市领导工人罢工,遭枪击,遇害时年仅39岁。
作为黑人领袖,他生前赢得美国各阶层人民的广泛尊重和爱戴,为世界所关注,于1964年获得“诺贝尔和平奖”。为纪念这位伟人,1983年1月,总统纳德·里根签署法令,规定从1986年起,每年1月的第三个星期一为美国的“马丁·路德·金日”(Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) ,并且将其定为法定假日。

简称“世贸中心”,位于美国纽约曼哈顿岛西南端,曾是纽约市最高、楼层最多的摩天大楼,为纽约市民乃至美国国民所自豪的地标建筑。 大楼于1966年开建,主体于1973年建成使用。
世贸大楼共110层,高达411米,是一个由两座并立的塔式摩天楼(被称作“双子塔”)、4幢办公楼和1幢旅馆组成的建筑群。其主体南楼和北楼双子塔采用
结构建筑,大楼墙面由铝板和玻璃窗组成。在其遭受恐怖袭击被摧毁之前,每年都吸引来自世界各地的无数游客前往参观。
2001年9月11日,恐怖分子劫持两架民航客机先后从不同方向撞向世贸中心的双子塔楼,两栋塔楼随后相继倒塌。
