There are many beautiful small lakeside towns in America for people to explore. If you want such a trip, here are some towns you can consider visiting.
Put-in-Bay, Ohio
This small Victorian town sits on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, with views of the water all around. Fewer than 200 people live there, though the population increases in most summers as people visit, drawn by the lake beaches and caves. The town has the worlds longest swim-up bar, at the Grand Islander Hotel.
Breaux Bridge, Louisiana
This town lies next to the shores (岸) of Lake Martin, the largest nesting area of wading birds in the US and one of the top spots for viewing them in the country. Just outside Lafayette, it shares much of the bigger city’s Louisiana charm. For a start, it calls itself the “Crawfish (淡水小龙虾) Capital of the World”, with a spring festival celebrating that status. Many people living there speak French.
Grand Lake, Colorado
It only has a few hundred people but tends to attract many more with its short distance to Rocky Mountain National Park and its general loveliness. The mountain town is considered the western gateway to the famous park so, of course, it has amazing views. It also has some lower-lying beauty, with the mirrored blue lake it’s named for and an old Western-style downtown with saloons, restaurants and galleries (画廊).
Marble Falls, Texas
In the heart of beautiful Texas Hill Country, Marble Falls owns not just one but five major lakes, including Lake LBJ, popular for swimming and messing about in boats. Most homes and the charming downtown are gathered around Lake Marble Falls, and there are views of the blue lake
at every turn.

Just because you’ve got “higher math” in your name doesn’t mean you’ll have a natural ability for math, but for 11-year-old Sanaa Hiremath, numbers are her special gift.
Sanaa suffered from autism (自闭症) at age 2. But she recently took home an award from Guinness World Records (GWR) for “largest mental arithmetic multiplication (心算乘法) problem”. When she was 7 years old, Sanaa was introduced to multiplication for the first time. She was able to immediately type in the right answers to math problems.
Yet due to her autism, Sanaa failed math in second grade at school. Even so, Sanaa’s parents are trying to make sure the life their daughter leads is that of a normal 11-year-old — and in many ways, Sanaa is like a normal pre-teen who enjoys music, swimming and bike-riding.
However, since conventional (传统的) education wasn’t suitable for her special needs, it was decided home-schooling would be Sanaa’s best choice. Although she’s made surprising progress, her parents prefer to keep her at grade level with kids of her age as they try to maintain a careful balance between Sanaa’s special talents and the language, social, and motor skills with which she continues to struggle. “Whether it is her speech, fine motor skills, or every little thing we take for granted in our daily life, she has worked hard for all of those. She is now able to do things which were considered impossible during her early childhood,” Sanaa’s father, Priya, told GWR.
For Sanaa and others like her, when solving difficult math problems, a brilliant mind must be multiplied by unconventional wisdom, which means it’s up to the educators to learn to ask the right questions. Albert Einstein once said of conventional education, “The true art of questioning is to discover what the pupil does know or is capable of knowing.”
4. What made Sanaa known to the public
A. Her talent for mental arithmetic.
B. Her excellent performance in math at school.
C. Her experience of winning an award at age 7.
D. Her act of helping kids with mental health problems.
5. Which of the following can best describe Sanaa’s parents
A. Honest and brave.
B. Active and friendly.
C. Positive and thoughtful.
D. Strict and knowledgeable.
6. What do Priya’s words suggest .
A. Sanaa’s efforts lead to great progress.
B. Sanaa will lead a relaxing life in the fixture.
C. Sanaa can attend school like a normal kid now.
D. Sanaa’s parents always have high hopes for her.
7. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph
A. We should value the hard work of educators.
B. Albert Einstein’s educational idea is advanced.
C. The best way to learn is to learn from your mistakes.
D. Teaching should be carried out according to students’ abilities.
C
Those who live in many parts of the eastern United States will experience an unusual phenomenon every 13 or 17 years. Depending on where you live, insects called cicadas (蝉) come out of the ground in huge numbers. But don’t worry. They don’t hurt people or pets. They’re just here to party.
It’s one of the loudest insect parties you’ll ever see — or hear. When large numbers of adult insects appear, the collective noise made by males can reach 90 decibels (分贝). “Where the cicadas get together, it will be spectacular,” Michael Raupp told Science News for Students in 2013. He is a professor at the University of Maryland. Across some small areas, cicada concentrations may reach 1 trillion insects per square mile. That’s like having nearly 4 million cicadas emerge from an area of the ground the size of your bedroom floor.
There are more than 3,000 species of these insects. The best-known species in North America are periodical cicadas. These 5-centimeter-long insects spend more than 99 percent of their life underground. There, they take in nutrition from the roots of certain trees. These underground young are known as nymphs. Adult cicadas live for only two to four weeks. During that brief time, the females, lay eggs in the young branches of trees. After a few weeks, the young drop to the ground. At once, each tiny nymph begins digging holes to go underground.
You might think that large numbers of cicadas taking in nutrition from the roots of trees for an extended period would harm plants. But Raupp said, “It’s a wonder that we don’t see more damage.” And to date, research has not shown that the under-ground activities of cicadas cause significant damage to their hosts.
In fact, cicadas probably help the environment, instead of hurting it. Raupp noted that they could dig up the ground and loosen the soil (松土). That not only helps air reach plant roots but also helps water move through the soil deeply.
8. What will happen in many parts of the USA every 13 or 17 years
A. Many pets will get sick because of cicadas.
B. A festival about insects will be celebrated.
C. A large number of cicadas will appear.
D. Some kinds of insects will die out.
9. What does the underlined word “spectacular” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Impressive. B. Dangerous.
C. Strange. D. Silent.
10. Why do young cicadas dig holes
A. To keep away from danger.
B. To go underground to lay eggs.
C. To stay warm in cold weather.
D. Do find plant roots to feed on.
11. Which point would Michael Raupp agree with
A. Noise pollution is mostly caused by female cicadas.
B. Cicadas can actually help plants grow better.
C. Cicadas will do harm to certain trees.
D. Nymphs are used to living in trees.
D
When COVID-19 closed gyms and put school sports on hold, many teens looked for other ways to stay active. Some took up at-home yoga or running. For high school student Michelle Hua, that wasn’t enough. She wanted to know if her movements were in the right position while practicing at home. So she invented an app to identify (识别) her movements. It can tell her whether she is performing- them correctly.
Many movement-identifying apps use models of skeletons (骨骼) to track movements. But that method is not very correct because those apps have to know where the head, shoulders, arms, legs, feet, etc. are in the video. However, Michelle used silhouettes (轮廓) to track movements. With silhouettes, the program wouldn’t need information about the location of the body parts. “It only needs to separate the shape of the human — regardless of where the head, arms, and legs are — from the background it is in,” she explains.
Michelle designed a special program. This is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) program that can learn from data. Michelle’s trained hers using data from different sets of movement files. Those thousands of videos show people in all sorts of motions, from sitting to jumping and running. She made great efforts to make sure that her program analyzed them, drew silhouettes and then learned what those silhouettes were doing.
The program now can recognize everything from brushing your hair to chewing gum. But, at first, rhythmic gymnastics wasn’t in any of those movement data sets with which her program trained. So the teen took videos of her performing and trained her program with her own data. Her new app knows what each exercising silhouette should be doing. What’s more, the app can help users correct their position while they are taking exercise. As is known, if done improperly, exercise can be dangerous and cause physical injuries for people. She hopes people will use her app to avoid those and exercise more effectively.
12. Why did Michelle invent the app
A. To improve her exercise at home.
B. To get in touch with her classmates.
C. To remind her to stay active at home.
D. To ease her stress caused by COVID-19.
13. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The advantages of Michelle’s app.
B. New ways of identifying body parts.
C. The development of the new invention.
D. Fierce competition between different sports apps.
14. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to
A. Some AI programs.
B. Movements in each video.
C. Different kinds of sports skills.
D. Silhouettes of people around Michelle.
15. What can be learned about the new program from the last paragraph
A. Its users are mainly teenagers.
B. Its final movement data sets are quite limited.
C. It can teach people how to find training partners.
D. It can help users do exercise in a proper and safe way.

My room was a mess. Clothes were everywhere: all over the bed, on the floor, on the chairs, and so on. I had promised my mom that I would clean up my room, trying to make it tidy. But as a matter of fact, I’d always have an excuse for not cleaning it. The excuses that I commonly used were: “I’m busy. I can’t do it right now,” “I have to go to Kristen’s house,” or “I have to get ready for soccer.”
No matter how hard my mom tried, she couldn’t get me to clean up my room. Then she did something completely unexpected. One afternoon I was going to the supermarket with my friends, and I went up to my room to get my purse (钱包). My friends were waiting for me outside of my house. It took me about five minutes to know that I had lost it somewhere in the piles and piles of clothes. After another five minutes of looking for it, I started to get very worried. I called my mom for help.
She rushed upstairs and asked what was wrong. I told her that I couldn’t find my purse. And I told her that I needed it badly, for all of my pocket money was in it! She suggested that I put some of my things away so that I might see it lying on the ground or something. I started to do that. But my purse still couldn’t be seen.
Twenty minutes had passed, and any minute my friends were going to leave without me. I broke out in a sweat (汗水). A small voice seemed to be in my head — laughing at me, “Look! Now you are suffering from your bad habit!” Just when I was about to lose patience, my mom told me to clean up more of the clothes so I could find it then. I took a deep breath and continued.
Paragraph 1:
To my disappointment, I tried but with no luck!

Dear Mandy,
I’m feeling bad about being addicted to computer games these days. Not knowing what to do, I’m writing to turn to you.
I often feel sleepy because I have been staying up late to play computer games on weekends in the past few months. It was so hard to concentrate on my studies that I failed some exams. I had tried to do something to solve the problem, but failed. So I wonder if you could kindly give me some advice. Thanks in advance for your help.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Paragraph 1:
To my disappointment, I tried but with no luck! Then my mom said if I picked up the last few of clothes, I would see my purse. As soon as I finished cleaning up every piece of clothing, a broad smile spread across her face. I asked her what was so funny. She just burst out laughing. It made me a little angry. I asked her to tell me what happened. She pointed to my room and said, “Look, your room is clean now!”
Paragraph 2:
As I looked around my room, I noticed it was truly clean. For one second, I just couldn’t believe my eyes. Then I asked my mom where my purse was. “It’s at the front door, waiting for you,” she said. I excitedly rushed downstairs. When I returned to my room after shopping that day, I took a closer look at it. I found it felt fresh and seemed larger and brighter. It gave me a better feeling. Since that day, I’ve stopped making excuses and kept my room tidy.
