Around the World in 80 Days! --By Jules Verne
"We set out for Dover and Calais in ten minutes," Fogg announced. A puzzled grin appeared in Passepartout's round face: clearly he had not understood. "Monsieur is going to leave home " "Yes," replied Phileas Fogg. "We are going around the world." Passepartout's eyes widened, he raised his eyebrows, held up his hands and seemed about to collapse. "Round the world!" he murmured. "In eighty days," responded Mr. Fogg. "So we don't have a moment to lose," "But the cases " gasped Passepartout. "We won't have any cases," Fogg replied. "Only a bag with two shirts and three pairs of stockings for me in it, and the same for you. We'll buy our clothes on the way. Bring down my raincoat
and traveling cloak, and some strong shoes, although we will do little walking. Hurry up!"
Passepartout tried to reply, but he could not. He mechanically began to make the preparations for departure. Around the world in eighty days! Was his master a fool No. Was this a joke, then They were going to Dover; good! To Calais; good again! After all, Passepartout, who had been away from France for five years, wouldn't be sorry to set foot in his own country again. Perhaps they would go as far as Paris, and it would do his eyes good to see Paris once again.
By eight o'clock Passepartout had packed the bag. Then, still feeling troubled, he went down to see
Mr. Fogg. Mr. Fogg was completely ready. Under his arm was a book containing timetables showing the arrival and departure of steam boats and trains. He took the bag, opened it, and slipped into it a roll of notes. "You haven't forgotten anything " Fogg asked. "Nothing, monsieur." "My raincoat and cloak " "Here they are." "Good!"
"Take this bag," Fogg said, handing it to Passepartout. "Take good care of it because there are twenty thousand pounds in it." Passepartout nearly dropped the bag, as if the twenty thousand pounds were in gold, and weighed him down. Passepartout and his master then left the house and at the end of Saville Row they took a taxi and drove rapidly to Charing Cross.

The proposal for a new Indonesian capital city has been on the cards ever since the country gained independence from the Dutch in 1945. The political and economic crises which followed have long delayed the plan, but current president, Joko Widodo, now appears determined to make the move a reality. The government officially confirmed that the capital will be moved from Jakarta to a new location within Kalimantan, part of the island of Borneo in Indonesia.
A number of factors are likely to have influenced the decision to forge ahead with the move, but it seems likely that Jakarta’s environmental problems are chief among them. Built on swampy(沼泽的)
ground, Jakarta is sinking, in some parts at a rate of 20cm a year. Experts predict that most of northern Jakarta could sink beneath the sea by 2050. What’s more, Jakarta is rarely mentioned without reference to its extreme levels of traffic jams and air pollution. There could be other reasons too. John McCarthy, an expert on land use in Kalimantan at the Australian National University Crawford School points to a potential desire to spread wealth throughout Indonesia. “Jakarta is the most highly developed core of Indonesia which sucks all the money and opportunities from other areas,” he says. “I think there’s logic in splitting the economic and political capital.”
But the location of this new political center is proving controversial. Some environmental groups are concerned that the chosen location in East Kalimantan will increase logging and destruction of nearby forests, home to orangutans and other endangered species. Indonesia’s planning minister previously told reporters that the new capital will be a sustainable “forest city” that won’t result in the
destruction of protected forests, but how exactly this would work has not yet been explained.
Despite these challenges, the government is now putting its plan in motion. But even if this new capital is built, Jakarta will still need protection. Home to ten million people, the city simply can’t be neglected.
28. What is the Indonesian government’s new plan
A. Building a forest city. B. Developing resources of Borneo. C. Electing a new president. D. Relocating the capital city.
29. What may be the main reason for the government’s decision
A. To reduce land pollution.
B. To seek better living environment.
C. To make full use of swampy ground.
D. To balance the economic growth between cities.
30. What worries some people about the government’s choice
A. It may cost a lot of money. B. It may destroy the local ecosystem.
C. It may disrupt many residents’ normal life. D. It may cause the decline of the old capital city.
31. What does the underlined word “neglected” probably mean
A. Ignored. B. Ranked. C. Repaired. D. Damaged.
D
In a 1993 experiment, researchers reported that college students who listened to a Mozart sonata
(奏鸣曲)for a few minutes just before taking a test did better on the test than students listening to relaxation instructions or sitting in silence. Music of Mozart, the investigators concluded, seemed to
cause changes in the brain that "warm up" neural(神经)connections, thereby improving thinking. But
the gain in performance--widely publicized as the "Mozart effect"--lasted only 15 minutes and proved difficult to repeat. Rather than causing a real change in ability, Mozart seemed to improve excitement and mood, producing better concentration on the test.
Research suggests that to produce lasting gains in intelligence-test scores, involvement must be long-lasting and involve children's active participation. Consequently, Glenn Schellenberg, psychologist from University of Toronto, wondered, can music lessons enhance intelligence
Schellenberg recruited 132 six-year-old children for formal lessons. First, the children took an intelligence test and were rated for social maturity. Next, the children were randomly assigned to one of four experimental conditions. Two were music groups; one received piano lessons and the other voice lessons. The third group took drama lessons--a condition that shed light on whether intellectual gains were unique to musical experiences. The fourth group--a no-lessons control--was offered music lessons the following year. After 36 weeks of lessons, the children's intelligence and social maturity were assessed again.
All four groups showed gains in intelligence-test performance, probably because the participants had just entered grade school, which usually leads to an increase in intelligence test scores. But the two music groups consistently gained more than the control groups. Their advantage, though just a few points, extended across many mental abilities, including verbal and spatial skills and speed of thinking. At the same time, only the drama group improved in social maturity.
In sum, active, sustained musical experiences can lead to small increases in intelligence among
6-year-olds. But other enrichment activities, such as reading, science, math, and chess programs, may have similar benefits. All demand that children invest far more time and effort than they would in listening to a Mozart sonata.
32. What did the 1993 experiment show
A. Mozart effect will change students' ability to study. B. Music of Mozart improves students' concentration.
C. Listening to Mozart will produce lasting gains in test scores.
D. Brief exposure to Mozart results in lifelong intellectual gains.
33. Why did Glenn Schellenberg conduct his experiment A. To rate the children for social maturity.
B. To give 132 six-year-olds formal music lessons.
C. To see if music lessons can improve children's intelligence.
D. To test the Mozart effect on children's intelligence and social maturity.
34. What does the underlined phrase "shed light on" probably mean
A. confuse B. clarify C. conceal D. compare
35. Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage A. What is the Mozart Effect
B. Tune Your Brain with Mozart
C. Mozart for Newborns: A Bright Beginning
D. Can Musical Experiences Enhance Intelligence

It’s a common practice to take off your shoes when you enter your home. Many do this to prevent dirt and bacteria from getting inside. 36.
Technically, yes. As you walk around outside, your shoes pick up bacteria, viruses and dirt. A 2017
study showed that more than 26 percent of the sole(s
底)of shoes worn in homes contained Clostridium
difficile, or C. diff, a common healthcare-associated infection that can be deadly.
But if that worries you, get this--the average person has more than 100 trillion microbes(微生物) in and on their body. 37. And if your pets go outside, they’re bringing in dirty stuff on their paws and fur. Thankfully, most of the bacteria on your body and in your home are
harmless. Same with the stuff you track in on your shoes.
38. Take them off if you’ve got little kids crawling around on the floors, who may then put their fingers in their mouths. Disinfect if someone in your home is sensitive to
infection. And since pollen(花粉)can be transferred from shoes to floors, and especially carpets, kick
off your shoes if someone at home has allergies.
39. Each of your feet has about 125,000 sweat gland(s and any sweat on your feet can be transferred to carpets. Wet carpets, in turn, trap dirt.
汗腺)on the sole,
In the end, the choice of whether or not to go shoeless is yours. 40. But whether your shoes are on or off, you need to clean your home as often as possible.
A. But is that really an issue
B. Sweat can also contain microbes.
C. Your home is covered in bacteria, too.
D. Despite this, other people think this is unnecessary.
E. Some people just like the feel of walking around in bare feet.
F. Still, there are some cases where it may make sense to remove your shoes.
G. If you’re really determined to cut down on dirt, keep your slippers on rather than going barefoot.

“No 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle(跨栏)and ...” Cheers broke out.
“Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles!” The crowd went wild.
“County championships(锦标赛), here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her green track spikes
They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we’re taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.
“Don’t forget, guys,” said Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at
Hidden Park.”
Next weekend couldn’t come soon enough. Jobie smiled with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she’d ever leaped before. And it wasn’t long before everything in her path was a hurdle: flowerpots in her front yard, sidewalk cracks on the way to the bus stop and even her little sister, Teka!
The day of Marisol’s party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her blue shorts, an old track T-shirt
from her dad, and her lucky spikes. “Perfect.” She smiled at herself in the mirror.
The party was under way when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do some practice.
“Jobie!” Two of Jobie’s teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they yelled. “You have to try the slide.”
Jobie looked toward the party area. Suddenly, she saw it. The biggest slide she had ever seen was
on the far side of the park. Smiling kids zoomed down the slide at unspeakable speeds. Without thinking twice, Jobie took off her spikes and dashed(猛冲)toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the
sky, but she reached the top in no time, closed her eyes and let go.
Jobie couldn’t get enough. She tried again and again. When it was finally time to go home, she unwillingly made her way back to the track where she’d left her shoes.
Paragraph 1:
As she eyed the area from a distance, panic set in.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, Jobie turned up in a new pair of spikes for the championships.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

A puzzled grin appeared in Passepartout's round face: clearly he had not understood.可知。
You haven't forgotten anything " Fogg asked. "Nothing, monsieur." "My raincoat and cloak " "Here they are." "Good!"
They were going to Dover; good! To Calais; good again! After all, Passepartout, who had been away from France for five years, wouldn't be sorry to set foot in his own country again. 可知。
33. C Glenn Schellenberg

53. A 固定搭配be unknown to sb.。

As she eyed the area from a distance, panic set in. Jobie picked up the pace, her heart pounding louder the closer she got. When she reached the place where she’d left them, her heart sank. “My lucky spikes are gone!” she screamed. Jobie’s teammates helped her search the whole park, but there was no sign of her lucky spikes. “So long, gold.” Jobie was hopeless, tears welling up in her eyes.
The next day, Jobie turned up in a new pair of spikes for the championships. Uneasily, Jobie shuffled her feet. For her, the loss of her lucky spikes meant the loss of the gold medal. “Next up is the girls’ 100-meter hurdles,” said the announcer. Jobie took several deep breaths, and her teammates encouraged her as she walked down to the starting line. Feeling inspired, Jobie decided to try her best. In a flash, Jobie was off and cleared hurdle after hurdle. She got closer and closer, and cheers broke out. Wearing a wide smile, Jobie whispered, “No lucky spikes. Lucky me.”

W: Do you like going to live football matches
M: Oh, yes, I love it.
W: Is it better than watching them on TV
M: Well, you don't really see as much as you do on TV.

M: Good morning. This is City Bus Company.
W: Good morning. I wonder if you could help me. I've lost my handbag.
M: Oh, when did it happen Are you sure you've lost it on our bus
W: Well, yesterday afternoon I went home from work on the No.22 bus. When I got off the bus, I left my handbag on the bus.
M: Can you describe it
W: Well, it's a brown fur handbag. Err, there is a bank card and some change in it.
M: I am afraid we haven't got anything like that. Perhaps someone took it away when you got off the bus. But we'll try our best to look for it for you.
W: Thank you very much.

M: Mom, I have something to say. Can Spotty be in the family picture, too
W: Oh, he cannot. You know, dogs are pets; they are not family.
M: But Spotty is older than I am!
W: So what That still doesn't make him a human.
M: Sometimes it seems like he can talk. Why not regard him as a member of our family
W: I said no, so the answer is no.
M: What if we put a hat on him
W: Why would you want to do that
M: Because if he puts a hat, he'll just look like my little brother.
W: You're really attached to him, aren't you
M: Yes! I like him. And he's like a part of the family, too.
W: All right, he may be in the photo, but no hat!

M: Jenny, in another interview we were talking about foods that we don't like. Now let's talk about activities or things we don't like to do.
W: Okay.
M: Washing dishes, ironing clothes, mowing the lawn, things like that.
W: Alright.
M: Are there any other activities you really dislike doing
W: Well, you mentioned washing dishes. I don't like that one.
M: Oh, really
W: I'd much rather mow the lawn than wash dishes.
M: Why
W: I guess, it's just the idea of touching dirty plates that everyone ate off and then they sat at the sink for a couple of hours. And, it grosses me out.
M: Yeah. That's interesting because I'm actually… like… I don't like cooking. I hate to cook but I don't mind doing the clean-up.

Everyone has a natural sleep routine. You go to bed and wake up at a certain time. But everyone's routine is not the same. Some people--the early birds--go to bed early at night (around 9:00 or 10:00 pm). In the morning, they wake up easily and are energetic. Others--the night owls--stay awake late (until midnight or later). For them, it is difficult to wake up early. What do we know about early birds and night owls Here is what studies show.
Teenagers are natural night owls. Also, most need nine to ten hours' sleep a night. But in many places, the school or work day starts at 8:00 am. For this reason, only one in five teenagers sleeps enough. More early birds get good grades in school, but night owls do better on some intelligence tests, according to a study of 1,000 Spanish teens. People with high scores on these tests usually get good jobs.
