Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. "Daddy," she said softly, "why won't you come back "
Instead of gradually adjusting to her father's death, Desiree refused to accept it. "Daddy will be home soon," she'd tell her mother. "He's at work." When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father. "I miss you, Daddy," she'd say. "When will you come back " Desiree's situation made her mother worried.
Days later, it was Ken's birthday. "How will I send him a card " Desiree asked her mother. "How about if we tie a letter to a balloon," her mother said, "and send it up to heaven " Desiree's eyes immediately lit up.
Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid. Desiree and her father had often watched it. The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated (口述) a letter to her Dad. "Daddy, happy birthday, I love you and miss you," she rattled off (快速说). "I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January."
Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree let the balloon fly. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till it disappeared. "Now Dad's going to write back to me," Desiree said confidently.
Every day after they'd flown the balloon, Desiree asked her mother, "Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet " Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.

When Emerson and his dad arrived at the information board at the trail head, they took a map to use on their hike. "I don't ever know if we need a map," said Emerson's dad, "because we'll be following the trail the entire time. Besides, we're just going up a mountain, so as long as we keep walking up, we'll reach the top." They headed up the trail, excited for the view they were sure to see from the top.
After twenty minutes of hiking, Emerson saw a giant stone alongside the trail, and his eyes opened wide. He loved climbing on giant stones. He threw down his backpack and climbed up onto it.
As Emerson climbed, his dad told stories about spending a summer hiking in Alaska. "One time, we got lost in the wilderness for hours. Luckily, we climbed a hill and spotted our car from high up, so we were able to find our way back."
Emerson and his dad continued up the steep trail, stopping every now and then to drink water and watch an animal. After a particularly steep section, the trail passed by an open field. Nestled between the tall trees were stones of all shapes and sizes. A giant one was deeper in the woods, far from the trail. It was too good to pass by, so Emerson insisted on hiking to it. Emerson's dad didn't want to stray (迷失) from the trail. "Please, Dad!" Emerson begged. Unwillingly, his dad agreed. Pushing aside branches and stepping over roots and rocks, they made their way to the big stone. After Emerson climbed for a while, he and his dad wanted to get back.
They hadn't gone far when they realized they couldn't find the trail. Emerson's dad scanned the map and the surrounding forest, looking for signs of the trail, but he didn't see any.

That night, I quarreled with my mother, then stormed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket, I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.
At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!
The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, "Hey little girl, you want to eat a bowl "
"But …but I do not carry money …" I shyly replied.
"Okay, I'll treat you." the seller said, "come in, I will cook you a bowl."
A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, I cried.
"What is it " He asked.
"Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!" I said as I wiped my tears. "Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She is cruel!!"
The seller sighed, "Girl, why did you think so Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were little, why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom "
I was really surprised after hearing that.
Why did I not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has raised me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little.

Many years ago, my father, who was 80 at that time, arrived for his regular two-week visit at my home in Karachi. He lived with my elder brother in Lahore most of the time and for ten years had stuck to his habit of going for an-hour-long morning walk to keep fit. In Lahore, he would walk around a park that is quite close to my brother's house. Naturally, he was keen to continue his morning walk while with us in Karachi.
Our preferred park is a 2 km walk from my house and it has a 1 km walking track. I could not drive him there every day as I have to leave for the office at the same time he wanted to set out. Since there are hardly any footpaths in Karachi, my father said he was delighted to walk on the road as he was certain there wouldn't be much traffic in the morning.
Though I kept him informed that our house was near the park and was made of red bricks in case he got lost, I was still less confident so I suggested it would be safer if he changed his walk time to the evening. That way I could take him to the park after work. However, my father—a determined person—said that he could not change his routine for just a few days and insisted that he would be leaving the house every day at 7 am and returning by 8 am. He started doing this and stuck firmly to his schedule. So one day when he had not returned by 8:30 am, my wife, Qaisa, phoned me in a panic. Worried, I immediately drove home, taking the same route that my father would have taken for his walk.
Not spotting him anywhere, I went to the police station to report my father's disappearance. The station house officer advised me to wait until midnight before filling the report. Since it was only 10 am, I drove back to the park, in the hope of discovering some trace, but in vain. Totally at a loss for what to do next, I returned home and waited impatiently, walking back and forth in the house.

I am a proud mother of three children. My last little baby was born in the middle of August and her name is Aida.
Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend's mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had a loom (织布机) and showed me how to knit (编织) a scarf. After I learned some skills, she gave me a small loom with her half done project.
I was looking after my sweet little baby at home, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I bought a full loom set and tons of thread (线) and started to make woolen hats since it was winter.
I realized the homeless population in my town. I started to give away my hats to the people asking for food outside the food shop down the street I live in.
My oldest son Siddhartha got involved in the project and made a hat as well. I found that there was a non-profit organization on the way home, which made masks for farm workers and was asking for winter warm clothing donations. I made a lot of woolen hats and gave them to the organization which would hand them out to farm workers.
Then I, together with my son, made woolen hats for everyone in my family as Christmas gifts, and gave woolen hats to all my neighbors I was close to. There was a new family that moved in down the street. I did not know them very well but why not break the ice with some handmade gifts So I made hats for the mom and one-year-old baby. I knocked on the door and handed the gifts over and my neighbor was so happy to receive them. We talked happily and I learned she worked in a hospital.

My dad, Woodrow T. Grant of Billings, was a nice man who didn't talk too much. He used to work as a mechanic fixing army planes, but he was sent back after getting injured. Later, he opened a garage with his friend, who sold it behind his pack. People took advantage of him, but he just turn down a favor.
That's why I felt more than a little confused when a policeman called my office, asking me to pick him up at the station. The old man was found walking alone along the high way. When a police patrol car stopped him, he explained that he was travelling to Nabraska to claim(认领)his million dollars.
"What million dollars " I asked Dad, who was sitting quietly in the passengers* seat as we drove home.
Dad took out a wrinkled (折皱的)letter and read, "We are now authorized(授权)to pay one million dollars to Woodrow T. Grant of Billings, Montana "
I never knew dad wanted to be a millionaire. I asked him what he would do with the prize money, to which he replied that he wanted a new truck. His driver's license has expired(失效)fifteen years ago when he reached his seventies.
I knew that the letter was a trick, but the old man was as stubborn as a mule. He even slept with that, stupid letter in his hand. He memorized it word for word. I didn't think he could memorize anything anymore. He wouldn't stay at home either, but ventured(冒险)out onto the highway again and again, until the police sent him back. In the end, I had to give up. I called in sick at work and the two of us set out in my car to claim his prize.
We travelled past several states. Dad remained silent, while I found it hard to control my temper. Finally, I decided to ask the question, "Why on earth do you need a million dollars for a stupid truck " Dad replied, "The rest is for you. I wanted to leave you something." His words made me speechless.

A Mother's Love
My mum only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.
There was one day during elementary school when my mum came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.
How could she do this to me I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, "Your mum only has one eye!"
I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mum to just disappear. I confronted her that day and said, "If you're only going to make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die "
My mum did not respond. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.
I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.
Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me for years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren.
When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, "How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!"
And to this, my mother quietly answered, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address." And she was soon out of sight.
One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.
My neighbours said that she died. I did not shed a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

One day, 3,000 miles away, Wade was on a duck hunt when suddenly something in the bush caught his eye. Curious, he approached to find a silver balloon, with a piece of paper at the end of the string, wrapped in plastic. Taking it home, Wade read the touching lines to his wife Donna. She was deeply moved. With tears in her eyes, Donna decided to help Desiree. The couple went to buy a birthday card and a book of The Little Mermaid, and then she began to write a letter to Desiree.
Paragraph 2:
Desiree's fifth birthday came and later in the afternoon, a package arrived. Looking at the unfamiliar return address, Desiree's mother was confused. Suddenly an idea struck her: the balloon! She opened the parcel and found a card with "For a Dear Daughter". Her heart raced. She rushed to Desiree's room and showed her the letter. "It's from Daddy!" Desiree jumped with joy, asking her mother to read it for her. "Happy birthday, my little angel!" Her mother began. A big tear began to trickle down Desiree's cheek.

A week later, her father once again asked Jenny after her story. "Jenny, you love me, don't you Give me your pearls, okay " "Daddy, why must you ask for the pearls " Jenny refused again. "Not only did I finish all those chores, but also I spent the dollar bill given for my birthday just to pay for it". They both fell into silence, only with a bunch of moonlight shining into the silent room. Then her father smiled, comforting her with a warm hug. "That's okay, darling. Good night, my little one." Afraid of affecting her sleep, Father then left.
Paragraph 2
Several days later, when Jenny's father came in to read her a story as usual, she was surprised to find something under the story book, which turned out to be the necklace. "Daddy, now you can have it." Jenny raised her head, "you know, I love you." Her father was moved beyond words. Slowly, he pulled something out of his pocket. It was a pretty necklace with real pearls shining. "The more you are willing to give, the more you are likely to receive. That's the real meaning of sharing and giving." Her father helped Jenny put on the pearls. "You know, I love you, little one."

Para 1:
After an hour of being lost, Emerson started to get tired and worried. Afraid of being unable to find the way out, he sat on the ground, tears rolling down his cheeks. "If only I had followed your advice, we wouldn't have been trapped in this place." Hearing this, his dad patted his shoulder and encouraged him, "Getting lost is very common in hiking. Believe me, if we insist on looking for the trail, we will find it." Dad's encouragement seemed to give Emerson confidence, and he stood up to search for the trail.
Para 2:
Suddenly, his dad had an idea. "Let's keep walking up! The top of the mountain is rather narrow. We can look for the trail there." Up they went, pushing their way through the thick rush. Finally, they found themselves on a flat, grassy area overlooking a steep wide valley. Not far from them, they could see where the trail came out. Emerson looked down at his scratches from the thorns and grinned. "Hiking is a lot more fun when you stay on the trail."
4. 答案:
Paragraph 1: Just at that moment, many memories came back into my mind. When I was ill, she was always the one taking care of me. When I had trouble with my study, she never lost faith in me and encouraged me to keep going. When I arrived home during the weekend, she always prepared my favorite food. All her kindness came back to me. I should be grateful for all she had done for me. I realized I should go back home immediately and say sorry to my mother.
Paragraph 2: When arriving home, I saw my mother sitting at the dinner table, worried and tired. She must have been looking for me everywhere. I was ready for her anger and shouts. However, before I could apologize, my mother saw me and gently said, "Oh honey, thank God you're back! Come inside. You are probably very hungry. I cooked your favorite noodles, come and eat while they are still hot..." No longer able to control myself, I cried in her arms. "I'm sorry, mom. Please forgive me." I whispered to her through tears, extremely ashamed of myself.
5. 答案:
At 10:35 am the doorbell rang and my father stood outside the door smiling, accompanied by a young man. I hugged my father tightly and affectionately. Enormously relieved, the young man told me that my father had lost his way while returning home after the morning walk. The only description he could provide was that my house was near the park and that the house was made of red bricks. With much effort, and in almost two hours' searching, the young man was able to locate my house. He expressed great relief at getting my father home.
After knowing what had happened, I showed my appreciation of the young man's kindness. I invited him inside to join us for a cup of tea. The man refused politely and said sincerely that he felt so delighted to have brought my father safely home to me and that he did not require further thanks. Then he drove the car away without even sharing his name and I have not seen him again. This kind act has a lasting influence on me. I always give others a helping hand if possible, even so many years later.
6. 答案:
The new neighbor had limited knitting skills so she asked me to create sweaters for kids in hospital together. I agreed to the act of kindness because I had always been doing such similar things. In my spare time from babysitting, I was making children's sweaters. A month later, I had done 20. My new neighbor, my son and I sent our gifts to the hospital. We explained our purpose, handed out sweaters to the parents and wished their kids a quick recovery. They all thanked me for our gifts.
Later, my new neighbor wanted to learn my knitting skills to serve the elderly in the nursing home. She really admired my skills, and I was glad to teach her, so she bought a set of loom just like mine. She quickly mastered the skills. Together we made winter hats for the old people in the nursing home. We soon made enough hats and gave them away to the old people, who needed these things badly. I hope that our gifts will make their life a little more comfortable. I'm happy to continue spreading this love to more people.
7. 答案:
The following day, we arrived at our destination. What I had foreseen happened: it was a complete trick/cheat. There was no prize money at all. Dad's dream of becoming a millionaire was already broken. The hot weather in Nebraska had crept upon us unawares, and the atmosphere hung heavy over my leaden heart. As for Dad, this bad news seemed to have overpowered him. He leaned his head on his hand like a downhearted old horse bowing beneath the violence of the storm. Looking at my crestfallen father, I made a solution to myself.
On our way back, we stopped at a truck-dealer I walked my Dad to his favorite pickup truck. Looking at the truck, my Dad wore an expression of pleasant surprise on his face. I. told him that we would finish our trip in this truck because he had already got the best prize---me, his beloved son. He burst out laughing and gave me a hug. A sudden shower of rain drove the hot sun away and the dull air changed into a fitful breeze. We drove home in our new truck, laughing and talking like the old days.

Paragraph 1:
My dearest son,
I think of you all the time and I'm sorry that I came to your house and scared your children. I had never thought my visit would bring so much unhappiness to you. However, I was really so happy when I heard you were coming for the reunion. I missed you day and night. But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you. I'm terribly sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up.
Paragraph 2:
You see, when you were very little, you got into a terrible accident, as a result of which you lost one of your precious eyes. As a mother, I couldn't stand watching you having to grow up with just one eye. It was too much for you—a young soul to endure such a cruel fact and a possible future full of challenges. So I gave you mine. I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye.
With all my love to you.
Your mother
