Many have seen koalas. This kind of animal that only lives in Australia is listed among Australia’s endangered animals. A recent survey showed that if we don’t take action to protect them, koalas will disappear in New South Wales, Australia in 2050. According to Australian Koala Foundation, there were only fewer than 80,000 koalas in Australia last year.
Australia is known as home to koalas. There used to be lots of koalas there. But habitat loss and disease have done harm to koalas. Especially the forest fire that happened in 2019 and 2020 in New South Wales had a great effect on koalas. About 5,000 are thought to have died, and more than 500 million hectares(公顷) of forests were burned in one of the worst forest fires in Australian history. That means koalas have lost almost a quarter of habitat.
Across the rest of the country, the number of koalas is falling. But effective measures(有效的措施) have not been taken to protect koalas.
“The koalas are losing their homes and the future of the koalas is in danger,” an officer warned. “If we don’t take action now, people in the future may not see a koala in the wild again.”
Luckily, to protect the koalas, Australian Koala Foundation has made a number of suggestions, including setting up new national parks and reducing land clearing. In a statement(声明), the New South Wales Environment Minister said his state would do everything it could to protect koalas for future people.
We hope that the koalas can live happily in Australia as they used to.

When throwing away trash, do you know which bin(垃圾箱) it should go in Have you ever noticed the differently colored trash bins on the street
It’s actually quite important to know how to sort(分类) your waste. Not knowing how to sort waste can make it harder to save energy and protect the environment. Different countries are using different ways to sort their trash.
The UK: smart bin
A UK company has invented a “smart bin” to help with garbage sorting. People just need to drop their garbage into the bin. A camera and sensors in the bin can tell what type of garbage it is and correctly sort it. The bin also compresses(压缩) the waste so it takes up less space.
South Korea: food aside
South Korea is using a method called “Pay for Your Trash” to encourage its people to reduce
food waste. When throwing away trash, people have to separate(分离) their food waste from their other waste and put it in a bin. The smart bin then weighs the food. People have to pay for their food waste by scanning(扫描) a barcode(条形码) on the bin. The more they throw away, the more they pay.
Japan: careful sorting
Japan is leading the world in garbage sorting. They sort garbage so carefully that even plastic bottles and their caps go into different bins. Different types of paper products also have their own bins—newspapers, magazines and cartons(纸板箱). There are also factories that make bags, clothes and dolls out of recycled waste.

请阅读下面的非连续性文本,按要求完成所给任务。
If you live in Shanghai, you might have taken a “lesson” in sorting(分类)garbage. People have to sort garbage into four kinds: recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. If they fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan.
However, it was difficult at first to master all the sorting instructions of which trash goes into which can. It’s kind of hard to learn the rules and change their old habits in such a short time. But most people seem to get used to it now.
Recyclable Paper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste.
Hazardous Waste Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and fluorescent bulbs(荧光灯泡).
Residual Waste Dry waste is the waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful.
Food Waste Wet waste is also known as household waste, which are things you don’t want but pigs can eat.
At first, we had to overcome the habit of putting garbage into a single bin(垃圾桶)on the first floor of each building and we need time to learn to separate wet from dry and put it into different bins. —Li It makes a community cleaner, and every community counts in the world when it comes to dealing with the problems of garbage sorting. Everyone needs to pull together to solve this problem. —Allan
The most important thing is to let people know how to sort the garbage into the right bins. Sometimes they don’t understand or just don’t want to change old habits. —Aunt Wu As a volunteer, I had to explain how to sort the garbage. The difficulties are in the home. It may take some time to change their habits, but we think they finally will. —Cleaner
It’s true that garbage sorting has helped to reduce waste. However, it’s more important to develop the habit of recycling things in daily life. Take the old clothes as an example. First of all, look for the clothes that you don’t want anymore and collect them, for example, the ones are too small for your kids. Then see which ones are still good enough and which are worn out and group them. Next, give away the good ones to people who need them and put the worn ones to the recycle bin. This way, you can make good use of the old clothes.

十、书面表达
Onepossibleversion:
The environmental problem has become more and more serious while our country is developing in such a rapid way. For example, the river near my home in the countryside used to be very clean. But now the water has become black and there are no more fish. We can’t see the blue sky and breathe the clean air.
From my point of view, it is our duty to make a difference to our environment. I still remember that day we took action to protect the environment. Our classmates were called in to the park. We began our Clean-up Day. Some of us made an effort to pick up a number of plastic bottles and useless bags, and others took up cleaning the old paper and leaves. After a while, the park was completely tidy and beautiful. However, how to make use of the waste things One of the classmates came up with an idea—we could make an art piece by using rubbish. We used the glue to stick the bottles and covered them with waste paper and bags. What impressed me most was that we made a special robot using the rubbish in the end. We got a strong feeling of satisfaction when we saw our robot.
Today the quality of our environment has become an important issue. The environment plays a key role in our daily life. We are supposed to improve and protect our environment from now on. Remember that small things change the world
