Cala didn’t like us, any of us. We didn’t do anything to offend her and she didn’t know us but
that didn’t matter; she still didn’t like us.
As new teachers in the Emirati school, we Westerners greeted her every day. She ignored us.
She came into our rooms and bypassed us as she shook hands with all the non-Westerners.
Whenever we saw her, she avoided eye contact with us. Eventually, we stopped trying to befriend
her.
I wouldn’t say her nationality but her friends had been fired from the school. We had been
employed in their places and that was enough for her to have nothing to do with us.
Well after 16 months in the school we had a secret friend gifting. To my surprise, I drew her
name from the glass jar and that meant she was my secret friend. My role was to buy her a gift and
say something about her when we publicly acknowledged who our secret friend was.
I decided to gift her a coloured bangle(手镯). I added a postcard and wrote “Love and
Blessings, Rose Marie.

few kind words about your secret friend and passed the gift to her. What could I say Everyone
knew she didn’t like the Westerners. She taught music in the school so I said “My secret friend is
someone who brings music to our ears every day.” She came forward with a huge warm smile. She
hugged me and kissed me on both cheeks and accepted my gift.
Since then, she smiles often. We hug and shake hands when we meet. I have seen her wear my
gift several times and I am so pleased.

Declining mental function is widely regarded as a problem of old age, but certain aspects of
brain function actually begin their decline in young adulthood, a new study suggests.
The study, which followed more than 2,000 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 60,
found that certain mental functions—including measures of abstract reasoning, mental speed and
puzzle-solving—started to dull as early as age 27. The dip in memory, meanwhile, generally
became apparent around age 37.
On the other hand, indicators of a person’s accumulated knowledge—like performance on
tests of vocabulary—kept improving with age, according to the findings.
The results do not mean that young adults need to start worrying about their memories. Most
people’s minds function at a high level even in their later years, according to researcher Timothy
Salthouse.
“These patterns suggest that some types of mental flexibility decrease relatively early in
adulthood, but that the knowledge one has, and the effectiveness of integrating (整合) it with
one’s abilities, may increase throughout all of adulthood if there are no diseases,” Salthouse said.
The study included healthy, educated adults who took standard tests of memory and
reasoning over a period of seven years. In general, Salthouse and his colleagues found, certain
aspects of cognition generally started to decline in the late 20s to 30s.
The findings threw light on normal age-related changes in mental function, which could aid
in understanding the process of dementia (痴呆). “By following individuals over time,” Salthouse
said, “we gain insight in cognition changes, and may possibly discover ways to slow the rate of
decline.”
The researchers are currently analyzing the study participants’ health and lifestyle to see
which factors might influence age-related cognitive changes.
28.What is the common view of mental function
A.It varies from person to person. B.It gradually expands with age.
C.It weakens in one’s later years. D.It indicates one’s health condition.
29.What does the underlined word “dip” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Improvement. B.Decline.
C.Difference. D.Breakthrough
30.For adults in their 40s, which of the following may improve as they age
A.Their decision-making abilities. B.Their abstract reasoning abilities.
C.The sympathy they show people around. D.The amount of knowledge they have.
31.According to Salthouse, their study may help us .
A.find ways to improve our memories
B.find ways to slow down our mental decline
C.understand the complex process of mental functioning

A new device works like a solar panel, except that it doesn’t harvest energy from the sun. It
absorbs energy from the cold night sky.
A prototype(原型)of the device produced enough electricity at night to power a small light
bulb. A bigger version might one day light rooms or charge phones. It also could power
electronics in remote or low-resource areas that lack electricity.
The device makes use of the temperature difference between Earth and outer space. It then
uses that difference to create electricity. As long as one side of it is cooler than the other, the
generator can produce electricity. The cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an aluminum
plate. That plate is sealed beneath a transparent cover and surrounded with insulation(隔热材料)
to keep out heat. The bottom of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminum plate. That plate
is warmed by the local air. At night, the top plate can get a couple of degrees Celsius cooler than
the bottom of the generator.
Researchers tested a 20-centimeter prototype one clear December night in Stanford,
California. The generator produced up to about 25 milliwatts of power per square meter of device.
That was enough power to light a small light-emitting diode, or LED bulb. Further improvements
might increase its production to at least 500 milliwatts per square meter. To do that, the system
might need more insulation around the cool top plate.
The device also could help power remote weather stations or other environmental devices,
says Aaswath Raman. He is a materials scientist who worked on the device at the University of
California, Los Angeles. “This may be useful in polar regions that don’t see sunlight for months at
a time”, Raman says. “If you have some low-power load and you need to power it through three
months of darkness, this might be a way. ”
32. What can we know about the new device
A. It gains energy from the sun. B. It’s been widely used in life.
C. It is cooler than a solar panel. D. It’ll be popular in special areas.
33. What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 3
A. Application fields of the device.
B. The developing process of the device.
C. The working principle of the device.
D. Significant effects of the device.
34. How can the device produce more electricity
A. By putting more insulation around the top plate.
B. By using it in extremely cold and clear nights.
C. By attaching the bottom plate to a warm plate.
D. By covering the top plate with a transparent lid.

35. What could be a suitable title for the text
A. A Device Using the Cold Night Sky to Produce Electricity
B. A Device Bringing New Hope for Those in the Cold Night
C. The Difference Between a Solar Panel and a New Device
D. The Temperature Difference Between Earth and Outer Space

The Goals That Guide Us
Whether we’re on the long trip of a mid-life career or the walk to the bedroom to finally
organize that closet, it can be hard to gather up the motivation to make that first step. 36 . Here
are some ways you can take to start moving toward achieving your goals.
Put your goals in writing.
Writing down goals prevents you from leaving your goals vague. Be specific. Use action verbs.
37 . Specify completion dates. Also record what your reward will be for achieving the goal.
Make a contract with yourself, and then read it each morning and night. This will help you to be
more committed to your goal as each day passes.
Learn what you need to learn.
If information or skill is keeping you from achieving your goals, determine ways to fill in the
gaps, and build this into your action plan. 38 . Think about how much time and effort will
be required, and ask yourself whether you are really willing and able to do what is necessary. It is
better to adjust your goals or your timetable than to proceed with a plan that is unrealistic.
39 .
Find someone, a coworker or a friend, with whom you share a common goal. Get someone to
go to the gym with you, or to quit smoking with you, or to share healthy meals with you. A partner
can help you stay committed and motivated. Look for role models, people who have already
achieved the goals you seek to reach. 40 . Find how they got to where they are, and
incorporate(使并入)what you learn into your plan.
A. Seek the help of others
B. Make a list of your tools
C. Ask them for advice and suggestions
D. Let your goals have measurable outcomes
E. Make yourself feel good about the progress you’ve made
F. A thousand-mile journey starts with the first small step

Michael Collins, the Apollo 11 command module(舱)pilot and first astronaut 56

“Today the nation lost a true pioneer and lifelong advocate for 57 (explore)in astronautics,”

NASA Administrator Steve Jurczyk said in a statement published on Wednesday. “As the pilot of
the Apollo 11 command module—some called him ‘the loneliest man in history’—while his 58

It was probably her giggling(咯咯笑) that drew my attention. English reading really wasn’t
that funny as far as I knew.
It was early May and I was facing a class of sixteen kids. Though I had almost three years
of teaching, this particular sixth grade class had pushed me to the limits of my patience far too
many times, and I couldn’t wait to wave goodbye to them for the summer.
I had kept away from the ideal of my first year of teaching. That first year I’d covered up
the small hole in the window with an inspirational poster. I’d decorated the walls with pictures
of famous universities. I told the kids daily that they always had something worth struggling for.
Together we would work hard and make something of their lives.
The problem, of course, was that my ideals kept being defeated by reality. Not just the
reality of troubled families. I was also faced with the basic reality of the twelve- and
thirteen-year-old mind. The universal mind, “You can’t make me!”
And now I was faced with a giggle when I should have had only full attention. Walking
over to the young peacebreaker, I asked for the note she had in her hands. Frozen, she refused to
give it to me. I waited, all attention in the room on the quiet battle between teacher and student.
When she finally handed it over, saying, “Okay, but I didn’t draw it,” which showed this wasn’t
just an ordinary note being passed.
After getting the class going on an English reading test, I finally had a chance to look
through it. It was a hand-drawn picture of me, eyes monitoring widely, teeth blackened, and the
words “I’m stupid” coming out of my mouth. There was no doubt about who it was supposed to
be.
I managed to fold up the picture calmly. My mind, however, was working angrily and
wanting to criticize some students on the scene. I figured I knew the two most likely candidates
for drawing the picture. Maybe it was high time that I did it!

21.A. After the exhausting and exciting trip, the characters in the book begin to
realize the meaning of life. 故选 A。
22.D. Experience the artist’s passionate life in the book during a trip to Central
Europe. The book invites you to deeply reflect on your current life."
The book narrates the author’s simple but adventurous life in the Sahara Desert,
which seems a desolate and dull place.
由第三段“I wouldn’t say her nationality but her friends had been fired from the school. We had
been employed in their places and that was enough for her to have nothing to do with us.”
故选 A 项。
由文章第五段“I decided to gift her a coloured bangl(e 手镯). I added a postcard and wrote “Love
and Blessings, Rose Marie.”以及第六段“She taught music in the school so I said “My secret friend is someone who
brings music to our ears every day.” She came forward with a huge warm smile. She hugged me and kissed me on both
cheeks and accepted my gift.”
由倒数第二段“She came forward with a huge warm smile. She hugged me and kissed me on both
cheeks and accepted my gift.”以及最后一段“Since then, she smiles often. We hug and shake hands when we meet. I
have seen her wear my gift several times and I am so pleased.”
根据第一段“Declining mental function is widely regarded as a problem of old age, but certain
aspects of brain function actually begin their decline in young adulthood, a new study suggests.(心理功能衰退被广泛
因此,心理功能的一般观点是:C 项“It weakens in one’s later years.(晚年会变弱)”符合题意。故
选 C 项。
根据上一句“The study, which followed more than 2,000 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and
60, found that certain mental functions—including measures of abstract reasoning, mental speed and
puzzle-solving—started to dull as early as age 27.(这项研究跟踪了 2000 多名 18 至 60 岁的健康成年人,发现某些心
根据第五段“These patterns suggest that some types of mental flexibility decrease relatively early
in adulthood, but that the knowledge one has, and the effectiveness of integrating (整合) it with one's abilities, may
increase throughout all of adulthood if there are no diseases
根据第七段““following individuals over time, ” Salthouse said, “we gain insight in cognition
changes, and may possibly discover ways to slow the rate of decline.”(索尔特豪斯说:“随着时间的推移,通过跟踪个
B 项“find ways to slow down our mental decline(想办法减缓我们的智力衰退)”符合题意。
根据第二段的最后一句“It also could power electronics in remote or low-resource areas that lack
electricity.”和最后一段的最后两句“If you have some low-power load and you need to power it through three months
of darkness,this might be a way.”
The device makes use of the temperature difference between Earth and outer space. It
then uses that difference to create electricity. As long as one side of it is cooler than the other, the generator can produce
electricity. The cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an aluminum plate. That plate is sealed beneath a
transparent cover and surrounded with insulation(隔热材料) to keep out heat. The bottom of the generator is attached to
an exposed aluminum plate. That plate is warmed by the local air. At night, the top plate can get a couple of degrees
Celsius cooler than the bottom of the generator.
根据第四段中“To do that, the system might need more insulation around the cool top plate”可知,
故选 A 项。
文章第一段“A new device works like a solar panel, except that it doesn’t harvest energy from the
sun. It absorbs energy from the cold night sky.”
故选 A 项。

Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind. Suppressing my pride, I showed them the picture. The whole class was
silent as I told them how hurtful this was for a teacher. Struggling to control my emotion, I demanded there must be a
reason behind for such a picture and that now was their chance to tell me anything they needed to tell me. Asking them
to get out of paper and write silently, I sniffled in the back of the classroom.
Looking over the notes later, I realized I was too strict with them. Where I thought I was driving them to success, I
was actually driving them away. After class, the girl walked up, handing me a card embarrassedly. One side of the card
was sincere regret for the ugly joke while the other side the appeal for forgiveness. I was deeply moved. Meanwhile, a
great sense of guilt arose for being too harsh. After all, students appreciate being appreciated, for teachers’
encouragement is their best motivating force.
Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind. After collecting up, I cast a serious glance at the whole class just in time
to see their nervous expressions. Should I investigate No. They did it for some reasons. I searched my mind for ideas.
Bingo! A plan hit me! “A humorous cartoon really,” I said jokingly and showed the kids the picture, “Why doesn’t each
of you make a note in English like this ” With a breath of relief, they laughed understandingly. The next minutes saw
them drawing and writing carefully. Soon, the notes were handed in. (89)
Looking over the notes later, I realized I was too strict with them. The kids poured out their heart through the notes.
They apologized for their rudeness. They wished me not to push them too hard but to treat them more patiently…I read
the notes with deep guilt, determined to be their friends and listen to them. I did make it and they longed for each
English reading class. Even today, I still keep the notes as a reminder. How grateful I am for the notes that brightened
my gloomy days and kept me pursuing my initial teaching ideal! (86)
