(共11题;每小题2.5分,满分27.5)
A
In early January this year, I decided that it was high time for me to return to the world of academic studies. It wasn’t that I longed to be in the daily company of young people or to become a model father for my children. That was the year I finally decided to re-enter the world of academia in an effort to earn a degree and emerge (显现) as an educated naturalist.
I was convinced that the curriculum administrators of my local college would agree that since I had not, during the past two decades, used any mathematical equations (方程式), there would be no reason for me to study geometry and algebra at this stage of my life. I was wrong. Thus it was in late June that I found myself searching for a math course that would occupy the next two months of my summer.
You might think that registering for a math course would be a fairly simple matter, but very little came easy to me. Such was the case when I attempted to sign up for Math 108.
When I was finally in class, I found myself pouring through a textbook that could only be described as full of the most confusing terms and problems. Just then, a voice from deep within my heart whispered, “Gary, you can do it. You will make it through the fires of math and emerge with an ‘A’ for your efforts.”
Over the next two months, I not only listened to the voice, but also to Pete’s wonderful teachings. In addition, I devoted what seemed to be hundreds of hours to my homework assignments and preparation for tests.
I emerged from my experiences with Math 108 as the top student in the class. In fact, I was the only person to get an “A” for the course.
21. Why did the author decide to go back to college
A. To receive further education.
B. To have a totally new career.
C. To set a good example for his children.
D. To seek the company of young people.
22. What does the author mean by saying “I was wrong” underlined in paragraph 2
A. He was actually good at math.
B. He was required to take a math course.
C. He gave up studying geometry and algebra.
D. He had used some mathematical equations.
23. How did the author react when facing difficulties in math
A. He lost confidence. B. He encouraged himself.
C. He chose another subject. D. He asked other students for help.

The remains of a huge building from ancient Greece have been discovered by underwater researchers working at a site of a historic battle that took place 2,500 years ago.
The monumental construction was found in the shallow waters off the coast of Salamis during excavation (挖掘) work that took place in June and July last year. The Greek Culture Ministry, which announced the discovery, said it dates back to the time of the Battle of Salamis — a naval battle between Greek and Persian states. Underwater researchers were carrying out a study of the area when they found the remains in the shallow waters. They believed it was a large public building that was used until the late Roman times, in the third century C.E.
The researchers said it would likely have been one of the main public buildings in the area. The team found many other features relating to the building and marble sculptures. This, the ministry said, appears to date back to the fourth century B.C.E.
During the 2018 study, the researchers used a new technique where a flexible barrier was constructed, allowing them to drain (排水) the area being excavated, get a better view of the site and take samples of the remains, helping them date the building.
The discovery of the building is important as it is helping the researchers reconstruct the geography of the area 2,500 years ago. At this time — 480 B.C.E.— the Battle of Salamis took place in the straits between Salamis Island and mainland Greece. Following successful invasions (入侵) by the Persian army, the Greek ships had withdrawn to Salamis. At this point Themistocles, a politician and general, convinced Greek friends to fight, a report of the battle by the U.K.’s Cardiff University notes. The Persians thought they had the advantage. They entered the straits of Salamis with a view to blocking the entrance. However, their large ships failed to operate well in the tight waterways and the Greeks were victorious. After this win, the Greeks defeated the Persians in several other key battles, ending the period of invasion.
24. What can be learned about the huge building
A. It was ruined during a naval battle.
B. It was still used after Roman times.
C. It was built after the Battle of Salamis.
D. It was discovered in the shallow waters.
25. What’s paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Why the researchers built a barrier.
B. How the researchers drained the area.
C. Why the researchers dated the building.
D. How the researchers conducted the study.
26. What’s the meaning of studying the remains
A. It tells people of a great politician’s achievements.
B. It shows why the Persian army carried out invasions.
C. It helps the researchers know what the area used to be like.
D. It confirms the report by the U.K.’s Cardiff University.
27. What do we know about the Battle of Salamis
A. It ended with the Greeks’ victory.
B. It put an end to the Persians’ invasion.
C. It took place in the mainland of Greece.
D. It forced the Persians to abandon their ships.

My 7-year-old daughter Leeny always has her nose in a book. She even took to reading in the car on the long drive to summer camp, which was where she lost the book. This is the first lost library book in my life. My family has always been overeducated, but we were poor. I didn’t own books. I borrowed books. However, my daughters have more books now than I owned my whole childhood, and I knowingly contribute to it by adding to the stacks( 堆 ). So it’s probably my fault that when Leeny realized she had lost the book, she shrugged( 耸肩).“Sorry. I can't find it,” she said. “It’s only $20, right What’s the big deal ”
I felt the need to make her feel responsible for the book. She agreed to help me clean the chicken coop(笼子) in trade for my paying the library fine. I thought this idea was very clever because cleaning the coop is some work I had been avoiding for months. It was summertime and dust floated in the air. But my girl, my animal-loving mini-me, thought shoveling chicken poop(铲鸡粪) was the most fun she’d had on a Saturday morning in a long time. She didn’t feel any of the emotions that punishment is supposed to introduce. In fact, she looked as if she might lose another on purpose in order to clean the coop again. I stood, somewhat dumbfounded, watching her.
It took me a while to realize what had happened, why my punishment had failed so completely and why I didn’t care. The fact is that I had Leeny help me clean the chicken coop. I was there, too, shoveling chicken poop, fetching the clean straw and feed. Leeny’s little sister, Vicki, was inside watching a cartoon while my husband paid bills. Only Leeny and I were outside. She had me all to herself for the first time since Vicki was born, and she was enjoying all the attention for once. I don't know what she learned about responsibility, but I found that I didn’t care about the book any more. We bonded over that unpleasant job and spent quality time together: mother, daughter, and chicken poop.
28. How does Leeny find reading
A. It is very challenging. B. It is better to be done in a library.
C. It is full of enjoyment. D. It costs a large fortune.
29. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refers to the fact that ________.
A. the author’s daughters own too many books.
B. the author’s daughter often lost library books.
C. the author could never have enough books to read.
D. the author didn’t own many books.
30. How did the author feel after she saw Leeny’s cleaning work
A. Ashamed B. Astonished C. Embarrassed D. Upset
31. What’s the best title for the passage
A. What I owe to Leeny: more attention
B. My daughter drove me crazy, but I felt grateful
C. Surprise: my daughter loves cleaning chicken coops
D. My punishment failed, but I didn’t care

A Japanese Technique for Overcoming Laziness
Almost all of us set ourselves a new goal, but often fail to achieve it in the end. ___32____ Most of the time, it is because we try to do too many things in a short amount of time.
If this is something that you often come across, you are not alone. This is where the concept of Kaizen comes into play. It is a one-minute principle developed by Masaaki Imai. The roots of Kaizen are in the words, “kai” meaning “change”, and “zen” meaning “good”._____33_____
At the center of this concept is the idea that you should practice doing something for only a minute, every day at the same time. The method is to break your lazy type of thinking, in that it should not be any trouble for you to do a task for just 60 seconds.____34_____ After all, it is not as if you are being asked to do something for 30 minutes every day, just 60 seconds.
The underlying belief is that the more you do it and experience joy during your practice, you will more naturally want to continue doing it the next day. In time, you can ramp up (增加) your task from 1 minute to 2 minutes to 5 minutes and so on. _____35_______
What you need to realize is that, the smaller challenges, when combined with continuous effort, are more rewarding. _____36_____ It is the small victories that are more likely to occur with Kaizen, which will help encourage you to keep going.
A. What is Kaizen about
B. Why does it always turn out like this
C. Masaaki Imai founded Kaizen Institute in 1985.
D. Together, the words mean “change for the better”.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Katie was exceptionally small. We were in the fifth grade, but she was as short as a third grader. Although her body was small, Katie was big at heart. She had a sharp mind, too. Sometimes she got her share of teasing, but Katie knew how to handle it. All the kids who knew Katie liked her a lot.
Katie loved helping others in the class, so whenever someone was stuck on the computer he always called her for help and advice. Katie loved jokes and she always had a joke that would cheer someone up whenever he was down. She was truly the most kind and generous friend anyone could ask for.
But the other day she was in big trouble. She was such a sweet kid, a third-grade teacher always dreamed of having a classroom filled with students like Katie. She was never ever a discipline problem. I just couldn’t imagine why she had made her parents so angry.
It seemed that Katie had been running up (积欠) sizable charges in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great homemade lunch each day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem, but failed. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation.
So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. “Why are you charging (记账) lunches, Katie What happens to your homemade lunch ” I asked. “I lose it,” she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said. “I don’t believe you, Katie.” She didn’t care. “Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie ” I took a new track. “No. I just lose it,” she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.

八 参考范文
The problem was still unsolved the next week until I noticed a boy in the school canteen. He was silent sitting alone at a lunch table. He had messy hair and a thin face, always wearing his oversized coat and looking sad and shy. I thought I would go and sit with him for a while. As I walked towards him, I noticed the lunch bag on the table. The name card on the bag said “Katie”. Now I understood what had happened. Later that day, I found Katie and talked to her about it.
Katie asked me not to tell her parents. But I drove to her house that evening after I was sure that she was in bed. I had never seen parents so proud of their child. Katie didn’t care that she was misunderstood by her parents and teacher. But she cared about a little boy who was hungry and scared. What a sweet girl she was! Later Katie still bought lunch every day at school. And every morning, as she headed out of the door, her mom handed her a delicious homemade lunch.
