While most of the world is sleeping, ice dance partners Christian Bennett and Sabrina Foti wake up at 5 am twice a week to train. After breakfast, Christian Bennett and Sabrina Foti, both 14 years old, are off to their school. Then, after school, their parents drive them to practise.
That's the daily life of Bennett and Foti. Thanks to their strict training, they won fifth place at US Figure Skating Championships(花样滑冰锦标赛) in 2019. It's a big success for the two teenagers.
The teenagers have been partners for five years. Both of them love skating.“I think everyone needs a sport that they're good at,” said Bennett. “Something that can make you feel you have a gift. That's how Foti and I feel. This is a kind of our sport.”
They not only get on like brother and sister, but also are physically right for each other. While Bennett is outgoing and confident, Foti is a bit shy but easy going(随和的). Bennett is 1.8 metres tall while Foti is 1.52 metres tall. Foti's petite(娇小的) size allows Bennett to lift her in the air easily.
Ice dancing takes them too much time. But it's worthwhile(值得的) because Foti and Bennett have a further goal. “The next Winter Olympics is our next goal,” said Foti. In 2014, Chinese skater Wu Dajing introduced himself to the skating world by winning a silver medal at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games. At the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, Wu not only returned, but also made history.
On Feb. 22nd, 2018, Wu won the gold medal in the men’s short-track 500-metre race. He set a new world record with a time of 39.584 seconds. He also became the first Chinese man to take home an Olympic short-track gold medal. BBC said Wu’s win was flawless, because he was much faster than all of the other skaters. “I didn’t give them a chance and I kept my speed from the start,” he told the reporter after the match. But China’s short-track teams didn’t do well in general at the Games. Chinese skaters in the women’s 500 metres, the 3,000-metre relay and men’s 1,500 metres all failed to take home the gold medal. Wu was China’s biggest hope, which put a lot of pressure on him. But he proved himself with his great performance.
Wu is now known as a highly talented skater. But things were not always that way. When Wu joined the national team in 2010, he was seen as almost “nothing” compared to gifted skaters like Zhou Yang and Fan Kexin, as his coaches said at the time. Their words made him quite upset. But Wu didn’t want to give up and worked as hard as he could. He practised skating all year round. He even didn’t return to his home town for the holidays for 10 years. “I believe in myself,” he told the reporter after his match at the Olympics.
