Signs posted up and down the school hallway didn’t let me forget: Snowball Dance — Next Friday Night! No one would be asking me, the junior high school outcast (被抛弃的人).My face was ruined, and my balance was off — I had seizures (癫痫病) without warning. All these were making my middle school life miserable. I kept my head down as I hurried to the classroom.
I stepped into the office where my teacher Mrs Barrett waited. She learned that my grandmother had been teaching me to sew for years, but none of the other kids in the class knew it. Mrs Barrett called me up to her desk.“A lot of girls need help with changes on their dresses for the Snowball Dance.I thought you could help me after school,” she said.“Sure,” I said. Together with Mrs Barrett, I sewed buttons, shortened some sleeves, and lengthened others.
Teresa, one of the most popular girls, came by to pick up her dress.“Roberta designed and sewed it by hand,” Mrs Barrett told her.“It’s fashionable! Thanks. You must have added this brilliant belt,” she said.“I tied ribbons to the end of a pearl necklace,” I said, looking down at my shabby shoes.Teresa didn’t get crowned (加冕) at the dance, but her Snowball Dance dress was the talk of the school during the following week. Word quickly spread that I was actually good at something. Soon the girls were coming to me and Mrs Barrett for custom made dresses.“We should organize a fashion show,” Mrs Barrett said one day. We asked the girls in the office and they all wanted to participate. We had a packed auditorium (礼堂) for the show.
“This fashion show was a great success, and better than any dance could be. I think we pushed back the boundaries of fashion,” Mrs Barrett said after the fashion show.
Those weren’t the only boundaries we pushed back. Later, Mrs Barrett encouraged me to run for student body president. “The kids have known your talent,” she said. And I was elected president of the grade. I must say it’s my luck to meet Mrs Barrett in my life.
24.What do we know about the author before receiving Mrs Barrett’s request
A.She was well liked by her classmates.
B.She wasn’t interested in the dance at all.
C.She felt lonely, miserable and depressed.
D.She was unlucky, sensitive, but optimistic.
25.What did Mrs Barrett ask the author to do
A.Design a new dress for her. B.Help her with the girls’ dresses.
C.Go to the Snowball Dance with her.
D.Get along with her classmates and cheer up.
26.Why did Teresa’s dress become a popular topic in the school
A.The dress was specially designed. B.She was elected Snowball Queen.
C.She helped design her own dress. D.Teresa was the most popular girl.
27.The author mainly owed her change to ________.
A.her special talent B.her hard work
C.her friendly classmates D.her teacher Mrs Barrett

Growing up in an Italian American household was, for me, pretty special. My mother, Gina, an immigrant from Italy, held on to so many of her family’s traditions that at times, regardless of the fact that I was living in America, our home felt like in Italy.
To this day, my mother only speaks to me in Italian. She may speak in some English terms and expressions from time to time, but our conversations are, for the most part, in her mother tongue. And most of those conversations are about food. For us, food — Italian food is an important part of our lives. The food my mother prepared for me and my sister as children is the same food as my grandmother created in her small farm kitchen high up in the mountains.
One of my family’s dishes of heritage I am sure to learn and perfect is my mother’s arancini di riso (Italian rice balls).Arancini, in Italian, means little oranges. After you roll some leftover rice into a small ball, place a piece of mozzarella (莫泽雷勒干酪) in the center, then bread that and fry it, the golden outside resembles one of our favorite fruits. For my family, it also showcased my mother’s ability to always find a delicious way to never let anything go to waste: Last night’s good rice was repurposed into this perfect mid day snack or dinner appetizer.
So, when I take a perfect little arancini out of the hot oil and crack it open, I am immediately transported back to my childhood: I am a little girl getting off the bus and running through the back door to the smell of last night’s rice transformed into sticky, delicate goodness. This small snack symbolizes so many important elements in my life: my mother’s waste not philosophy, her ability to take a few simple ingredients and transform them, and finally, the way she carried her mother’s recipes to the US in her mind and heart so she could, years later, teach me about my heritage through food.
Eating arancini, and all the other recipes my mother continued to make here in the US after leaving Italy, allowed her to teach me who I am, where I come from, and why I should be proud of it all.
28.What makes the author’s home feel like in Italy
A.Fruit and snacks. B.Neighbors and friends.
C.Names and holidays. D.Food and language.
29.Why is the author sure to learn and perfect arancini di riso
A.It saves valuable food from going to waste.
B.It reminds the author of her days at school.
C.It plays a major role in continuing family tradition.
D.It showcases the cooking skills of the author’s mother.
30.What does the underlined word “goodness” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.Arancini di riso. B.Mother’s kindness.
C.The Italian language. D.Amazing cooking skills.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.Why learning to cook is important for a mother.
B.How the family heritage is taught through food.
C.How childhood experiences change one’s life.
D.Why mothers are important in children’s education.

In today’s short attention span information overloaded age, there are new challenges for creative workers.
For creators, the news and information cycle is so fast that to earn attention for your work suggests you have to keep up with it all. But the other side of that technological coin is that it’s easier than ever to make things and distribute them online.
Of course the entire planet does not care when yet more media is added to the world. But even 50 years ago, before the Internet, there were more films made each year than anyone could possibly see and more books published annually than anyone could read.
Before the web there was often no way to get your work distributed unless you had permission. Given the choice of a) depending on the approval of others to finish projects and share them with the world, but having fewer competitors vs.b) being able to put anything into the world, but I have to compete with everyone else for attention, I definitely choose B.At least I have a chance. At least I can compete, and use my skills at creation as an advantage.
Attention from fans matters more than the rest of the world. The most famous people in any media get most of the attention. But the fallacy is that you need to be in that top 1% or 5% to make a living. As a matter of fact, you simply need enough fans and attention to earn you enough money to make a living.
A creative life is not the safe and secure path. The more creative the life you choose, the more risk that will come with it. It can be wonderfully rewarding, but you are choosing to compete to earn a living, and even if you do everything right, the chances are that you can still fail.I recommend doing it anyway, since you will learn more about life and yourself by taking the challenging path, but you should do it with your eyes open.
32.In what way was the situation 50 years ago similar to the mentioned one
A.People needed to compete for attention.
B.Few people cared about creative works.
C.Many people engaged in creative work.
D.People had difficulty in spreading their works.
33.Why does the author choose b instead of a
A.He is afraid of fierce competition.
B.He wants to have more competitors.
C.He is badly in need of more attention.
D.He values the opportunity to compete.
34.What does the underlined word “fallacy” in Paragraph 5 mean
A.A new opinion. B.A wrong belief.
C.A valuable idea. D.A strange concept.
35.What’s the author’s attitude to a creative life
A.Critical. B.Doubtful. C.Supportive. D.Ambiguous.

Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.
"Mum, Dad, " said Mary suddenly, "I think we should leave here right away!"
"No, " said Dad. "It's too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded."
"We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let's just leave! I'm really scared!"cried Mary.
"We can't do that, honey, " explained Mum, "otherwise the moving water could wash the car away!"
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was
outside.
"Don't open the door! " shouted Mum and Dad at the same time. "The water may flood in!"
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa."Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be OK," she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.

第四部分 书面表达 (共两节,满分40分)
第一节 (满分15分)
Dear Penny,
How is everything going these days In response to your questions, I am more than delighted to introduce two of the most symbolic colors in China. Without doubt, the first one is red, a symbol of joy and celebration. Therefore, it is traditional for Chinese brides to wear a red wedding dress. In addition, white is conventionally associated with sadness, usually seen at the funerals. However, as time changes, white can also signify purity. That's why many brides wear white in their wedding ceremonies, as is often the case in your country.
Hopefully my introduction to colors in China is of great value for your essay. Wish you all the best.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 (满分25分)
After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad decided they should stay in the house. They thought it would be really dangerous to try to walk through the water to get to higher ground.“Mary, we’ll have to go upstairs and wait there,” said Mum.“Ok, Mum. If that’s what you think is best,” Mary replied uncertainly.Seized by fear, they went upstairs and waited.Downstairs, water flooding into the living room and kitchen, the three stood still for any noise they could hear.Nervous as they were, at least they had disaster supplies, including food and drinking water.
Finally, the rain stopped. However, Mary and her family could not leave while the house was still flooded. “Listen! The rescue workers are coming to our rescue.” Mary exclaimed, pointing to the radio. Relieved and excited, her parents hugged together tightly. Hopefully, a boat ended up arriving at their house and they were safe. Though their home had been badly damaged, they were all happy and lucky to be alive.
