In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join “environment clubs”. In an environment club, people work together to make our environment clean.
● No-garbage lunches. How much do you throw away after lunch Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be used again. Every week they will choose the classes that make the least garbage and report them to the whole school!
● No-car day. On the no-car day, nobody comes to school by car--not the students and not the teachers! Cars give pollution to the air, so remember:
Walk, jump, bike or run.
Use your legs! It’s lots of fun!
● Turn off the water! Did you know that some toilets can waste twenty to forty m3 of water an hour In a year that would fill a small river! In environment clubs, students mend those broken toilets.
We love our environment. Let’s work together to make it clean.

A Love Note to My Mum
When I was a little girl, you always modeled for fashion photographers. It was years later that I finally understood the role that modelling plays in your life. Little did I know you were saving every penny you made to go to law school.
I cannot thank you enough for what you told me one autumn afternoon when I was nine. After finishing my homework, I went into the dining room where you were focusing on reading law books. I was confused. Why were you doing what I do – memorizing textbooks and studying for tests When you said you were in law school, I was even more surprised. I didn’t know mums could be lawyers, too. You smiled and said, “In life, you can do anything you want to do.”
As young as I was, those words kept ringing in my ears. I watched as you faced the challenges of completing your studies, starting companies with Dad, while still being a model and a mum of five kids. You never complained and gave up. With your words of wisdom in my mind, I suddenly felt the freedom to dream. My whole world opened up. I set out to live my life filled with hope, seeing endless possibilities for personal and professional success.
Your words became my motto (座右铭). As I grew up, I always found myself in the unique position of being either the first or one of the few women (chief medical reporters) in my field. I gained power every time I said, “Yes, I’ll try that.”
Encouraged by your words, I have forged ahead (毅然前行) with my life’s journey, less afraid to make mistakes or to meet challenges. You did it, and now I’m doing it. Sorry, I have got to run. So much to do, so many dreams to realize.
4. What is the author’s main purpose of writing this letter
A. To show her admiration to her mum.
B. To thank her mum for taking care of her.
C. To encourage her mum to achieve her dreams.
D. To tell her mum that she is doing great at her job.
5. What did her mum do to make money for law school
A. She worked for a law school. B. She started up a company.
C. She was a fashion model. D. She worked as a doctor.
6. According to Paragraph 2, why did the author feel confused
A. She had difficulties in understanding the law books.
B. She had problems with her homework.
C. She didn’t know that a mum could study in law school.
D. She didn’t understand why mum said “you can do anything”.
7. What can we learn from the writer and her stories about her mum
A.Family is the most important thing in the world.
B.We should be brave enough to dream and work hard for it.
C.Parents should help their children achieve success.
D.Children should respect and support their parents’ dreams.
C
One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school
Listen—Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say;they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.
Help them—If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes in case they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.
Be there for them—Try to make something for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for friends. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time!
Try to organize some activities with your friends ahead of time. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to the movies and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old!
8. While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should .
A. give him or her some advice B. just listen unless asked
C. calm him or her down D. share your feelings as well
9. What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe’s words
A. Life without a friends is death. B. A friend is easier lost than found.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. A man is known by his friends.
10. Which of the following can be put in the blank of the last paragraph
A. Make plans. B. Enjoy yourself.
C. Understand your friends. D. Play with your friends.
11. What is the passage mainly about
A. How to find a good friend. B. How to help friends in trouble.
C. How to be a good friend. D. How to make more friends.

Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the internet — but in forms very different to what we accept and recognize as English today.
That’s because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don’t have to worry about their accent (口音).
Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different “Englishes” including Indian English, Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they’re now expanding and coming online. Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary. And most large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common language — English — to reach global customers.
The increasing popularity of the internet allows more languages to develop quickly.
“Most people actually speak several languages — it’s less common to only speak one,” says Mr. Munro. “English has taken its place as the world’s common language, but it’s not pushing out other languages.” Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.
12. What does the text mainly talk about
A. English is a common language around the world.
B. There are now many different language styles.
C. English language is developing with the Internet.
D. Smaller businesses are learning a common language.
13. Which of the following is NOT true about online communication
A. People need to spell exactly. B. Grammar is not so important.
C. People do not care about their accent. D. Most English-speakers are not native speakers.
14. What can we infer from the text
A. We can only communicate online in English.
B. It’s impossible to find all the English words in the dictionary.
C. Some technology companies start to publish English dictionaries.
D. Smaller businesses are not allowed to have English websites.
15. What can we learn from what Mr. Munro said
A. The other languages are enriching English.
B. One can’t live well without speaking several languages.
C. English will become the only language in the world.
D. Chinese used to be the world’s common language.

A friend of mine met with an accident driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. What was the 21 was that he found himself unable to ask for help—his mobile phone went out of work as a result of exhausted (用尽的) battery. Nothing could be done but 22 in cold wilderness. It was 8 hours later that day broke, and then the 23 of the rescue (救援队).
It was almost 24 that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his explanation, “First of all I checked up my __25 conditions and found myself not in deadly danger. As there was no 26 to call for help, I leaned back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from bleeding. In this way I dozed (打盹) off.”

A group of young men 27 to explore a mountain cave and got lost. 28 to find a way out in the dark cave, they were frightened and ran anxiously without a 29 of direction. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to 32 themselves, they would probably sense a faint light flashing not far away.

It seems to be a negative (消极的) attitude, 35 a person who can do so must have foresight (先见之明)as well as a great courage in the first place.

Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighbourhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, "I'm afraid to take part in it." Her mother said, "it's okay, just do it bravely." Emily followed her mum's advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的) to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily (颤抖地) forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What's worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词) after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said, "Emily, coward (胆小鬼)! Emily, coward!" Emily didn't argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mum and cried sadly.
"Well, my poor girl. Don't cry. Tell me what happened to you," asked her mum. Emily looked up at her mother and told her what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mum cupped her face and said, "It doesn't matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don't be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you."
Paragraph 1:
Emily listened to her mother carefully and followed her mum's suggestion. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2 :
Going on singing, she walked into the park, where many people were singing and dancing.

Emily listened to her mother carefully and followed her mum's suggestion. The next day, she began to practice singing outside. ①Gradually, her courage became greater and greater, and the sound of her singing was also louder and louder. Months later, she could sing as she was walking. A naughty boy who had laughed at her before cried to her, "Emily, coward! Emily, coward!" However, she chose to ignore his behaviour.
Going on singing, she walked into the park, where many people were singing and dancing. ②Hearing her beautiful voice, some stopped to listen to her singing and clapped for her. A grandma smiled to her and said, "Oh, little girl, you sing really well!" Emily said thanks to her. Emily felt pleased that she could sing confidently in front of strangers. The second year, the neighbourhood held the singing competition again. This time, Emily walked onto the stage bravely, and her loud and beautiful voice of singing moved all the people. They all cheered for her, including those who had laughed at her. Her mother was delighted to see the timid girl had been a brave one.
