As an adult, I realized that I had no skills, so I went to trade school. I entered a cabinetmaking (家具制造)program. 1 didn't think I would be good at building furniture. I'm not handy. Nobody in my family is.
I had great teachers, but making furniture is hard. There are so many steps and something can go wrong at each one. I couldn't even get organized. My toolbox always looked like a hurricane had gone through it.
I didn't fully know what I was devoting myself to at the beginning, but I kept going to class. I tried to wrap my brain around the math. The projects forced me to solve new kinds of problems. My brain started to build new connections. Working in this new physical manner and giving it 100 percent of my effort had huge benefits for my mental health. I got over fear of embarrassment and asked for help at every opportunity.
I spent that year truly learning. True learning is a humbling (令人谦卑的)experience, especially for those of us who are learning a new set of skills. I could understand exactly what was wrong with the furniture I made, but I couldn't fix my mistakes. And yet, I kept trying. And foiling. And failing again. Until I learned to fail better.
You're going to be bad at anything when you start out, but I was pretty bad right to the end. Even so, I finished the program — with honors! My grades were helped by my good written work. Having to constantly push beyond my comfort zone has made me a better-rounded person. Maybe most importantly, trade school gave me a more realistic idea of my strengths and limitations. I'm stronger than I thought!
20. Why did the author sign up for the cabinetmaking program
A. To make more friends. B. To become a handy designer.
C. To get more organized. D . To develop new skills.
21. What can we know about the author
A. He had a gift for making furniture.
B. He became stronger both mentally and physically after the program.
C. The biggest challenge for him is to know how to correct mistakes.
D. He finished the program with honor because of his excellent skills in the end.
22. Which words can best describe the author during the one-year learning
A. Hard-working and confident. B. Devoted and determined.
C. Intelligent and creative. D. Modest and independent.
23. What does the author want to convey
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Never too late to learn.
C. Learning is more than a skill. D. Skills will never be a burden.

Climate change, not human hunting, may have destroyed the thylacine (袋狼),according to a new study based on DNA from thylacine bones.
The incat-eating marsupials (有袋动物)died out on mainland Australia a few thousand years ago, but survived in Tasmania, an island of southeast Australia separated from the mainland, until the 1930s. Until now, scientists have believed the cause of this mainland extinction (灭绝)was increased activity from native Australians and dingoes (Australian wild dogs).
Scientists behind the University of Adelaide study, which was published in the Journal of Biogeography on Thursday, collected 51 new thylacine DNA samples from fossil (化石)bones and museum skins. The paper concluded that climate change starting about 4,000 years ago was likely the main cause of the mainland extinction.
The ancient DNA showed that the mainland extinction of thylacines was rapid, and not the result of loss of genetic diversity (基因多样性).There was also evidence of a population crash
(大跌)in thylacines in Tasmania at the same period of time, reducing their numbers and genetic diversity.
Professor Jeremy Austin said Tasmania would have been protected from mainland Australia's warmer, drier climate due to its higher rainfall. He argued that climate change was "the only thing that could have caused, or at least started, an extinction on the mainland and caused a population crash in Tasmania."
“They both occurred at about the same time, and the other two things that have been talked about in the past that may have driven thylacines to extinction on the mainland were dingoes and humans. So the only explanation that's left is climate change. And because that population crash happened at the same time that the species (物种)went extinct on the mainland, our argument is there's a common theme there and the only common theme is that there is this change in climate.”
24. What did scientists believe in the past according to the passage
A. Marsupials were all meat-eating animals.
B. Dingoes should be removed from Australia.
C. Thylacines had no enemies on mainland Australia.
D. Human activities may cause the extinction of thylacines.
25. What's the difference between mainland Australia and Tasmania
A. Tasmania has more dingoes.
B. Tasmania has more rainy days.
C. Tasmania has a higher temperature.
D. Tasmania has more native activities.
26. The reason why Jeremy Austin had strong argument is that
A. something similar occurred on mainland Australia and Tasmania
B. Tasmania were protected from mainland Australia's warmer climate
C. humans and dingoes may have driven thylacines to extinction
D. mainland Australia suffered from much higher rainfall in the past
27. What's the best title for the passage
A. The cause of disappearance of thylacines
B. The ways of protecting meat-eating animals
C. The result of warmer climate in Australia
D. The effect of climate change on wildlife

Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends—532, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Kaylee's online friendships could be making her lonely That's what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.
Could this be true During your parents' childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words With Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platforms(平台).
In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger, “There's definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other," says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. "If we are constantly checking in with our virtual words, we will have little time for our real-world friendships," says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today's kids might mistake the “friends" on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don't need someone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.
28.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To summarize the text.
B. To tell about true friends.
C. To bring up a discussion.
D. To encourage online friendship.
29.What does the underlined part "in the flesh" mean in Paragraph 3
A. In any case. B. In person.
C. In full measure. D. In advance.
30.What is Katie's attitude towards online communication
A. Worried. B. Unconcerned. C. Confused. D. Positive.
3l.What view does Rosen hold
A. It's wise to turn to friends online.
B. It's easier to develop friendships in reality.
C. Teenagers need focus on real-world friendships.
D. Social media help people stay closely connected.

书面表达【答案】
Study Online
With the outbreak of the COVID-19, a lot of students have to study online at home.
As for online studying, it has two sides. On the one hand, it not only can release teachers from repeating the same contents and students can replay the teaching materials as well. On the other hand, online teaching lacks teacher-student interactions and people doubt it students have self-discipline without supervision.
As far as I'm concerned, although online classes are a better option when it comes to the special situation at the moment, I prefer to study in class because what students acquire at school is more than knowledge.
