Thank you. It’s my great honor to be given this award.
You cannot imagine that I have always been a late starter. Years ago, when I was 16, I took an important exam—GCE(General Certificate of Education), which turned out to be a failure. My dad was reading my report card and saw that my position in class was 29th, but the number in class was 29. It meant that I had achieved the distinction of being bottom of my class.
I wasn’t lazy, and I was really trying. You can picture how I felt. Dad put his hand on my shoulder and said, “You can only do the best you can, but whatever you decide to do, make sure you love it.” He was a really sweet guy and a great man. I knew his attempt to hide his disappointment with some of his encouraging words. I was depressed for a week, but his advice was a wake-up call.
Fortunately I love working with my hands, and I was good at two things: woodwork and art, and I really loved to draw and paint. I was quite talented. Dad strongly encouraged me to go to art school, which in those days wasn’t the obvious place that a father would suggest.
So I got into Hartlepool College of Art. The college was a revelation(出乎意料), the passionate teachers there, who were extremely interested in the students, not just tolerating them but actually engaging with them. It was a world apart from my schooling until then. It’s extraordinary what an enthusiastic teacher can do, drawing the student out, lighting independence, and encouraging a design of your own future, rather than waiting for something to happen. I’m honored to have become one of these passionate teachers years later.
My teachers inspired me, and thanks to my dad, here I am tonight. I think I should mention all the talents I have worked with over time, and to my kids and my wife Giannina, thank you.
Thank you for this great award. I shall find a very special place for it.

After numerous warnings over the years, you thought coffee probably had a negative effect on your health Perhaps the drink is not so bad after all.
The new study, conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), has been published and suggests that coffee does not have a harmful effect on your health. Researchers suggest, based on data examined, older adults who drink a lot of coffee, have a lower risk of death when compared to their non-drinking coffee peers.
The team of researchers conducting the study analyzed data on 400,000 U.S. men and women, aged 50 to 71 years; the individuals had participated in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. This study started in 1995﹣1996 and was tracked until the day a participant passed away, or Dec. 31, 2008.
According to a press release on the report, researchers shared that coffee drinkers are “less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections, although the association was not seen for cancer.”
Results indicated participants that drank three or more cups of java a day reduced their risk of death by 10percent. Based on the findings that both caffeinated and non-caffeinated coffee found similar results, researchers are thinking caffeine is not the protective ingredient(原料), although which ingredient in coffee might be, they are not sure.
Researchers indicate that despite these observational findings, they caution it is not clear whether or not drinking coffee actually extends life expectancy.
“Coffee is one of the most widely consumed drinks in America, but the association between coffee consumption and risk of death has been unclear. We found coffee consumption to be associated with lower risk of death overall, and of death from a number of different causes,” said Neal Freedman, Ph. D. , Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, NCI.
“Although we cannot infer a relationship between coffee drinking and lower risk of death, we believe these results do provide some comfort that coffee drinking does not adversely affect health,” Freedman said.
Dr. Cheryl Williams, a registered dietician, told ABC News, “Overall, more research needs to be done to truly understand the compounds in coffee and their biological activity and effect on health,” said Williams.

If you analyze people’s actions, you will come to the conclusion that they all seek happiness. Every act is in fact a search for it, even if on the surface it doesn’t look so. Happiness is always the main target.
Going to the movies, eating in a restaurant and going to a party are all motivated by the desire to be happy. Who does not dream of a vacation in some fascinating locations, a new car, a new house, or the ideal match All people daydream, and some even try to make their dream a reality. And why is that In order to be happy!
Many people endanger themselves by climbing steep mountains, entering unexplored caves, or diving into the deep of the ocean in order to enjoy the few moments of happiness. A thief may steal because he loves the thrill of danger, or because he desires to have quick money to spend. He is actually looking for happiness, though in a perverted way.
Of course not all actions end in happiness. The motive is happiness, but the results do not always bring the desire. According to some spiritual traditions, we are spiritual beings in physical bodies. The spiritual part is always happy. Rather, it is happiness itself. But the physical body covers this happiness essence(本质). There is a constant desire to find out this happiness. This is the reason why happiness is constantly sought.
However, there is no need to search for happiness or to create it, or to have all kinds of outer experiences and actions in order to feel it. On the contrary, everything has to be dropped in order to experience it. Every technique, which helps to relax the mind and calm the rush of thoughts will lead to happiness.
41. From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that ________.
A. happiness is a daydream
B. it is very hard to analyze people’s actions
C. many things people do are to attain happiness
D. one should act carefully so as not to show his purpose
42. The underlined word “perverted” in Paragraph 3 most likely means ______.
A. illegal B. unfair C. cautious D. difficult
43. According to the author, why do people seek happiness all the time
A. All actions don’t result in the expected happiness.
B. There is little awareness of the nature of happiness.
C. One’s physical body is controlled by his spiritual part.
D. People are so greedy that it’s hard to satisfy their desires.
44. What is the author’s attitude towards seeking happiness
A. Objective. B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Disapproving.

I was only one year older than my sister Jeanne, but by the time we were old enough to drive, we had parted ways. When I was 19, I moved away from our Wisconsin home to Virginia. My father had a horse farm there and that's when I began to work as a veterinary assistant, helping him around the farm. Jeanne got married at 18, moved to Chicago and became-well, I didn’t know what.
Fast-forward about five years. I was 24 and went to New York City with my fiancé to see the sights. We saw Little Italy, the Statue of Liberty and Chinatown. I had never seen so many taxicabs in one spot in all my life. It was overwhelming. I was used to riding my horse to the corner store where everyone knew everyone in the quiet little town of Driver, Virginia.
During a day of sightseeing, we were crossing a very busy street. Everyone was in a hurry. I had laughed at something my fiancé said, and I suddenly heard my name yelled from somewhere behind me: “Cheryl!” I froze in my steps in the middle of the road. Tears welled up in my eyes. I knew without a doubt that it was my sister Jeanne. I yelled back before even turning to look. “Jeanne ” And there we were, standing in the middle of a Manhattan street, facing each other and smiling. I couldn’t believe it.
I later asked how she’d known it was me-she never saw me! She said it was my laugh. I wouldn’t say my laugh is all that unusual, but I guess to a family member it’s infectious. It hits your heart and resonates in your mind.
I asked her what she was doing in New York, and she said she had come for an opera show and was there for only a week. Both our visits were trips planned just a week earlier.
Since that time, my sister and I have never lost touch. We both moved back to Wisconsin. We talk daily. Many years have passed, and we are now in our 50s. But our meeting by chance wasn’t just a sign. I see it as more of a lesson, a reminder to stay connected with loved ones.

书面表达:(共20分)
A possible version:
Much of the world has enjoyed the prosperity brought by advanced science and technology as well as a healthy economy, but the world is also faced with environmental problems like global warming, pollution, species extinction and overpopulation.
Personally, I think the over- consumption of plastics is the most serious environmental problem in our life. Whether at markets or restaurants, plastic is frequently used in people’s daily life. We take our groceries home from the supermarkets in plastic bags. We put our waste in plastic bags. We drink from plastic cups and bottles. We use plastic to store our leftovers. Yet, a lot of these plastics are never recycled, which harms the environment. Animals and birds that swallow plastic could die as a result, and the plastics that end up in landfills pollute the earth’s soil and water.
Facing such a situation, I believe it’s everyone’s duty to be more environmentally aware and “Go Green”. As for me, I will reduce the use of plastics in my daily life. For example, I won’t use plastic straws. Also, I will ask my family and friends to use cloth shopping bags in the supermarket. I believe that with everyone's individual effort, these problems can be solved.

W: Hello, everyone! Just to give you an idea of the range of exhibitions we have here at the museum, I’m going to tell you about the exhibitions and activities for visitors of different ages. First of all, for kids, we have a fascinating area called Shapes and Patterns, where they can play with objects and see how they form different patterns. It’s really colourful and exciting. Kids love it. Then, we have more complex exhibitions that appeal more to our older visitors. There’s one about how planes developed over the years. Older visitors may even be able to remember some of the earlier planes on show. Another exhibition that adults might particularly enjoy is the energy exhibition. It shows the historical development of different forms of energy in Britain and how it has powered industry over the centuries. And, of course, we mustn’t forget the teenagers. There are lots of exhibitions to interest them, but my favourite is the one where visitors can find out more about how physics works. It’s a fun exhibition with plenty of hands-on activities, which explore how light and heat and chemicals work. It’s great.
